    Steelers sign QB Byron Leftwich

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran quarterback Byron Leftwich on Sunday, choosing the former Jacksonville Jaguars starter over Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowl player.

The Steelers signed the 28-year-old Leftwich after both he and Culpepper worked out Sunday morning at the team's training camp at Saint Vincent College.

Pittsburgh needed a backup for Ben Roethlisberger after veteran Charlie Batch broke his right collarbone in Friday night's 16-10 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Batch, who is scheduled for surgery Monday, is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Leftwich, who has started 46 career games for Jacksonville and Atlanta, may not be released when Batch returns.

"We're just going to let the play talk," Tomlin said. "You know how we do it. We're going to evaluate what we see based on performance."

Leftwich was released by Atlanta in February and has played in just nine games the past two seasons because of ankle injuries. A first-round pick of Jacksonville in 2003, he saw action in 15 games that season, making 13 starts. He missed two games in 2004 and five in 2005 with injuries.

A serious ankle injury in 2006 limited him to just six games, opening the door for backup David Garrard to get a 10-game audition and win the starting job. Leftwich was released at the end of training camp last year and signed with Atlanta.

The Steelers also signed veteran punter Mitch Berger on Sunday to compete with Paul Ernster. Punter Daniel Sepulveda, a fourth-round draft pick in 2007, tore an anterior cruciate ligament on the first day of practice, ending his season.

The 35-year-old Berger is a 12-year veteran with a career average of 43.1 yards with five different teams, including Arizona in 2007.

The Steelers also activated Pro Bowl nose tackle Casey Hampton from the physically unable to perform list, where he had been since failing his conditioning test July 27. To make room for Leftwich and Berger on the roster, the team waived wide receiver Gerran Walker and linebacker Anthony Trucks.

Willis McGahee might miss the start of the season:

    http://www.carrollcountytimes.com/ar...ews/ravens.txt

Baltimore Ravens star running back Willis McGahee is scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee as soon as today in South Florida.

McGahee’s knee has been bothering him since shortly after reporting to training camp in Westminster and he hasn’t been practicing lately. This is regarded as a clean-up medical procedure.

Because it generally takes two weeks to a month to recover from a knee scope, McGahee could possibly return for the Sept. 7 season-opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hey, have you Bears fans read Peter King's MMQB today? On page 2 towards the bottom is his Peter Tom Willis Memorial Stat of the Week, showcasing Bears starting QBs in the Favre-at-GB era.

That's been done a million times. Trust me, we're well aware of the situation.

However, there was a great phone call from one of the brothers on local sports radio this morning. The guy say: "Gentlemen, everyone knows that tragic deaths come in threes. So a moment of silence, please, for Isaac Hayes, Bernie Mac, and the 2008 Bears season."

    Priceless.

Bobby Engram is going to be out for up to two months:

    http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/footba...eahawks11.html

The Seahawks' injury situation has gone from aggravating to roster altering, because leading receiver Bobby Engram will miss six to eight weeks with a cracked
bone in his shoulder and the contract of defensive tackle Marcus Tubbs was terminated after he failing yet another physical because of his troublesome right knee.

Rumors have it that the Boss will play at the next Super Bowl's half-time show:

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/08112008...owl_123968.htm

THE next Super Bowl is really going to rock. This year, Tom Petty rocked the halftime crowd at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. But Super Bowl XLIII on Feb. 1 in Tampa will feature Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, sources said.

Source: Pats, Lynch agree to one-year deal worth $1.5 million

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- One day after visiting New England, former Denver Broncos safety John Lynch has reached a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Patriots, according to a source.

Lynch, 36, was released by the Broncos, who wanted to re-adjust his role this season. After talking to coach Mike Shanahan, the Broncos gave him a chance to land elsewhere. The Patriots were the perfect fit.

Belichick became interested in Lynch after losing safety Tank Williams for the season because of a knee injury. Williams was expected to be used 10-to-25 plays a game in certain defensive packages that needed a hard-hitting safety.

"I still have a great passion for the game of football," Lynch said after being released by the Broncos. "I still very much love it in my heart. I still feel like I can compete at a Pro Bowl level, but the situation is going to have to be right. I'm not going to just play for any team or any situation."

Lynch, who spent his first 11 seasons with Tampa Bay, played every snap in Denver's last three games last season, but earlier he was taken out on passing downs.

In Kyle they trust. Rex Grossman takes a seat on the bench in Chicago.

I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

Well, think of it this way. Every game Grosston starts is another week closer to drafting Stafford, Painter, or Tebow...
