"History is a lie that has been honed like a weapon by people who have suppressed the truth. Centuries from now, your own history will also be suppressed."

Stalin isn't the prime example for sane people. And why would those 'sane people' have a prob just cuz someone else holds other beliefs? Isn't that exactly what we blame religion for in various cases? And if you like religion or not, lots of people buy into it. So you need to resort to repressive policies against quite a big part of the population in most countries. How's that a society worth living in?Originally posted by Agathon

I agree with Aggie, as long as communism is counted as a religion.

Yes, the things people believe in are, in fact, stupid.

Actually it's motivated by anti-authoritarianism. Religion is one of the key ways in which authoritarians flourish in our society. Replacing religion with atheism as the established authority is a way of getting them on side and also a way of moderating their baleful influence. After all, if an authoritarian believes that he must find empirical evidence to justify his political program it is a hell of a lot better than if he believes it is justified because a burning tree or a pillar of salt talked to him.Originally posted by Arrian

Or would you prefer that we simply put all the authoritarians to death? That could be arranged.

It doesn't. Kuci is just that spoiled little boy in the corner with the high pitched voice who feels the need to pipe up with complete nonsense at random intervals. He's as good an argument for class conditioning as I've ever seen.Originally posted by Victor Galis

Actually, given the fiasco in Iraq, I suspect it couldn't be. Even if you could, I suspect in some places they'd spring right back up.Originally posted by Agathon

Also, on a somewhat unrelated note: I spent much time today reading a serious article about pirate governance in the 17-18 centuries (Yes, this was a real article in the Journal of Political Economy). Interestingly enough, pirate ships were were significantly more democratic than merchant ships (and certainly than naval officers). Hardly seems democracy makes the pirates nice fellows though.
The article suggests the pirates were democratic because they did not face the principal-agent problem that merchants faced (absentee owners having no ability to watch over their ships while they were at sea).

Try the poll then. Give the same explanation you gave me about how circles must contain circularity from another dimension, and see how many people think it makes sense.Originally posted by Agathon

Given that you've demonstrated you aren't interested in argument, thinking or learning anything, but would rather behave like a ****, I don't see the point.Originally posted by Elok
