I go for Alphabet myself. It lets me trade techs long before the others can, which usually gives me a pretty good tech lead. Of course I never let them have Aphabet, at least not until a few others have it as well.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.
