The Pre-Bronze age history of France

Cave paintings found in the caves of the Parisian Hills

The Neolithic tribes that lived in the lands of modern France had quickly abandoned hunting and fishing in favor of agriculture once they had learned how to harvest crops. The lush forest of the Parisian region was not cleared for some time, since at first population growth was slow despite the adoption of agriculture. Not only this, but clearing forests was hard with stone tools, this may have encouraged the tribes to domesticate animals as a supplement. In earlier times they had hunted the plentiful cattle and sheep of the clearings it is not hard to imagine domestication taking place. Some early mining efforts can be found in the Easter hills, these “mines” most likely date to the relatively short Copper Age. The end of this period had seen establishment of several small permanent communities (Paris I) on the site of modern Paris.

A reconstruction of a FranCeltic village

The Copper age culture (3200-2300BC) seems to have had contact with some of the inhabitants of other more distant lands, some evidence of an early Mongolian and Dutch contact exists. The tribes were not unified at this time and little can be said of their culture. The culture of the conglomerate pseudo-city of Paris I was definitely Celtic in nature, the political arangement was most likley some kind tribal alliance under a cheiftan, simlar to the later "King of the Clans" arrangement. The culture of the population in surrounding forests is not known.

What is know that the Fran-Cletic tribes, mingled with two major separate groups. One called the Aquileian by modern historians the other one called Germanic. The Aquilenas had a profound cultural influence; they had vague linguistic, but not cultural similarities, to the Carpathians of the time. Their language replaced the Celtic language very quickly. This coincides with the settlement of Pairs II, so some conquest may have taken place in this period. The second group arrived just before the Bronze age, their language seems to be related closely to the Dutch and American language, they lost their cultural identity quickly however. The lingual mix that remained would become French and the clannish structure even though it had survived would slowly wither, signaling the diminishing importance of Celtic heritage in French cultural identity.

A Clan noble, with his companions while on a mission of trade and exploration.

The third millenium BC, is sometimes called the first age of exploration, for many clansmen with warriors entourages traveled beyond the river Loire, to the far West. This was possible because the local were either not developed enough or did not mind explorers passing in the nearly empty lands they claimed. The Mongols did mind, the French respected these wishes, since the open plains were no place for lone warriors used to the forests and hills of Parisia. They sought adventure, profit, recoginiton as great warrior or were
even sent by the leader of the allaince of clans on a "quest" of exploration.

Contact was made with the "Arabs" of the land of the rivers. It's not clear why the early French visitors to those lands thought of the early Ottomans as Arabs. They probably linked them to the legendary enemies of the lost Western Aquileans or the Western Romanic Empire. Some obscure references to Ottoman legends about a people called "the Bysant" do exist, and they seem culturally similar to the ancient Aquileans, but French sources do not elaborate on this. The Western Aquileans and the lost Continent of Greekantis probably both belong to the realm of myth. The Arabs if they ever existed were probably a dead or dying culture by 3000BC. It is possible they had become a minor desert tribe, after perhaps migrating further west.

The French were not alone in their undertakings, evidence exists of several Rus parties exploring French lands. First contact was friendly, but after a time the Clan leaders grew suspicious of soo many “explorers” and requested their number in their lands be reduced to one group of Scouts. Despite this they provided the Rus with supplies and food, a few men including two Celtic speaking druids (one of the few mentions of them in French history) apparently joined the first group of Rus explorers, impressed by what they saw as piety to the Ozzy. The Rus reportedly also commented on the hospitality of the French and told tales of their land that lay "far far to the West" where another ocean was to be seen by their claims.

Chief Soumaoro of the Kaniaga clan-Mali-beseeches the forgiveness of all the nations of Terra for this terrible breach of etiquette. It was not done as a means of obtaining information, but was merely the result of a rather desperate attempt to get a screenshot that I could include in the post. I did not save the resulting file, & learned nothing of any importance from doing so. Now that I know of this rule (none had informed us of this previously) be assured that it will never, NEVER happen again. Those responsible for the breach have been dealt with in a suitably brutal fashion-if that helps.

Also, in future, I shall refrain from showing in-game screenshots, for the reason that the Mongolian Empire just highlighted. Consider this one just punishment for the Malinese breach, as now people are aware of my current plans. Again, apologies for the error. The Malinese people shall not make this mistake again.

            The Oracle

One of the most ancient and well preserved wonders of Carpathia is the Oracle at Târgoviste.

Dating back to 2000 BC, many experts speculate that it was this Oracle that united the various tribes of the Carpathian forests. These ruins now serve as one of several modern day holy sites for the religion of Islam.

The Oracle also serves as the medium for the first written laws known to man. Inscribed in the stone of the Oracle is Tepes's Laws. These laws also appear in the Islamic holy book "The Code".

            The Code

"The Code" was written by Vlad Tepes sometime between 2200 BC and 2150 BC. Serving as a basis on which to live ones life, "The Code" is revered by scholars as the most progressive writing of it's time.

Tepes's Laws contained in The Code addressed many of the social ills plaguing ancient man. One of the main themes of "The Code" is that by inflicting excruciating pain upon criminals in public, the overall suffering of society is reduced because there are almost no criminals or victims. For those who do break the laws, punishment is swift and certain.

            The Carpathian Rathaus

Crime and disorder was delt with through the institution of the Carpathian Rathaus. Rathauses (translated means "justice house") served as the police, judge, jury, and executioner in Carpathian cities.

Tepes stresses in The Code that any sort of violation against ones fellow man is inexcusable, and reduces that man to a lowly animal. In following the tradition of the Carpathian hunting pits, criminals are impaled like wild game. With skill, the “impailer” could keep the “impailee” alive for two or three days in the form of a wide eyed and moaning human shish kabob.

Public impalements quickly became a hallmark of Islamic religion, as well as other methods of tourcher conducted at the Rathauses. The means achieved the ends however, as crime was non-existent in early Carpathia.

            Tepes's Cup

The grail of Islamic religion is known as Tepes's Cup. This golden cup sat in the middle of Târgoviste Square unguarded for over 4000 years until the Carpathian Union decided to take the cup into a protected museum environment. Never was it stolen, although a few attempts were made. Those foolish enough to try were subjected to anal impalement with an oiled blunt stake after being skinned alive, a special punishment reserved for this crime in particular.

The cup was worth many times its weight in gold, as it stood as living proof for 4000 years that Tepes’s Code worked to virtually eliminate crime. This, coupled with the use of Rathaus style justice allowed the Carpathians to expand their empire rapidly between 2000 BC – 500 AD with little concern for corruption or revolution.

The Reigh of Samuel the Yankee...

Samuel the Yankee was chosen by an assembled group of Yankee elders known as the 'College of Electors' to rule over the tribes for the remainder of his life; being relatively young at the time he reigned for a long time and was generally known as a successful King upon his death around 2100 b.c. His reign saw the beginings of the modern American nation, the recognition of a 'federated' kingdom of the verious clans within the Yankee tribe, and probably most important the begining of American diplomacy. According to legend their land was promised to them by their ancient goddess Britannia, so the protection and security of American lands was of not only defensive importance but also religious importance as well as a matter of pride and respect. This quickly came towards disagreements with neighboring peoples, primarily the Carpathians who met the ancient Americans with a degree of hostility that the Americans took very much to heart...

              Richmond, Virginia, 2470 b.c. ....

Since his rise to power Samuel has ruled his people with a degree of benevolence and a (relatively) liberal attitude that helped to solidify the Yankee people, despite their local differences and customs. True the language was the same, and they all considered themsleves part of the same nation of people, but the differences between Yankee clans mere miles from one another was enough to stimulate arguments; Samuel knew this, and knew further that they were not alone in this area. Already American warriors had come accross different peoples who no doubt lived close by (the surrounding jungles themselves sometimes took decades to traverse) and the Americans feared that another mighty empire may again return to oppress them. This was Samuel's foremost concern; the safety and autonomy of his people.

"Can we be sure of the severity of their reaction?" John asked; the hut was particularly cold, but there was plenty of food. Samuel had come to call upon most of the people present at the original College of Electors as an advisory board, or Senate, to give him the guideance and information he needed to rule his people, "Communication with these people is difficult, we don't know precisely how to speak their language, and I find it difficult they could consider that settlement to be an aggressive move." He continued after nobody answered his first question.

"I agree with you John" High Chief Samuel the Yankee said, he was getting much older, and the toll it took showed in some of these meetings "I don't think their reaction was properly understood by our representatives, they were warriors after all. They aren't exactly trained to understand other cultures, in fact they are trained to destroy them."

"Well, then we should follow up with an official meeting, with their leadership" John responded, John Jefferson was the closest friend and most trusted advisor of Samuel the Yankee, while Samuel considered John as a son (for he had none), John had seen Samuel as more of a stepping stone to more political authority, he had his own vision of an American future, but that was not the issue at hand "Clearly we can make some sort of agreement, it is one settlement."

The men were discussing recent issues between the Carpathians and Americans. A few hundred years prior the Carpathians asked that no new settlements go north of Richmond, while the Americans did not agree to these original terms, the Carpathians considered the statement as a warning. Yankee settlers quickly entered the area, however, and established the settlement of New York (ironically named after the evil and mythological York) much to the chagrin of the Carpathian elite. The tone the Carpathians elected to use when discussing the matter alarmed the Americans, and this meeting was the result; "I say, we can't continue to duck from these types of insults!" Benedict Arnold cried, he was a major trader of fleece and lamb, and wanted to extend this business north on the river Potomac, and he saw New York as a settlement for this as it was located at a river junction "The Carpathians speak to us like dogs! How can we accept that? I say we let our axes do the talking for us!"

"Benedict, please, rousing the chamber into an uproar will not help, besides everybody knows you have other motives" Samuel said, he stood up, slowly "We must realize, the Carpathians must realize, that we are both in this together. According to our scouts we are the only two here in the north, to the south lay the dark tribes and the black men of Mali, beyond the great jungle. We have to make it perfectly clear that we must be friends, for the perpetuity of our races, and for our shared might."

"Here here!" said John Jefferson, "I agree with the High Chief, we must not sharpen our blades just yet Arnold! I offer my services to speak with the Carpathians myself."

"But we already have an agreement" Benedict offered "We settle no further to the west, and they will settle no further to the east, I believe that is sufficient enough for the moment. Remember, we chose you Samuel to prevent foreign influence from ruining our federation, to protect powerful influence from taking control, you must follow the wishes of the Yankee people!"

"I know what my responsibilities are Benedict, you and John shall take a small retinue with you to Carpathia and offer talks with their leadership. Our goals are simple; we want an agreement that we can both be proud of, something that will bring our peoples together, we want something fair, and we want to consolidate our shared interests in this area. We must secure these lands for both America and Carpathia. They must understand we are willing to work with them to both of our benefit." Samuel said, he stopped and started at the wall "You know, I am growing quite old..."

"You are as strong as ever!" Benedict said.

"Please, please, spare me Benedict. I understand that very soon I will join my ancestors in the afterlife, a new leader must be chosen as I am without heir" the room grew quite "the coming days are mysterious, it is going to be difficult to tell what to expect in the new tomorrow. But I just want to say a few things, because I know the men in this room will be making the decisions here. Benedict and John, you will travel to Carpathia, and you will conform to their lifestyle, and live among them for a few years to gain their trust. I will probably be gone from this world when you return, I wish you luck, you represent all of the Yankee people, and the promised land of America, so please do so with respect. We must establish a proper defensible border for America, that should be our primary goal in the coming decades." Samuel smiled, it was strange, and almost out of place "I just wanted you to know how proud I am of all of you, I know what has happened hasn't been the best, and I know at times it has tested everyone's patience, but I can see the lands of America becoming mighty and honorable, and it rests on all of our shoulders. I uh, well, I don't remember what I was going to say, I'd better go home, its getting quite late for me."

John Jefferson stood up "High Chief, I'll escort you to your home. We have things to discuss, I don't know much about Carpathians..."

                  Reply to the Americans

Send your dignitaries. We are eager to know why the Americans would settle so close to Carpathian lands dispite our verbal claim to those lands. Our explorers tell us you have land to your south, east and west, yet you decide to expand directly toward us while we have the sea to our back.

To interperate this as anything but an insult to the Carpathians would be illogical.

Sulamein the first in the early days wandered with his newly wed wife onto the great flood plains at the base of the Great Rivers. It was a region unsettled due to regular floods which inundated the desert plains, but he saw its potential to feed a multitude if the rivers were properly tamed. He set up his residence between the 2 great rivers and with experimentation learnt how to tame the nearby wild cows so he was not fully dependent on the flood plains which he also worked with his innate knowledge.
Throwing together the skins of cows he soon learnt how to build a basic boat and harvest the offshore fish, adding to the health of his family. Finding that he had large surpluses of food, he quickly married additional women and set them up in separate cottages along the river banks. With an active night life, his children multiplied fast, kept healthy with the variety of food sources present.
Some children were sent out to explore the world and soon eight other groups of peoples were discovered building cities, some with unusual customs. But none had the food sources present in such quantity as Sulameins people who had settled in the city of Istanbul and spread along the coast to form another city with a source of tasty clams and more cows.
As time went on and Istanbul grew quickly, angry people were found within the city, lazing about and doing nothing. In his normal forthright manner and realising he needed more cities to protect the borders of the Great Rivers from the sea to its source in the mountains, a large number were uprooted and forced to dwell at the rivers source. Many perished in the process, but the borders became more secure from some animal drawn vehicles originating from over the mountains and some strange warrior types who called themselves 'kecka' or some similar term, their language being difficult to understand.
We have maintained good relations with these neighbours, and will do so with all who do not intrude into our Great Rivers and its plains and hills. A system of recording speech has been devised and will be used shortly to formalize these good relations and increase our learning. A reliable method of sending messages in a lasting format not dependent on memory is being devised, so these agreements can be worked on.
In the meantime we respectfully ask that the peoples from Mongolia, Inca and Holland in particular do respect all the Land of the Great Rivers, from the flood prone desert plains to its source in the mountains, roads may need repairing occasionally, but its abundance of food, and our people, their multiple wives who are set up in self funding cottages and many children do require all this region for their future habitation.

In-game screenshots are typically a really good idea and add to the richness of the story threads. But don't just post the whole screen. Use photoshop or MS paint or something to cut it down so you only show what you want to show.

You can also hit alt + I to remove the interface and take a clean screen shot.

Other ideas I've used in the past are to save the game at points you'd like to use in the thread and go back later to take screen shots and really frame the scene appropriately. No one cares if you advance the turn if it was 50 turns ago. You can also do great things with flying camera mode.

Some cool flying camera screenshots/posts by me in HOTWV:

The Battle of Delhi, (one amazing battle in an amazingly executed war against CS in HOTWV), I saved it and after the session recreated the battle to get some good action shots. I got a great screenshot of my troops being victorious in battle:

This one is cool just because you can so clearly see the battles:

And one final comment. I can't speak for everyone else, but the Great War in HOTWV was, without a doubt, the most epic and most enjoyable diplogame war I've ever been in. It was a 5 vs. 2 war, and the 2 won not through size or strength but through brilliant diplomacy and tactical maneuvers. The battle of Boston, the battle of Delhi and the battle of Madras.. man what great times.

Sorry for my threadjack, heh. HOTWV was awesome.

The Mali Chronicles Pt 2. The Rise of Kaniaga

With the Malinese people settled into a peaceful, agrarian existence, Chief Mansa Musa decided it was necessary to investigate the lay of the land. He called together a band of his strongest warriors & charged them with a sacred mission.

"Men, after just a few short years in this new land, many of our people are falling to a strange malaise emanating from the Niger & Ghana rivers. This malaise is being exacerbated by overcrowding near the banks of the rivers. Therefore, it is vitally important that you go out & investigate our surroundings, so that we may find other areas in which to live."

So this brave band of warriors crossed the Ghana river & headed out into the world. The first thing they discovered was a small, primitive village filled with people of the same skin complexion as the Mali. The villagers greeted them enthusiastically &-after some initial language difficulties-it was discovered that they wished to join the warriors in their journeys across the land. The leader, Kaniaga, told the leader of the warriors that his people knew this land well, & could help explore it much quicker than the newly arrived Mali.

The warriors agreed & the villagers packed up their camp & started to make their trek across the lands. The first thing that Kaniaga & his scout group found was a high mountain peak, atop which he could just barely discern some kind of settlement. "Shaman," said Kaniaga "remember this spot so that we may tell the Mali of it upon our return. One can only wonder what amazing feats the people of that settlement are capable of."

Later on, Kaniaga's group met with another friendly tribe, who taught them the trick to surviving in the jungles & hills which dominated this region. He thanked the villagers for the training, then pressed on.

Later in their trek, Kaniaga came across a group who-like them-were explorers but who-unlike them-had extremely pale skin. He warned this group-who called themselves Russian-not to build settlements beyond the Snowy Mountains to the East-though he wasn't sure if he communicated it properly.

Kaniaga & his clan journeyed far & wide, & battled many dangers common to the natural world. Kaniaga himself earned the title "Bear-Slayer" when he single-handedly slew two 8' tall cave bears. He also slew many other beasts, both small & great, for food & to survive their attacks. During this long trek Kaniaga also encountered other peoples of diverse appearance. The Pale-skin followers of Samuel & the Yellow-skin people of Inca, as well as the similarly dark-skinned Turks-with whom Kaniaga predicted a strong friendship could be forged.

It was of Kaniaga's return journey to Timbuktu that the strangest tales are told. It is said that he & his band of scouts sought a short-cut through the deadly southern deserts &-when word reached the Mali of this decision-the Chief mourned the group as though already dead.

Then, unlooked for, Kaniaga & his now depleted band arrived at the borders of Malinese territory, full of strange stories.

Kaniaga "Bear Slayer" spoke of how, after 2 months in the desert with no water, no fire & little food, they had all but given up hope of getting back. Then, to their amazement, they found a vast & beautiful oasis. Better still, to the East of the Oasis was a vast stand of admittedly stunted trees which could be burned as firewood.

It was during their night's encampment that strange things occurred. Kaniaga said "as we sat their by the fire, a host of spirit beings approached us. They called themselves Vodun & offered to give us great visions in return for us allowing them to ride in our bodies for a short time. The greatest of these spirits, Legba & Samedi, both rode me & gave me visions of a great pantheon of deities that control the natural world." He paused for a moment, then continued "they also told us how we should mine the yellow hills in order to obtain great wealth."

The Mali are a spiritual people, so they heeded Kaniaga's words as being divinely inspired-if not from Deities as he claimed, then certainly the spirits of their ancestors. Therefore he was allowed to take a team into the yellow hills & mine it deep. Soon, all of Timbuktu was awash with gold, & this gold was traded as a rudimentary form of currency both internally & with Mali's neighbours.

This wealth allowed Timbuktu to become fabulously wealthy, wealth that they redirected into gaining a better understanding of the world around them. Their search for gold led the Malinese people to unearth metals such as tin & copper, which they learned to fuse into a single metal-both tough yet flexible. This discovery, in turn, allowed them to build better better weapons for hunting & defense. So, in a very short space of time, Kaniaga's assistance had brought the Mali from a stone-age culture to the very height of the Bronze age. At which point he was prepared to reveal the last of his visions from Legba & Samedi. "Hear me people," said Kaniaga "for the Vodun told me that the time for old leadership had passed & that it was time for the chiefdom to pass to new blood. They said that I should be your new leader." Again, as a spiritual people, & with the strength of prior evidence, the Malinese people accepted his claim &-being old himself-Mansa Musa chose not to challenge the claim. Thus, with great fanfare, the reign of Chief Mansa Musa came to an end & the reign of Chief Soumaoro of the Kaniaga clan began.

I edited my post to provide some cool examples for you.

Also, it is highly recommended to limit the width of all pictures you post so they don't "break the thread" by extending further than the standard width of a screen. It messes things up.

HOTW V was indeed one of the best, if not THE best, Diplogames there have been.

And the Great War did dictate nearly a thousand years of politics in a way that really isn't normally seen in diplogames. I remember how almost every nation on Terra was involved in some way.

The war was 2 on 5, but the side with two did have behind the scenes allies, or at least supporters in China and Spain. The Great war pretty much split Terra into two "spheres," and almost three really if you consider the Anglo-Inca allies separate from the "Jewish States" of the south.

                              Ah memories...

High Chief Samuel the Yankee of the Federation of Yankee States of America.

                                Hail Vlad Tepes of Carpathia!

                                While we understand your concern, on behalf of High Chief Samuel the Yankee I shall explain the position of America;

Firstly, the settlement made at the river junction, which has been called New York by its inhabitants, was not made with belligerence or ill-will towards our Carpathian brothers. This is something High Chief Samuel has insisted upon, and despite this Carpathia continues to consider this a lie. The city was simply placed along the river which flows from the mountain ranges near Richmond, our capital, and is not particularly far from our capital either. To suggest this settlement was made in order to intimidate or send any message of any type to Carpathia is simply a mistake, for these are not the circumstances of New York's establishment.

Secondly; Carpathia made no attempt to hold the Yankee settlers to her claims, nor recieved a response from America regarding Carpathian claims. Despite this we understand that the location of this settlement could be considered, by his majesty Vlad Tepes, to be an insult to Carpathia. If this is a cultural issue, we apologize, we did not mean to disrespect his majesty. However these people are of Yankee stock, and this land is rightfully ours. This is a fact that must be agreed upon.

Thirdly; we agreed following the settlement to limit further expansion, the Carpathians insisted that we settle no further west, and despite our contention that this is quite a ridiculous demand (we have proven that we were not only able to settle the area of New York before Carpathia was capable to do so, but have proven that we are also capable of defending it, something Carpathia has yet to prove in any of its so-called claims) considering that New York is clearly under American control and inhabited by American Yankees.

Now, despite our displeasure over Carpathia's constant demands to territory we are willing to discuss this issue upon our visit to Tragoviste. It is our understanding, and should be your own, that we are the only two countries in this immedeate area. Being the only two it is in both of our interests to ensure peace and mutual existance in these lands. This is the goal of our High Chief, and we hope that our visit will provide a result that both of our countries can be proud of.

Within the next month I, Jonathan Jefferson, and my colleague Benedict Arnold shall visit your fair capital city to enjoy Carpathian culture and to meet the legendary Vlad Tepes. We hope this visit will serve as an example to our people and the start of a long enduring and prosperous friendship.

(I will e-mail you at the plomp.eu address so we can plan an actual meeting time if you'd like)

-Foreign Minister to High Chief Samuel the Yankee, Jonathan Jefferson.
