Lord of the One Ring graphic tweaks

All credit to the actual art goes to Fairline and the other creators, I simply tweaked and recolored.

The units done here: Eomer, Rohan Lancer, Theoden.

I'm not happy about Theoden's hair color. White is like black in that you have to carefully craft a subtle combination to get the right effect, and I think the back of his head is too (dark) gray.

I've a question, related to this. When one has "designed" a unit by taking pieces from various works...say the body of from a Fairline unit, the head from a Favored Flight unit, and the shield from still another creator...what is the proper way to give credit? Its not original work in the sense you drew it, though putting it together counts for something.

It doesn't seem this is a big issue for most of the community, given that sharing one's creations is done generously by those with the talent (or who wish they had the talent like me), but I would like to know how to express my thanks for those who actually did the hard work of drawing in cases like these.

"My thanks to the Civilization II community at Apolyton" is certainly accurate, if all else fails.

If you are doing a scenario, a mention in the Readme of all the artists who contributed full units or just "body parts" is a classy thing to do.

If you are using a unit with the original artist's signature or logo, in an intact state or with minor modification, then you should keep the sig on the unit.

If there are substantial changes, leave the original sig off, since it is no longer the unaltered work of the original artist.

If you make your own modifications to someone else's work, you may add your own sig to that of the original artist. No unit should have more than 2 sigs - it gets a bit ridiculous after that.

If you use someone else's outline of a figure and fill it in with all new uniforms and weapons, it's a new unit. Put your own sig on it with pride.

Art work which modifies Civ and is posted on Poly or other civ sites is public domain, which means you can use it freely and without permission. Giving credit to others when you use their work is just common courtesy, and is the expectation of the community.

Alright, I think most of these "patchart" are "my work" by your definitions, but for purposes of good taste and common decency (courtesy), "all the artists here".

Its basically taking bits from various units, some by the same artist, some not, and tweaking them into a new unit, for the most part. Sigs thusly seem misplaced.

Regarding mine...I don't use one, so I'm not interested in credit besides personal thanks if anyone borrows my tweaks. As stated, the actual art is almost entirely "other".

    Thanks for answering.

Looking through the forum's past posts and found some lovely units here. They're also apparently in the Pre-Steam Units thread.

So the question is...are they available in the sense most of the units posted here are, or not? It seems that if an artist (like Fairline did with a few of the units here, for which the art borrower in me must confess to disappoitnment on) specifically asks for them to be left alone and not borrowed/reused, that's the case...or to put it another way, if not specifically requested, they're free.

By free, I mean "the artist won't mind". I don't see Leonidas around to ask personally, but this also applies to anyone else posting unit art suggestions (used or not) in scenario threads.

Yhey're usually unavailable until the scenario (which they've been reserved for) is released. Asking the author is often the best thing. However, I don't think most of them mind, since they already posted them here.

The general rule of thumb is everything posted here is up for grabs unless the poster specifically asks for stuff to be reserved pending release of a scenario. There's stuff at Catfish's site which is reserved for his own LOTR scenario for example, but feel free to use or modify anything I've posted.

Thanks, both of you. As someone who has moderately good cut-and-paste-to-create-a-unit ability, but who can't actually -draw-worth past basic art (something just beyond what you see in game as is), finding good art that I can either use as is or play with to get a desired effect is very enjoyable.

Its also enjoyable to see the wonderful work of those who can produce great stuff, just because it looks so pretty. There's a certain something to managing to create the right effects for a white surcoat or a black cloak that when done right is absolutely beautiful.

Why the Civ game designers didn't develop anything nearly this good (maaaybe a couple exceptions in some of the scenarios) is a mystery to me. Maybe just a lack of time/budget.

Anyway, will continue posting my attempts if anyone is interested. Seems so, but just wanting to check in, as this thread has (like most, though) vastly more views than responses, and I can't read minds.
