  • Where are you ancestors from

I'm 1/2 Scottish on my father's side (from Aye Shire but my family name is English so some where someone moved from England to Scotland), 3/8ths English on my mother's side, and 1/8th French-Canadian also on my mother's side. I'd like to know more about my family's history and although my family tree has been researched back to the 1480's I know little about them other then their names.

On my mother's side her family name was French from the Trois Riveres area of Quebec but I know little about the background of the women who married her male relations. I know that her familt was originally from Bordeaux but were shipped to New France for being debters sometime between 1560 and 1580. In New France they owned a leather tannery and a public house but my great-great-great-grandfather was forced to flee Canada after a failed rebellion by the French against the British. They moved to Illinois after that and remained in Chicago until my grand parents moved to Southern California after WW2. My father's family were all either farmers or machinists in Scotland until my great-grandfather, who was the youngest son of nine children, joined the army in the run up to the Boer War. My father's family moved to the US in 1948.

    What's your family background?

BTW my mother's grandfather was a US infantryman in WW1 and suffered from PTSD for the rest of his life; sometimes it was worse then other times. Her father was a US Army Air Corp pilot in WW2 who flew a grand total of one combat mission in his Mustang before the war ended. He told me he never saw a Japanese plane (they'd all be shot down by the time he'd gotten there). On my dad's side his grandfather was older by the time WW1 started (remember he'd fought in the Boer War) so he got a nice cushy quartermaster's job for the entire war. My grandfather started off as a coal miner in Scotland and tried to enlist when the war started but the British Army refused him saying that people working in war critical industries could not enlist. He latter moved to America and began painting airplanes for the Douglas Aircraft Company before striking off on his own and starting a painting company which he later sold when he retired. My Mom was a human resources manager while my dad is a electrical engineer.

Father: 1/2 German, 1/4 English, 1/4 Scottish. (He was born in Germany and raised in Britain.)
Mother: Mix of English, Scottish, Welsh, and Norwegian. Her ancestors were immigrants to America, so I don't know exact percentages.

      So that's me, a confused Anglo/German/American mixed-breed.

Anyhoo, don't know the fractional break-up or from what sides of whose family, but I'm Scottish (family traced back at least 200 years to the Highlands), Irish(?), English, French, German, and Commie ...er, Russian.

I think he knows that. He's probably worried he could rot his liver away in one sitting if he's not careful, given his ancestry...

yup, I had two great uncles (or something) who served - one killed himself after returning. He was an ambulance driver I think, he got to see more blood than anyone other than the medics. ****ing Wilson

Both sides of my family have had parts that have been in Canada for hundreds of years -- old sch00l.

I'm mostly English but I've got a bit of Russian and German in me, too.

Both of my grandfather's fought in WW2 -- in the Canadian Navy on one (served on the HMCS Bonaventure escort-carrier), and the other in the Canadian combat engineers (he actually got to shake the Queen's hand during some kind of troop greet -- he talked about it all the time).

mainly Irish, maybe 1/4 German, a touch of Portuguese, and a little Scandinavian. One of my ancestors supposedly fought with Kull the Conqueror during the Norman (~Viking) invasions of S England. Maybe it was William, I cant keep track of all these guys He fought at Hastings I think and probably had Norse in him.
