  • Interner radio set to die on July 15.

At least in the US. The Republican Controlled Congress passed a bill last year which requires internet radio stations to pay 800%-1200% higher royalty fees then satellite radio basically meaning that most internet radio stations based out of the US will be going belly up in just three weeks. The sad fact is this is a direct result of lobbying from the old fashioned terrestrial radio stations and satellite radio companies who want to use regulations to shut down competition from internet radio sites which they have been unable to beat in the open market. This type of protectionism is bad for America because every other country will continue to develop internet radio but all the internet radio stations in the US will be forced into bankruptcy. The end result is people will still listen to internet radio but they will not be American companies that they listen to. This just doesn't make sense for the country as a whole.

Also traditional radio broadcasters aren't even legally required to pay royalties to artists because Congress has declared that radio is such a promotional value that radio stations don't need to pay royalty rates. Listen to this broadcast if you want to learn the details:

If you are an American Citizen and you would like to help end this unfair practice and prevent the bankruptcy of most of America's internet radio stations then go to www.savenetradio.org and send a letter to your Congressman.

The really unfair part is traditional radio isn't required to pay royalties but internet radio has ALWAYS paid royalties. The problem is the new royalty rates have been set so high that that they are almost always several times the entire gross yearly revenue of most internet radio stations. Before Congress said that it wanted to promote internet radio and American artists so they set royalty rates as a fixed 10% cut of gross revenues so that artists got paid but internet radio didn't go bankrupt.

The RIAA is literally killing all of America's internet radio industry with this unfair royalty system which requires internet radio to pay 500% more then satellite radio while traditional radio pays nothing at all. This just isn't fair.

Pandora and Soma FM both play great music.

Soma was the shiz for chillaxing tunes. Does this affect podcasts too?

Yes, anything broadcast over the internet must now pay a flat fee per listener instead of a fixed percentage of income. Soma is probably the largest current internet broadcaster for several music styles yet it is still a small business with gross revenues of around $200,000 per year. None of their staff is paid and instead just works for the chance to build experience in the radio industry. The new rate structure would require Soma to pay $600,000 per year in royalties to the RIAA or about three times the station's gross revenues. Pandora is in the same boat. Virtually all of the internet radio stations will go bankrupt.

Sadly, the RIAA's bill is designed to bankrupt internet radio stations because they have allied with traditional broadcasters and satellite broadcasters who don't want to have free competition from internet radio. It's a really unfair system which will go into effect on the 15th of next month unless Congress intervenes and changes last year's Republican law.

When the government here tried to be that restrictive with regards to radio stations the broadcasters just went offshore and flouted the rules. Eventually things changed.

Damn, that's enough to send me into a liberal fervor. I don't understand the reasoning behind such a bill. I mean yeah the evil corporate plot, but how they could mask it as sound policy.

I imagine that is what will happen. The RIAA will attempt to **** it's competition via regulations, the competition will just end up off shore, and hopefully people will figure out that the bastards at the RIAA acted unfairly and that the net result was to force thousands of American companies to move operations off shore.

Getting decent music without the constant commercial pressure of the bigger record labels forcing their music on the station is the big problem. The internet has and should continue to front the revolution in this respect.

Do you think it is plausible that we will see a reversal wherein the commercial stations will be on the net and all of the other services will migrate to the, hypothetically, abandoned airwaves?

The sad fact is the RIAA claims it is collecting royalties for the artists but only 2% of the royalty payments it collects actually gets to the artists. The other 98% gets sucked up by the RIAA as overhead costs. It's a joke.

House Bill HR2060 and Senate Bill S1353 are the bills you need to get your Congressmen to support. Currently 200 members of the House has signed on as cosponsors of the bill (100 Republicans and 100 Democrats) but the neither the house or the senate has scheduled a vote to take place. People need to write to their members of Congress and urge them to make the vote happen before most of America's internet radio industry is forced into bankruptcy on July 15th.

Do metal artists get royalties for the music played at gitmo? [/spinal tap]

Seriously though, I signed the petition the first time this came around (Nostromo posted it I think), and I'll fire off an email to my congressman. Thanks for keeping us updated, I care, but not enough to check up on this stuff myself.

I'm going to write a hand written letter to both my rep and Senator. I'm hoping hand written letters get more notice then e-mails.
