I think the only rank above General is President

Only one unit lost: that is impressive. I’d been ordering the production of a large number of marble commemorative statues and it looks like we won’t be needing them. Maybe we can sell some to the Mongols Now if only the barbarians would fight like the Mongols.

There will be a great feast celebrating the capture of the Mongol capital while we press our troops to capture yet another one. We were trying some recent drink that was brought to us from an Apolyton merchant made with fruit growing around the river. Tastes bloody awful though I’m sure, if we had a king, he’d know how to make it drinkable. Kings are like that. So as per usual, the celebratory drink will be fermented banana milk-shakes with nutmeg. We are also experiment with various drink recipes using corn but as yet have nothing to show for our efforts.

Congrats Ruby. I see the President has created a new title. Naturally, the marble quarry will be busy over the next few months building the celebratory monuments for each of our cities.

Lots of good reports coming back from the front. When some of the news arrived we were a little worried but our Marshall and his troops displayed great skill and courage.

Our raiding party was well able to repel the bombardment they received from Turfan - the forest-savvy warrior managing to escape from the battle with some wounds.

The landing on our western peninsula was perceived as a threat but the scale of the incursion was easy to deal with. Despite having naval forces in the area, the decision to allow the troops to land and then attack them on the beaches proved to be sound. Let’s hope that Kublai doesn’t send even more of his archers over

Great success with Beshbalik and the decision to use Bigfoot in the early battle was the right one. I think the idea of saving the elephants to battle the mounted troops would only have made sense if there had been plenty of spare swordsmen to take on the archers.

Anyway, you’ve gotta love the role-call of City Raider Swordsman –I think we have seven now (and two Swordsman of the Forest). No doubt they are keen to join battle with the Marshall Ruby. I’ll come back later with some thoughts on army composition but for now we can be thankful for fine warriors and a great General, I mean Marshall.

Having checked through the current battle lists and taking into consideration the current training programs in Apolyton, Paddyton, Iron Tusks and The Lake, I would like to compose some ideas for our army composition.

I am, naturally, sensitive to the concerns of the MoF and the scientific community who rightly argue that we are falling behind in technological advancement. We shall therefore endeavour to ensure that our military expenditure is adequate for the needs of the day.

It is my hope that we should be able, in future, to conduct war far more quickly and efficient manner. Since we have the necessary forces to break into cities, our main delays are due to the time it takes for our sole cat to wear down the city defenses. I propose that land based military building will concentrate on raising our current number up first to four and then to seven to allow us to completely destroy any fortifications on arrival at an enemy city.

For the city assaults, we currently have 7 swordsman who are trained in this field and another being built in Iron Tusks. I propose that we should maintain 6-8 of these units as a long term city assault force.

To supplement these units we also have 4 horse archers and another 3 being built. These are expected to be used as a mobile defensive unit but might participate in city raids if needed. I believe that 7 of these units would be sufficient.

In other areas of land based military, I can perhaps see some argument for one or two archers to operate as city garrisons and free up the more specialist units.

Finally, we will need to start building up a navy for our eastern coast. This will operate partly as an exploratory force and partly to protect our fishing areas of the northern coast.

Now that our mounted units have been improved, I am interested to here some discussions on the decommissioning of our chariot troops. Whilst they remain a mobile unit. Many of these seem to be suited only as sentries and scouts. In the current environment, it is hard to argue for the continued support costs of 6 of these units.

These build plans have taken into account longer term objectives of the military. It does not fully consider replacing units or the costs of any unforeseen expeditions/ventures. Those matters, notwithstanding, the War Department will soon release most of our cities to return to peacetime building objectives. With the agreement of the MoI, the War Department would like to retain the use of Iron Tusks for more long term military building since its commercial uses are limited.

I agree that we require more catpults to speed our armies path into the cities we may need to liberate.

I also concur that the chariots have probably outlived their usefulness.

The MoD/War Department recognises the valuable work done by garrisons and sentries and would not wish to decommission those particular units. Just those which would be considered "surplus to requirement".

p.s. It's possible that we might use a chariot in the future for scouting other islands - particularly those promoted with "Sentry". So I am probably suggesting only 2 or 3 decomissions and even then, only when we are certain that the unit has no further use for us.

Don’t worry nugog. Opinions are always helpful and I think there is a reasonable decent consensus that we don’t want to keep all of the Chariots. I myself has argued in favour or decommissioning them but also needed to explain what I mean by “surplus to requirements”.

There has been many games I’ve played with the odd warrior protecting my capital in the industrial age. All the unit does is to remove the “We feel unprotected” unhappiness and a warrior is as good for this as 30 machine-guns.

So the question is really meant to be directed at individual units and for the War Dept to justify that the unit in question is worth paying 1 gpt for (actually I think its 0.67 gpt)

As can be seen from our recent history, the War Department has been very active over this term of office. We have also been blessed with a fine commander in the field who has managed the military operations with great skill.

The one aspect of the department that has perhaps been left a little open-ended is the organisation of the military so it is with this in mind, that I have decided to draft a rough guide to the categorisation of troops into distinct areas. The groupings are designed to give a rough idea of the responsibilities of different units. They should be kept fairly flexible and individual troops assigned to one or other group may, from time to time, be used for other purposes.

    The five main groups are

    1) Garrison and tile defence
    2) Mobile defence and sentry duty
    3) Main assault troops
    4) Army support
    5) Special forces

Naval forces are not currently included in the

The unit names and promotions are those shown on official War Department records which may be out of date. Any errors or omissions should be forwarded to Operations Department of the Ministry of Defense.

    Total units
    Archer (4)
    Spearmen (3)
    Chariots (6)
    Axemen (5)
    Swordsmen (6)
    Catapults (5)
    Horse Archers (5)
    War Elephants (1)

Garrison/tile defense - These units primary role is to provide basic security for the city dwellers. This can often be a symbolic force. Archer units are the preferred defensive unit with axemen as second choice
    Archer Little Jim(Promos?) -
    Archer ???(Promos?) - Paddyton
    Archer ???(Promos?) - Metaliturtleton
    Archer ???(Promos?) -
Spearman Tusk (Combat I) - Apolyton
Spearman Mint (Combat II) – Iron Tusks
Axeman Chopper (Promos?) - The Lake
    ?
    ?

Mobile defence/Sentry - A medium sized and mobile defensive force that can swiftly react to attacks across our extensive borders. Mounted troops are the preferred units here although some other troops (eg Axemen) might reduce the vulnerability of these defenses to spearmen.
    Chariot Rochelle (Flanking/Sentry)
    Chariot Marshall (Flanking/Sentry)
    Chariot Postman (Flanking/Sentry)
    Chariot Maxine (Flanking)
    Chariot Bad Girls (Flanking)
Horse Archer Slim Jim (Flanking II)
    Horse Archer Horatio (Flanking I)

First Army Group - This is our primary force used to capture cities from our enemies. It comprises catapults which will primarily be used to weaken defenses and swordsmen for the main assault.
Swordsman Fang (City Raider III, Woodsman)
    Swordsman Strutter (City Raider III)
    Swordsman Glamdring (City Raider I)
Swordsman Tiger Eyes (City Raider I)
    Catapult Mungles(Barrage)
    Catapult Stray Cats(Barrage)
    Catapult Bacardi Breezer (Barrage)
    Catapult The Crushinator (Barrage)
    Catapult Rocker (Barrage)

Army Support - These units provide defense, sentry and medical services for our frontline city assault troops so allow them to reach their target fresh for combat. Key threats are from melee troops and catapults
Spearman Rubygrad 3rd Guards (Combat I, Medic) – Medic/Horse Archer Defence
Chariot ChiPs (Combat I, Flanking, Sentry, Medic) – Medic/Pillager/Sentry
War Elephant BigFoot (Flanking I/Sentry) – Horse Archer Defence/Axeman Defence/Secondary Assault Forces
    Horse Archer Colt (Flanking/Sentry) – Catapult Defence/Sentry
Horse Archer Dylan (Flanking) – Catapult Defence
Axeman Stormin Norman(City Raider II ) – Swordsman Defence/Secondary Assault Forces

Special forces – For deep incursions into enemy territory/cutting communications/diversionary attacks/pillaging resources. Also used to defend First Army Group when moving in forests.
    Axeman Arthur (Woodsman II)
    Axeman Jack Lives (Woodsman II)
    Axeman Axel (Woodsman II)
    Axeman Slee (Woodsman II)
Swordsman Slash (Woodsman II, City Raider I)

    As yet unassigned
    Swordsman Sting (Woodsman I)

    Um...

Didn't we want a galley on the east coast. I'm not so interested in having this for military reasons (although the Mongol navy could easily come round and pillage the fishing areas of Povo Este) but I thought we needed the boat to sail up north and take a look and try to spy out the foreign lands.

    Or something....

there was some issue with ocean tiles being on coast, not allowing galleys access...

I am not sure when this was last looked at, or how far the matter was investigated
