Will it have to be a Jackie Robinson type player? Someone not only one of the all-time greats, but with the disposition to take unending hideous abuse?
What if the first player to come out is someone who is already hated? Someone like Barry Bonds, Todd Bertuzzi, Carmelo Anthony? What sort of effect would that have on other gay players coming out?
What sport will have that first breakthrough? Given the general view of homosexuality in the black community, it certainly won't be in basketball; football is almost equally out of question. Hockey is definitely a possibility, with the vast majority of players coming from countries where homosexuality is comparatively a non-issue (Canada, various European states); baseball possibly, as it lacks the degree of macho strutting seen in the other sports.
Will the first player out himself, or be outted by others?
When will it finally happen? 5 years? 10? 20?
