  • Buying ships & lost production

When one buys a ship on a planet, the next turn, when the ship is built, the progress towards building the next ship starts back at zero.

So... where does the production for first turn go? I assume it doesn't go towards building the ship that was purchased, since that means that the purchase price would vary with your spending allocation sliders. It doesn't appear in the production of the next ship, because that starts at zero. Does one have to pay for this unused production?

Most of the time, losing this production on one of your planets isn't too big a deal--not significant enough to bother micromanaging. But in the beginning when your homeworld is pumping out a colony ship each turn, isn't it best to push your military spending slider to zero? The extra few research and social production are a significant boost early in the game.

Yes, if you buy a ship then your military production for that planet for that turn is wasted. At least in the versions of the game I've seen so far.

If you're buying a ship go into the planetary screen and at the top set the planet to focus on Social (if you still have things being built on the planet) or Research for that turn. No sense wasting time with Military production on the planet that turn since you're buying your ship outright.

You don't have to put the military slider at zero unless that's your only starbase working on a ship that turn, in which case YES, put the slider to zero for your civ and crank up Social. (Since if you only have one starbase it's a safe bet you have developing colonies that are busy building factories and stuff and you can give them a nice boost.
