Is there not some kind of auto-disable feature to prevent people from running that awful poly theme?

    Hm.

My current monitor is a 20.1" at 1680x1050, 1000:1 contrast ratio. It was $200. I was planning on getting a second one at some point... but that one is tempting too.

That Samsung is smaller, and from what I hear 19 to 20 is a fairly big jump as you go from 1440*900 to 1680*1050.

I tried to get a Viewsonic VX2025wm before they were totally discontinued (they are supposed to be very, very good 20" monitors, especially for the price, and the newer model is worse) for a decent price, but CompUSA sold out.

My parents' monitor was a 20" 1680*1050. It's one inch bigger and the pixels are more dense, but the only difference I've noticed was fonts being smaller (a bit too small for reasonable eye strain).

My biggest criteria was response time and contrast ratio for very crisp, saturated images.

Another consideration is strain on the video card, running at 1680*1050 is considerably more strenuous on a video card in games than 1440*900 and looks virtually the same.

1000:1 is a good contrast ratio on its own and the refresh rate is 5ms, which is fine for me. I can turn the resolution down in a game anyway.

That's absurd. All the more so because I haven't been able to find a 1920x1200 monitor for less than ~$500

I love getting every bit of resolution I can for viewing documents (Word and PDF). The font size doesn't bother me at all.

How are SCEPTRE's anyway? Pleased with the brand? I was mostly looking Viewsonic (though only one model now) and Samsung.

I currently have a 17' non-widescreen Sony which is nice.

I've had the monitor for all of a week. It's nice, but after a couple of days a blue stuck pixel appeared. It's not really noticeable, and it might go away eventually. Otherwise it's great.

It would be even better if my laptop had DVI out

Looks like the response to 64-bit Vista isn't as good. On Windows, it sucks that software isn't readily available in 64-bit.

Myself, running the 64-bit version of Linux is a breeze . Only have one problem that is specific to 64-bit systems, and it's minor. The good part, of course, is that almost all of my software is also 64-bit, with the exception of Skype and Firefox.

Why use Vista if XP is good enough? Why use Office 2007 if OpenOffice is cool? And IE 7.0 is available for WinXP as well. And you can get widgets-gadgets for desktop for XP from independent software vendors. And DX10 only games are far from being widely available. And legal users will suffer from DRM's false positives (unlike warezists using proper cracks).

    Why go Vista?

I installed 32bit linux on 64bit machine and it works perfectly with almost no performance loss. Previous attempts to install 64bit (different distro though) failed completely.

The ribbon ****ing rocks. I've been running the beta for at least six months. It is faster and easier to use than 2003 or OO.org.

Not to mention OO.org is worse than 2003 anyway.

I heard that ribbon is better than old interface, but takes time to learn. After working with it for months you surely know it well.

Is it true, that Vista's IE7 does not have built-in spellchecker?

Sometimes I do work which requires me to use MS Word instead of OOo - just did some of that with Word 2007. It took me about an hour to get used to the ribbon. It's probably bad for "grandma" users who get confused even by the smallest changes, but average or better users will learn the ribbon fast.

I've spent like 5-10 minutes with Word in Office 2007 (just toying around to see the possibilities) and I'm already used to it
This space is empty... or is it?
