Karakorum

The Mongolian Capital is on a hilltop, and has 3 archers there at the moment. With war declared, I can only assume that more units will be built there asap.
I propose the immediate build of 2 catapults. These to be brought to the walls of Karakorum and smash the cities defences.
Then all available units are to swarm the city until it has been taken.
This is dangerous, and could be costly.
Once the city is taken, I propose that our diplomats sue for peace with the mongols, and in that demanding as much tribute and technology as possible.
We can take up the war again at a later stage![]()
They will be without their horse and iron resources.

Karakorum

The mongols lost patrol has been found, and they are near. There are many things that can be said for what we will do to them, but until they commit to a course of action they are harmless out there. We have enough troops to take them out, and protect our lands. My goal is to let them in and hit them hard.

Removing the mongols access to horses is a must!
Hopefully this is their only supply.
To save me time (cos I'm being lazy), where do I find the save of the last turn? I would like to have a look at the makeup and promotions etc of our force.
I have concerns over the defending force, their promotions and the city being placed on a hill.
I do agree that catapults are absolutely necessary for our liberation of Karakorum to be both successful and as cost effective in manpower as possible.
I would however advise caution in unleashing the unholy hordes of diplomats prematurely. We must take the opportunity of being in the state of war to aggressively scout the territory they currently hold, pillage what we deem necessary to our domestic security, potentially liberate some workers, and generally raise merry hell.![]()
If the diplomats have their way, it may be some time until this opportunity arises again.

All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

I too would like a complete recon of our top-knotted firend!!
I hear Beshbalik houses The Great Lighthouse and I would one day like to occupy said lighthouse and do a modern minimalist conversion to it. I then propose to wear chunky wool jumpers, walk around with a rough stuble and have a permanent thoughtful look on my face!!
General Ruby, please arrange for this to be so and I would be ever so grateful!!![]()

With our decision that we will take and keep Karkaorum, the goal of pillaging the mongolian countryside drops down the pegging order a bit. As it can only be to our benefit to take the town and the lands in good order.
We still want to cut their horse resource as soon as possible. This means we will face less keshiks in the long run.
To this end I propose that our 3 charoits (in yellow circle) race along yellow line to horses (dark blue circle) and pillage it. This also allows for Rochelle, with her extended view to open up a great deal of the north (light green circle)![]()
Supported.I propose the immediate build of 2 catapults. These to be brought to the walls of Karakorum and smash the cities defences.

My views on future actions (keep Karakorum, make peace) have been voted in the other threads.

This is the opening position for Term III 19th Turn Chat
War Elephant: 1
Chariot: 6
Swords: 2
Axemen: 6
Spearman: 5
Archers: 3
Catapult: 1
Workers: 5
29 Units![]()

It is and was a good plan.
I was wondering if any potential plan to capture KK and Besh would require more Swords. When taking cities, these will be a much cheaper option for us.
Did I really ask for a galley? I thought I was just thinking out loud that we might need to build one in the area to protect MTTT's food and ultimately for control of the coast. Now I think about, I did mention something about mastery of the seasGetting a bit ahead of the game here

This land will be ours one day.

We have two specialist swords on hand, and I will see to it that we have more in time for taking Beshbalik.

I wonder if we might captured that barbarian coastal city while Mungles is softening up the defenders of Karakorum. Hmmm..![]()
Still a bit confused why KK is keeping all his horses in the cities. Is he expecting a massed catapult raid? I did a little play testing yesterday and figured that he could have taken out those three chariots with his two Keshiks. In 10 combats, Keshiks won 80% and 50% were still stronger than a fresh chariot after the battle.
For comparison of city attacks:
Sword (City Raider) 7.80 (Cost: 50 hammers)
Elephant 8.00 (or 8.80) with Combat I (Cost: 75 hammers)
Horse Archer 6.00 or 6.60 (CI) but immune to first strikes (Cost: 62 hammers)
Stated in other ways (combat points per 100 hammers)
Swords. 15.60
Elephant: 10.67 or 11.73
HArcher: 9.67 or 10.65
Note that the defenders in 0% city are
Archer (CG2): 8.10
Archer (CG1): 7.35

Here's me again for my Saturday 1-hour visit to share my thoughts on stage two of the operation to remove forever the threat from the Mongols.
I'll start first with some brief comments about threats that a new war may bring
Barbarian - These primarily concern Rubygrad and Apolyton although Iron Tusks will also be in the firing line as long as that city is there. The threat will be reduced as border expansions clear more FOW although allowing time for RG to expand will slightly delay the timing of Operation Lighthouse. For the rest, we just want to keep FOW minimal in spawning areas that threaten us since barb axeman and swords require extra garrisons that cost money.
Although elephants are the best units for fighting either axes or swords, I do not if we want to wait for us to have two more of these purely for defensive duties. The alternative would be Axeman to counter Barb Swords and Horse Archers to counter the Axes and the Archers. Still expensive but we have a few axemen already performing defensive duties.
All this really points to the need to take out that barb city before the war and I think this is our current plan.
Mongol
Judging by the last war, we might think that KK will just wait in his cities while we march up and take them. I would still plan for the worst. He may be able to turn three units against us that might cause us more problems than we want.
Keshik - We have a big counter unit for these in our war elephants but spears are also good. Because of their movement bonuses, he might want to send them through the jungle and our woodsmen axemen will probably only be able to delay them. We might not actually need a spare spear/WE on our side of the jungle but should be ready to have one build if we see them moving our war
Catapults - He still has yet to acquire Construction but this could be on the way. I don't expect them to do anything more than sting us but it still pays to be prepared. Two things needed to counter this threat - 1 Horse Archer, 1 Medic (which we have)
Galleys - Probably our biggest concern. Those coastal routes around Paddyton and MTTT are a nightmare to defend and naval warfare is really very basic - You almost always want to be attacked rather than be the attacker. But even then the odds are not great so we need two boats just in case the other fails. There is also the problem of the barb galley as well but I think we may just have to live with that one hovering around.
The time to build the galley in Paddyton might also be a good reason to allow Peace to continue for more than 10 turns. The galley threat of pillaging the fishing areas is actually not such a serious threat. Workboats are relatively cheap and can be rebuilt and we can always place our own ships on those resources to force an attack. The bigger threat is if he loads up one or two galleys with Keshik and sends them to MTTT. One thing about loaded ships is that they (almost) never attack you so two well placed galleys can perhaps force the troop transporters to take a longer route. With one loaded enemy galley, I would probably try to sink it with a double galley attack.
Freddie
This is the one that I am probably most worried about. He has iron but perhaps not horses. But with iron he can cause us a lot of pain if he invades while we are fighting the Mongols.
Building troops to counter any invasion in Apolyton area would just be too expensive. Without any knowledge of the General's plans, I would guess that we would be reduce to defending the city and allowing a stack to go and pillage the area. The really worst case scenario would be to send a big stack over the border and rush the city but this just doesn't sound like Freddie to me.
To counter the German threat we need to gather whatever information we have on his units and at least be ready with counter units. Apolyton should ideally have a proper defensive unit (archer) although the spear will work well if Freddie were to own Horse Archers. Or - god forbid - War Elephants from our Ivory.
But I think the best way to handle the threat is to try to keep on good terms with him . This is one of the reasons why I would support the Opening of our Borders (and it allows us to acquire more info + might give us a little warning of intent).
And we should offer spicy gifts in future rather than ivory - though I guess that's probably an obvious thing to say.![]()

Damn stupid Mongols. I've just reallised that Beshbalik's location misses out on of those seafood resources.
Kublai Khan is a fool!!!

on the move![]()

Let’s hope it’s enough. But we’s gonna have to wait a long time for that cat to wear down the defences. This looks like a long struggle and our Mongol cities are not going to be happy about it when you add in the time it will take to capture Turfan and remove the cultural threat to Rubygrad lands.
Are our woodsmen planning to raid deep into Mongol lands to cut their roads and keep their other cities in a state of semi-siege. Don’t quite know what the health bonuses are for KK but I can imagine some of the cities will start to struggle with all that jungle and no food resources. That way, we can expect only modest additions to either Turfan’s defences or to threats on our more exposed western flank.
Good luck all and save the elephants for the horses.

The two Task Forces with some details that General Ruby has discussed so far.

Mongol Forces in Beshbalik

Ouch!!

a mere flesh wound![]()

That match up looks a little marginal. The odds for our first attackers look reasonable but with seven decent defenders and only 11 attackers (of which 3 are not really geared up for city assaults) this combat could go either way.
Couple more city raiders or cats maybe?? Or do we have back up that will force the issue in our favour?
It’s nervous for me sitting in my lakeside house eating fresh clams and bananas and awaiting news from the front.![]()

ahh Minister, you should be here
General Ruby has the Task Force Jungle Walkers on their way to assist in Beshbalik, and pillage the roads inbetween on the way while mungles the cat does her business
also there are 1 or 2 extra horse archers on their way

I saw the Horse Archer build too which are OK really. For the job in hand, I might have preferred swords or cats but certainly can understand the desire to get troops up to the front line.Originally posted by Paddy the Scot

Very keen to get supplies of fish in to supplement my menu down here. I’m planning a big celebratory feast when we capture another Mongol capital and our cooks are always keen to try out new fresh ingredients.
Would also be interesting to find out what the Mongol women are like? We didn’t seem to bring too many back from the last campaign and now we see the problems in Rubygrad with their incessant complaining. I always said the thing to do with them was to bring them south and allow the fresher climate to cooler their temper. We never seem to see those problem with the border Germans.

we attack next turn![]()
and more troops have arrived ready to go in![]()

Thank you for the posts Pad.The year is now 800ad, and the Concordian Armed Forces are attacking the Mongol City of Beshbalik.

I hereby submit to the Minister of War a request to promote General Ruby, to Marshal of Concordia.
He continues to impress.
in the recent battle of Beshbalik he did extremely well, and while many units were damaged, weonly lost one, and still took the city![]()
