btw, I went to go see the Caps blow out the Bruins 10-2 on Monday.

Ovechkin had a hat trick in the first period.

Yeah, that Nystrom vid is amazing. TSN was airing a side-by-side comparison with the Slapshot video, and it's dead on.

This is a cool stat: rebounds (and subsequent goals) against per team (season to date):

    http://forechecker.blogspot.com/2008...ng-crease.html

Calgary leads the league with 77 rebounds (tie with SJ). Vancouver has 83. Montreal 111. Ottawa 119. Toronto 120. Edmonton 124.

What's even more interesting is how many goals were scored off rebounds. Chicago leads that stat, 17 goals allowed off 96 rebounds (middle of the road there). I wonder why that is?

The Canucks continue to build momentum: 4 straight losses, and now Ohlund is potentially out for the season with "bone chips in his left knee".

    Erik Ersberg

He may be LA's sixth goalie this season, but he may be a keeper after shutting out Ottawa with 40 saves.

I'm not surprised about Montreal's bad number. Huet gave a lot of rebounds.

Price gives good rebounds. He seems to only give up goals on first shots, which is a mixed blessing.

Indeed Montreal's rebound-scored percentage is also decent, 31/111 or around 27.9%. That's slighly under Calgary's percentage, for example, 22/77 or 28.6%. So, Price/Huet give up significantly more rebounds, but are about equally good at stopping them to Kipper, for example.

I wonder if it's an element of goaltending style, also (Butterfly vs whatever the other one is? or something else?). You'll notice there is a cluster of teams aroun Montreal with 'good' goaltenders, but lots of rebound-shots, but a good goals-allowed-per-rebound percentage:
    New Jersey (103/26)
    Anaheim (104/21!)
    Buffalo (107/24)
    Montreal (111/31)
    Carolina (113/32)
    Philly (114/30)
    Atlanta (117/33)
    Pittsburgh (124/30)
    Edmonton (124/33)
amongst a bunch of teams with much worse percentages of 30%+ (Toronto 120/41, Kings 144/50, Panthers 147/40, Ottowa 119/39, etc.)

Do some goalies play a style that involves giving up more rebounds, but are still good enough that they end up catching more rebounds? Or, are some goalies so good that they get to pucks that other goalies normally wouldn't get to, but as it's a very tough reach they end up giving a rebound as a result?

Yes, the style of play has a big effect. The goalies that came from the San Jose School of Goalies (tm) coached by Warren Strelow (Kiprusoff, Nabokov, Toskala -- he also coached Brodeur in his formative NHL years) tend to have outstanding rebound control. Instead of old-school **** like stacking-the-pads, or lots of blocker saves, etc they're far more likely to be positionally very sound and glove the save down.

Yet Brodeur gave up quite a few rebounds (well, about halfway up the list, but a lot for a 'top' goalie)... is he just getting old and/or has a crappy defense?

The beginning of the season he wasn't that good at all. That makes a big difference.

Oh well. Glad to hear the bearer of bad tidings congratulating the Canucks for pasting Nashville 6-2.

Everyone knows Tootoo is a goon, why bother discussing it?

And congratulations to the Canucks to beating Chris 'Brodeur" Mason and Dan "Luongo" Ellis...

    How do you figure?

If the Canucks had lost, Chicago would only have to pass Vancouver instead of Nashville.

Ah, you have to pass us both.

Funny, the Canucks are in 9th and 3 points out of 3rd, so it's crazy right now in our division.

    place: team, points(games left)

    7th place now: Colorado, 78 (14)
    8th place now: Vancouver, 76 (15)
    9th place now: Nashville, 76 (14)
    ..
    11th place now: Chicago, 72 (15)

    In the Nashville-winning altiverse:
    7th place: Colorado, 78 (15)
    8th place: Nashville, 78 (15)
    9th place: Vancouver, 74 (16)
    ..
    11th place: Chicago, 72 (16)

I got the 7th place part wrong, that's 6 points either way. I was confused.

The difference I suppose is that 2 games is easier to pick up than 3, even if it's against two teams. It's slightly harder to pick up against a team with one more game to play of course, but i'll still take 4 points to 6 any day. I look to Chicago winning, not to other teams losing

    Generally

If chasing two teams that play each other (and you need to pass them both)-- you want the points leader of the two to lose

If you needed to only catch one, then obviously you would hope for the points leader of the two to win .

You just want to stay within as few points as possible to the team you need to catch

Its the same for teams being chased really-- All the teams looking back are happy to see Edmonton knock off Columbus tonight for instance ( but curse them for doing it in OT)

and Vancouver/Colorado etc would probably rather Calgary beat Nashville tonight so the points would be 81 and 76 rather than have them at 79 and 78-- They are a little more secure in a playoff spot with Nashville losing

    I'd rather Calgary lost.

These are my reasons. Vancouver has an easier time to catch Calgary then they have to catch Nashville. The target isn't Nashville, but one of the other teams in their own division, Colorado, Minnesota or Calgary.

Of the 8 spots, it is likely that 2 will be central teams, 2 pacific and 2 northwest, just because most of the games remaining are against interdivisional foes, and because there are no large gaps between the teams.

That leaves 2 spots still for playoff teams. As Nashville is the second team in the Central, that means the real rivals are Anaheim, Vancouver, Calgary, Minnesota and Colorado. Five teams fighting for 4 spots, one of which must be in the North west division. If Anaheim makes it, that means the four teams, Vancouver, Calgary, Minnesota and Colorado are fighting for three spots, third, 6th and 7th.

    Dang, the second worst outcome

    At least Calgary lost.

    Kept pace with Minnie though.

But even if the Flames had won, I would still be concerned about how their offence continues to look rather pathetic lately. In the last two games in particular they simply did not generate enough chances
