  • AI Colony Behaviour

Just wanted to mention an interesting thing the AI did with founding a colony in my current game. I was the first to discover the "New World" and began agressively settling it (destroying all natives in my path). Some years later, the Chinese found it as well and settled, but I had a head start and my influence was spreading over the continent. One year, the Chinese decided to grant independance to its colony. I thought this was a big mistake, because somehow this allowed my borders to expand even more (I have not granted my colony independance because I can handle the maintenance). The new Chinese colony is now very small and I can imagine winning over the whole colony to cultural influence, however I'm not so sure this was a mistake by the Chinese anymore. Seeing their colony doomed to failure, perhaps they gave up and left the colony to fend for itself to save on maintenace. The question is, was the AI smart, dumb, or lucky? Was this done purposely or happenstance?
