Hear Ye! A Scenario for Freeciv!

Gentlemen, we are about to tread into unknown territory. Noone has ever completed a full-fledged scenario for Freeciv... yet!

Due to the lack of a stable map editor, I suggest starting out with an existing Freeciv map as base. There are a few over at the map section that would work well.

I recommend we use the British Isles because it is 1) limited in scope (some of the others are frickin' huge) and 2) properly released under the GPL and can be modified and distributed together with Freeciv itself.

What do you think about the idea? What could be an interesting backdrop for a scenario that takes place on the British Isles?

    Good news!

I think a remake of 'Seize The Crown' by John Ellis would be a nice one to make on FreeCiv.

    Sounds intriguing!

I could start writing the nationsets (my specialty) and then move on to techs, units, and buildings (in roughly that order.)

Looking at rules.txt I can see the leaders and their 'nations', but no city names. Or am I not looking hard enough?

There are some great units for the 1600-1700 era...

An English Civil War scen could be fun!

How about a scenario about football hooligans in Britain during the 1980s? The cities could be the various clubs!

Seriously though, I think Sieze the Crown would make a lot of sense. John Ellis put a lot of work into the terrain development and improvements. At the moment we are playing a PBEM of STC at Civ Webring with a load of Jamestout's units replacing the originals.

    Sounds exciting

Hm, well, I might actually prefer starting a scen from scratch after all. When I started scratching the surface, there were so much in 'STC' that was potentially impossible to do in Freeciv (without having the programmers code it) or would function very differently. We would probably end up reinventing most of the scenario. I'd like to try something more realistic for this first try!

    So, English Civil War?

Could someone please take a look at the map to confirm that it is suitable for this kind of scenario? Download Freeciv from freeciv.org (2.1.0-beta6-gtk2 recommended) install and start the game, then click 'Start Scenario Game' from the main menu and double-click the map from the list. If you want to see the whole map without exploring, select the 'Chat' tab, type "/observe" (without the quotes) and hit enter!

This discussion seems to have lost momentum. Too bad.

Anyway, in the meantime you can check out a new editor package. It is alpha level software, which means that all features have not been implemented yet. It's mainly good for modifying terrain, cities and units, which it does fairly well.

    ftp://ftp.freeciv.org/freeciv/packag...gtk2-setup.exe

To use it, start or load a game as usual. Well in-game, use the Editor menu to enter or leave editor mode and bring up the editor tool panel. Note that while attached to a player, you can only edit tiles within you line of sight. To see and edit the whole map, go to the chatline and enter /observe.

I will take a look at the editor, seems interesting...!

I think the English civil war is a good choice - I think you should go ahead and make a thread.

Then we can see what kind of tasks need to be done to get things moving!
