  • Why is my middle mouse scroll/button not working?

a question for you computer experts out there. Perhaps I disabled some function of my mouse? It seemed to happen when I was using my mouse left handed (not what you think). I was just leaning back in my chair facing right, so it's easier to use my left hand. And it's not like the button itself doesn't work. I can click and hold the middle mouse button and move the screen around as normal. But the scroll wheel doesn't work. I haven't tested it in games, but right now it's just not working in firefox.

damn, doesn't work in itunes. My mouse really isn't that old either. I'm kind of pissed off. You don't miss the feature until it's gone. And I really miss it now.

disregard this thread. I got it working. As usual I blame Bill Gates and Windows.

I went to control panel, hardware, mouse. Not seeing anything useful, I adjusted it so the wheel moves one screen at a time. this work. so then I switched it back so it moves 3 lines at a time. And this works. So maybe windows had a little hiccup. I even restarted my computer to try to get it working, but that didn't work until I messed with the mouse options in control panel.

You may lock this thread mods. You know you get off when you flex those mod powers.

Have you considered taking your mouse apart and cleaning it? Alot of debris (hair etc) gets tangled up in the rollers where you cant reach them when you simply remove the ball and try to clean it that way. First time I took mine all the way apart and cleaned it I was amazed at how much better it worked.

Maybe just the change in pressure from the right hand to the left has caused the difference in how the mouse is responding with the possible buildup.

            Just an idea .

              my mouse is balless.

but the middle mouse scroll button is mechanical. If only I could figure out how to take my mouse apart. It's an optical mouse, and not really designed to be taken apart.

Can't help you with your problem, but while we're on the subject of a middle mouse button not working, why is it that it NEVER works in games? Scroll works in some games, but the button itself never works

Often a game has a tutorial, and in those tutorials at some point they always tell me to press the middle mouse button to do something (often panning the view)... as it never works, I can't get to the more interesting part in the tutorials
This space is empty... or is it?

I have heard that a well tuned ball is actually better than an optical for FPSes

                            Then you heard wrong

                            my mouse is balless.

I cleaned mine awhile ago (same problem as you) and you'd be surprised how much dirt can get in there (works perfect now).
