Ahmadinejad under fire for embracing his old teacher

At a ceremony on Tuesday ahead of Iranian teachers' day, Mr Ahmadinejad was photographed and filmed by state media stooping to kiss the woman's hand and then clasping her arms in an embrace.

The ultra-conservative Hezbollah newspaper, which is not related to the group in Lebanon of the same name, criticised him on the front page.

"The Muslim Iranian people have no recollection of such acts contrary to sharia law during Islamic rule [since the 1979 revolution]," it said.

"This type of indecency progressively has grave consequences, like violating religious and sacred values."

The elderly woman, who was not named, wore thick gloves along with a headscarf and long black coat, meaning that Mr Ahmadinejad avoided any skin contact.

But his action raised eyebrows because according to sharia law, it is forbidden for a man to have any physical contact with a woman to whom he is not related.

Actually, maybe it indicates that Ahmadinejad is entering disgrace. If the ultra-conservative newspapers are allowed to lambast him about this "scandal" (that would require the mullahs' agreement), then Ahmadinejad might be utterly pwnd in the next elections, having neither the reform nor the reactionary vote.

I never took interest in these questions during my studies, but I recall reading / hearing that the case is different with elderly women, who are not considered sexual, just like it is a different case with little girls for the same reason, do not have to wear burkas...
Shari'ah rests on fall premises, but is mostly logical and often influenced by common sense.

I'm trying to be reasonable. I don't like the idea of shari'ah, but it's not like it was created (only) by people with no brains. Often it shows a lot of common sense. For example, it forbids creating images of men, but that does not apply to toys.

Ok, so where is the common sense in this?

I mean, I just can't come up with a one good reason for this. It's pretty difficult to defend having the right to make pics, since I have no idea why it would be bad thing, so how do I defend it? Common sense seems to be out of the question since it was already taken by the other side. Maybe I can blame you for being an aggressor?

I thought Fox news was really, really desperate for something to fill the day's tabloids with when I saw that article. Think: hobbies, fitness, MMA, comic books.... there are a lot of things that can fight boredom people. Don't sink to the level of squabbling over a kiss on a hand someone did years ago.
