Do I have to remind you that Apolyton is against piracy, which that patch certainly is?![]()

Oops!
I had no idea this patch was illegal!
The fact that CFC had it up made me think it was a legit utility...!
OK...link withdrawn!
Herreson, you can easily pick up MGE from a variety of web-vendors.
Check this:

It's technically illegal, though whoever owns the corpse of Microprose these days has never bothered to cease-and-desists CFC about it. The comparison between ethics and legality is an interesting area of inquiry.

(Although, if the ghost of Microprose did sue us, we could enquire about the source code!)

Bah! Don't listen to Mercator. He sees more pirates than Johnny Depp.![]()

Well, of course, I can see much further sitting up on my high horse. Especially when it's standing on a stack of burned CD's.
I.e. nevermind I'm an opportunistic, hypocritical bastard...
Still have to go see the movie, though. I think it only opens tomorrow over here.

The new movie is OK - If you liked the first Pirates farce, you'll like this one too.

We even have a polotical party here in Sweden named The pirate party![]()
Anyways, I also thought it was legal in the past, then someone here corrected me. I haven't even found Civ2 gold in my country for MANY years though.![]()

As far as I know, the vast majority of "abandonware" is illegal. Just because something isn't available in stores anymore doesn't make it legal to get it for free, as much as everyone may think it should be, and as much as most people, including software publishers, I imagine, don't care too much if you do get it for free.
Or as Wikipedia puts it:
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abandonware
Abandonware is computer software which is no longer being sold or supported by its copyright holder. Sometimes, it is used as a blanket category for any software over a certain age, usually five years.
The term has no legal meaning. This means that labeling any kind of software 'abandonware' does not make it legal to use it without paying or make copies of it. Unless the author puts the software in the public domain, any and all abandonware remains covered under copyright law until its copyright term expires.
Yeah, I did like the first one (I'm a bit partial to Johnny Depp).Originally posted by curtsibling

Yes, TECHNICALLY, using/modifying abandonware IS illegal.
HOWEVER . . . .
If the company that produced said software is no longer extant . . . . .
Then then are NO consequences and NO enforcement.
Much, but not all, legality is based on potential for HARM. Kind of difficult to "harm" a company that doesn't exist anymore.
The "law" may be clear, but PRACTICAL considerations sometimes moot it.
Here's another wacko example; In my hometown right to the present day, it is illegal to move any motor vehicle through a road intersection without first shutting it off, walking to the center of the intersection, and firing off a warning shot from a gun. To say that this is absurdly impractical misses another point; that it would violate weapons laws that have been enacted since that time. The "law" isn't everything . . . . .

I guess the issue here is that in the past the owners of this site have stepped in on this board to remove links to MGE patch at CFC. As it's a very long standing site policy, there isn't a lot of point whinging (especially as I've let my subscription to Aployton Plus lapse)

They'd probably get arrested for disturbing public order or something.

Though perhaps the most important reason why I decided once upon a time that I didn't like that MGE patch was because it promoted MGE, and it kept everyone using and making scenarios for MGE, while ToT is the superior scenario creation platform.
And at CFC they're pretty confused about the issue too. They basically promote that patch, they have an MGE no-CD patch among the downloads, but they didn't allow Catfish posting a no-CD patch for ToT because it was illegal.
Oh, and, technically, no-CD patches and even the no-limits patches are equally illegal. But well, I don't care about that.
So well, you're right, really. But sometimes I can't help kicking against things so I can feel morally superior for a minute, or just to play devil's advocate.![]()

I need a no-cd crack for MGE as well, please![]()

What did you do with the patch?

Or actually, another thing you can do...
Download and install Daemon Tools (if you don't have WinXP you should scroll down to find version 3.47):
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/down...tegory&catid=5
Download my attachment and unzip it. You'll get a file called civ2.iso.
When you run Daemon Tools (I think it's set to run automatically on start up), you'll see an icon in the tasktray (next to the clock on the taskbar).
Right-click on that icon and select "Mount" (it's in the menu somewhere). Select the civ2.iso. You now have a virtual Civ2 CD in a virtual CD drive.
Play Civ2.

I guess the no-cd patch doesn't work if you upgrade to mge via the patch on civfanatics. :P
