  • Game Crashes when installed 12-21-2006

I just bought a new PC and CTP wont play but crashes to desktop. Here are the facts:

I can get the game to play normal (Not PBEM) in either MP or single player

When I click on a PBEM save it crashes to desktop with this error to report: FE49-CCF1 abnormal termination.

I tried picking a program to open it with and tried both the .exe file and the PLATCTP file

    Neither allows it to launch.

I am frustrated but not beaten.

I have an Activision Value version, which includes the patch. I did try to install the patch but it prompted me I didnt need to.

Ok, I am open to suggestions, so all with expertise please tell me which way I should proceed.

My new PC is an HP Intel core 2 CPU 6400@ 2.13 GHZ 500 Gig HD with 2 Gigs ram (I have 4 more Gigs on order) and Graphics Card is Radeon X1600 512 Ram.

    Ok, help away folks

Should I presume that the CD you used to install CTP was the same you used to install it in your old PC?

Have you tried to unistall CTP and install it again? Perhaps you got some file(s) corrupted during the installation. I am asking because you're not mentioning whether you did that.

      The same CD yes Keygen.

Yes I did an uninstall/reinstall twice.

I can play the game in single or Multiplayer, just when it comes to PBEM the game wont load from my email.

      Thanks

Did you try to launch CTP first and then load the turn from within CTP?

Do you use the same version of Windows you used with your old PC?

Do a good search if not already in this forum in case someone else had the same issues and got a solution.

Hiya, Gramps! It's been a long while.

When I played CtP pbem with you, I was NEVER able to launch into the game from an attachment. (I also had the Activision Value CD with the updates.) Yes, it's a lot of extra clicks to open the game first, but I just got used to it. Not much help, sorry. Merry Christmas!!

If double clicking a .csg file in Windows Explorer doesn't start CtP, then the .csg file type is not correctly associated with the command to start CtP. In order to repair that, you have two options:
            1) Import a suitable registry file
            2) Use Windows Explorer

For option 1) I have attached a zipped registry file. The only problem with this one is, that I use Win2k, so I cannot guarantee that it works for WinXP. You can import the file into the registry by double clicking the (unzipped) registry file in Windows Explorer. Before you do, check the path, where you installed CtP. If it is different from "C:\Program Files\Activision\Civilization-Call To Power", you'll have to edit the registry file and correct the path in the last line to meet your path. Use double backslashes to separate directories.

For option 2) you'll have to use Windows Explorer. Since I use a German version of Win2k, the explanatations that follow might be different from what is suitable for an English WinXP. I'll try to translate what I see on my monitor and hopefully that'll match what you see. From the main menu in Windows Explorer choose "Extras"-->"Folder Options...". In the dialog that opens select the tab "File types". In the alphabetically sorted list of file types search for "CSG". If it isn't there, press the "New" button. In the dialog that opens enter "CSG" and press "OK". Now the "CSG" type is in the list. Select it, if it isn't already selected. Press the "Details" button to open the details dialog. In the edit box near the top of the dialog enter "Call to Power saved game" (omit the double quotes; this is what Windows Explorer will display in the "Type" column). Now it's time to configure the "Open" action for that file type. If the action list is empty, choose "New" otherwise remove all entries but the first one, then select the first entry and choose "Edit". A small dialog opens in both cases. For the action name (first edit box) enter "Open" (omitting the double quotes) and for the command line (second edit box) enter (including all double quotes, even the two leading ones and the trailing one!; if your installation path is different, adjust accordingly) ""C:\Program Files\Activision\Civilization-Call To Power\ctp_program\CTP\CivCTP.exe" -l"%1". Ensure that the "DDE" box is not checked. Close all dialogs using "OK" (or "Close", if there is no "OK" button).

Now, after using option 1) or option 2), double clicking a saved game file should start CtP and load the game. Neither option corrects any crashes, they just associate the .csg file type with CtP in the right way.

              Thanks Hatschy

I have Windows Explorer 7 and couldnt find any of the options you listed anywhere in Explorer.

If anyone has Explorer and knows where this path is, please respond here.

              Thanks

Not Internet Explorer, Gramps. That Explorer you need is the program you view files with. The one you get when you open "my computer", "my documents" or any folder.

"Extras" is supposed to be "Tools".

Starting a new single player game and saving the first turn right after fresh installing CTP, should most likely associate CTP with .csg files.

I can play MP games (with dynamic join option alowed) and reload a save

I can play Single player and load up saves no problem

Since Hatschy and then Solver followed by Keygen I have been trying all sorts of combinations.

I used ""C:\Program Files\Activision Value\Civilization-Call to Power\ctp_program\CTP\CivCTP.exe" -1"%1" which is what Hatschy suggested but used Value after Activision because this is what version it is.

When I put this in the field it denies me the ability to save it.

I tried changing CTP to lower case as well as after civ to lower case. I also tried removing the mumbers at the end.

                      Nothing

But, something has happened because when I went to open a couple email games that previously wouldnt now when I click on the save file it launches the game to the menu to play either MP or Single

If it werent for being my favorite game, I would just forget about it

                      Ok

                      Options?

There are two problems with the command string you entered: The first one is my mistake (sorry ) : There should only be one leading double quote. I don't know why, but on my PC it is stored with two leading double quotes and it works, although this is an error. The second problem is at the end of the command string you entered: The letter after the hyphen is not a "1" (the digit) but an "l", the small letter "L".

You can easily verify that this command string works: Open a command (shell) window and enter the command string, replacing the %1 at the end with the path of some saved game on your hard disk as shown in the attached picture. After hitting the Enter key CtP will start and load the specified game.
