Not sure I would go so far as to compare it to a kicker in Football, but you can rest assured that 2 of my last 3 picks will be mediochre defensemen, and you can also be reasonably assured that neither of them will be on my roster at the end of the season.

Last year I took both my defensemen late and was happy with them all season (though in hindsight I probably could have dropped one for a better pick part way through the season). I believe that defensemen are the least important position in this pool and try and bulk up on the forward positions (currently 3 of each) to compensate for the lack of defense production.

    • I would like to see the commissioner only be able to veto a trade if there is agreement by X number of us that the trade is an unsportmanlike attempt to build up one team at the expense of another.

What number that X is would be another matter however, should be high enough that one or two don't veto a reasonable trade, but not so high that we need to wait for someone else to check in so that a trade gets vetoed/approved.

Should be almost a non-issue in my mind, but one that we need to address now, not when the first trade is made.

      • trade is an unsportmanlike attempt to build up one team at the expense of another.
Isn't the whole purpose of the trade that each side believes they're getting the better deal at the expense of the other?

If they don't think the trade will improve their team, is there a point to it?

        • If I give up on winning the league and decide to trade my top three picks for your bottom three picks I don't beleive that I am getting the better deal, I am just helping you to have a better chance at winning because I know I have no chance.

That's the only time I think a trade should be vetoed. Your example is a legitimate trade in my opinion.

The problem lies in that the commissioner (NYE, Kontiki or anyone else) may feel a trade falls under my example whereas the trade is actually your example. I would prefer to see a group of us so that no one person has the power to veto a trade without first gaining a consensus opinion.

          • I think league vote should be the setting.

Just in case someone is not that up on things and decides to trade for a player who is injured for the rest of year or something. But that's a rare situation and that's the only reason I think a trade should be invalidated.

I thought that was the rule but it leads to a question

I haver Brunette -- listed only as a leftwinger but who will apparently start the season on right wing-- I alsohave Jordon staal-- listed as a centre but going to play left wing. When does yahoo chan ge their listings ?

AS it stands, If I can use Brunette and Staal where they will play, I have a valid roster NOW but as drafted, I need another rightwinger.

Nice table-- I have a handwritten page for each team set out in the same manner. But you might want to correct one thing-- I have one fewer player than I should-- I really don't think you should write off evgeni nabokov quite yet

My only reason would be something that would be almost impossible to prove-- that one of the parties to the trade was TRYING to benefit the other player and was not sincerely attempting to improve their own team.

Othyer than that, I think any trade that comes from the real attempt by two parties to improve their own situation, should be allowed.

Does the trade an injured player thing EVER occurr?? Wouldn't it be basic due diligence to check out a site or two to check out the status of whom you are trading for? If you wanted to cover this, you could have a 48 hour right to "back out" of a trade after it is announced

                  • It seems we are headed towards a consensus of some form of group decision to block a trade. I'm happy with whatever you guys want.

Scenario. I'm not saying this is what hapened, I am asking what if this happens...

Player A has Kipper. Kipper goes down with a serious injury (broken arm or leg) in a game.

Player B picks up Calgary's backup goalie after the injury.

Within 24 hours of picking up the Calgary backup, player B offers the backup to player A for a top line skater.

                    What should happen?

                        • Just like in the NHL, it's all about making the most out of the opportunities. I don't see any issue with picking up a player from a free agent pool that you intend to use as trade bait.

I think that it depends - there are scenarios where that would be a fair trade, assuming the backup goalie were decent (expected not to be terrible). I doubt i'd block it in any event.

This sort of trade I'd not block because the only reason to block a trade, to me, is if one player is giving up, and dropping players either to hurt another player, or just not caring; or, perhaps, an experienced player ripping off a new player. Even the latter I usually won't consider, because we're not children here, and all of us should be capable of determining if a trade will hurt us or not.

Trades shouldn't be blocked just because they're not one I'd make myself ... or else why not just have me (or the commissioner) do all of the trade proposing and accepting also.

                            • Let's say the "backup" goalie was more than decent and was one of the top goalies for the remainder of the season.

I think this discussion is why the commish should not be the one to veto. nye in particular has expressed his interest in vetoing any trade he finds unfair, which is his opinion alone (and in the hypothetical situation above, he would have vetoed a rather fair trade).

To be honest, I think no consensus should be necessary. It's the responsibility of the two parties involved to each judge if it'll be a fair trade for their team, not what Gary Bettman believes.

                              • And if the rest of the league believes that trade is not a fair trade it should be allowed to stand?

Lets say that in january NYE is in 9th place in the league with little or no chance of catching up. Asher is in 1st (like that is going to happen ), and Sparrowhawk is in 2nd. NYE offers me Joe Thorton and Marion Gaborik in exchange for Rod Brind A'mour and Ales Hemsky. NYE and I believe it is a fair trade (and NYE is excited to just get Hemsky), how do you feel about the trade Asher? Any complaints from you?
