1944 - Fusion, Genetics next. Global resolution for Free Religion succeeds. My free great scientist (fusion) would help me discover... fascism. So I decide to research that myself (1 turn) and see what he can do after that.

1945 - Fascism discovered, Genetics next. GS gives me 1698 beakers towards genetics (I'm producing exactly 1700/turn, so he saved me a turn).

1946 - Lizzy builds her first SS part.

1947 - Great scientist born. +2550 beakers toward genetics (why so much more than the other guy?)

    -Arrian
Arrian, Fusion gives you a free Great Engineer not a Great Scientist. Great Scientists are worth more than other specialists when cashed in for tech. Hence the difference in beaker values between your two "Great Scientists".

Really? Wow, I must've been getting tired if I mistook at GE for a GS.

        War and Diplomacy

1941 A.D.-- West Point is completed in Philadelphia, and I start building some naval ships, including a carrier, from that city. New York, one of my major military production cities, has a mere 5 turns before completing the Pentagon as well. I'm in a pretty good position to press my advantage in a late game military push. First on the chopping block? Bismarck.

With that in mind, I dial up Genghis and trade him a couple techs to stop trading with Bismarck. I didn't want Bismarck to have an open border policy that he could just march his troops through to reach my Northwestern borders. At the same time, it lets me hit him at will from within Genghis' territory, an ability that will be very useful!

I also start to shift military units toward my eastern territory. If I'm to really press my advantage here, I'll have to start my attack soon, before Bismarck can arrive at his Panzer UU. However, it looks like he still, by and large, is only working with riflemen and is not yet near Industrialization, so it's quite likely he'll never even reach his UU at all.

1942 A.D. -- The Open Border agreement with Bismarck is cancelled, sending his attitude with me directly to Annoyed. If he think's he is annoyed now, just wait a couple turns!

1944 A.D. -- Rocketry is discovered and I start on Radio to try and field bombers in the near-term. Production has been almost entirely focused toward military across the nation and my troops have by and large reached their positions to start an attack on Bismarck. The assault will begin in the next year.

My main goal, in the early war, is to capture Cordoba and then shift the main assault to Munich, outside of which lay an iron source for Bismarck. More importantly, his only oil source sits between those two cities, more or less, and I should be able to lay claim to it if they fall to my hand. Berlin, his capitol and likely a very well defended city, will then be able to have the full focus of my forces. In my territory some light reserves, mostly cavalry, remain to counter any forces he may send in. I suspect he'll bottle up pretty quickly, after an initial attempt to stop my assault. Frankly, I think I'll have him overwhelmed both in number and in technological force and will only meet light resistance in the field or at home.

1945 A.D. -- The Pentagon is complete. War is declared on Bismarck and my forces marshall into his territory. Bismarck lands some cavalry and seige weapons outside Seville, but they don't stand long and are hit with combined infantry and tank reserve forces, driving them from American soil.

1946 A.D. -- Cordoba falls back into American hands after a brief battle and the assault of several SEAL teams into the city. My first fighters, moved into position along the German-American borders, strike out at Bismarck's navy even as the first American battleship moves in to threaten the region. Troops begin to shift toward Munich as SEAL's secure Cordoba against German counter attack.

1948 A.D. -- Broadway is completed in Saxon, which should help firm up my culture against surrounding Mongol cities. I make a few trades with Genghis and Hatty (though Genghis won't be happy about that), in order to help finance the current war against Bismarck.

1949 A.D. -- I move up my culture slider to 20% in order to help safeguard captured cities against revolt and to solidify or expand my current borders against both Genghis and Bismarck, if possible.

1951 A.D. -- Troops are in position to begin an assault on Munich, which has been receiving coastal fire from the recently arrived battleship. Cannon fire unleashes on the city, followed up by tank forces moving in to eliminate the major defenders ... machine gunners. Munich falls as second line forces finish the attack.

1952 A.D. -- St. Thomas Aquinas is born and moves to Washington to settle into as his new home. Research on Radio is but a turn away, and production of bombers to follow.

Fighters, dispatched to base out of recently captured Cordoba, begin to wear down the defenses of Berlin in antipication of its future assault. Meanwhile, German frigates are easily sunk in the north sea by American battleship power.

1953 A.D. -- Berlin is surrounded and will remain a German possession only with extreme luck. Bombers begin production in various cities around America, furthering the doom that now looms over Germany. In response, Germany makes a strong but fruitless counter attack against a weaker force arrayed outside its walls.

1954 A.D. -- German Reinforcements move toward Berlin and are eliminated by SEAL teams before they can move in to support defenders. This did cause a delay in the full attack on Berlin, leaving a handful of defenders to remain in its cause.

1955 A.D. -- Berlin falls. Reinforcements arrive at Cordoba, freeing up the SEAL teams there to continue the American attack on Germany. Units around Berlin regroup and repair in anticipation of further action, but Germany stands very weak and offers no resistance.

Despite the grand successes, American people already protest the ongoing war. I assure them that Germany is part of some evil axis, and mutter a thing or two about a "crossroads of freedom" and that seems to quiet them, for the moment. I also dial the culture bar up to 30%.

1957 A.D. -- Forces move in to assault the cities of Cologne and Hamburg. After that, only the city of Kufah, once under the control of Saladin, remain for American forces to capture. Likely I will simply raze that city due to its location and the likelyhood that it will be surrounded by already existing and strong culture from rivals.

1958 A.D. -- Streams of the first built American bombers level defenses in Hamburg, alongside additional fighter support which attacks both defense and troop alike. This air assault is quickly followed up by tanks rolling into the city who take control of it. Even as Hamburg falls, artillery begins to hammer Cologne and additional forces manuever into range.

1959 A.D. -- Artillery and bombers pulverize defenses and defender alike in Cologne. Tanks begin the attack on land, finished with a pair of SEAL teams who destroy the remaining and feeble defenders. Frankfurt, a German city located on an island to the east is discovered, and will likely remain in German hands as I'll try to sue for peace once Kufah has been razed.

1962 to 1963 A.D. -- Kufah is razed and peace made with Bismarck. Research is shifted to Mass Media with the thought that a quick diplomatic victory may just be in hand. It looks unlikely that Genghis has enough population to end up becoming a competitor in the vote, and I anticipate that between he and I, there should be enough votes to secure the 60% needed for me to win. I already had this in the back of my mind as I continued the war and had set many cities to produce hospitals and other various buildings to increase health and ideally boost population nation-wide.

Cologne may be unlikely to stand as an American city, given the strong and long established culture from Hatty and Genghis that already engulf it. I'll wait two turns to see what it looks like before considering to gift it to someone or not.

        |

1965 A.D. -- Narak, yet another Great Prophet, is born and sent to join Hamburg. Normally, I'd just send a GP like him to Washington at this point, to glean a bit more cash from a city that will likely receive Wall Street soon enough. However, I'd like to get just a little more production in Hamburg so I can more rapidly get buildings up that will help it improve population, as it looks as though it may be able to nearly double in size fairly rapidly if I can get it well under control.

1966 A.D. -- The United Nations is begun in Boston, with some 15 turns before it is finished. Cologne does look to be in trouble, culture wise, and as a result I gift it to Genghis--I'd rather he receive the city than Hatty since I'll be counting on his votes before long.

Unfortunately, when I went to give him the city, it appears he is no longer "Friendly", but only "Pleased". I'll have to butter him up over the coming turns to make sure he swings his vote my way. Having said that, I have several techs to offer him, among various resources, so hopefully I can convince him to see things my way.

1970 A.D. -- I've switched to the Environmentalism civic so all my cities have that much more room to grow. Many have been refocused primarily on food/growth and the UN has a mere 12 turns before completion. I currently have 47% of the world population; if I can eek out just 3-5% more, I'm almost certain that Genghis will have the remainder necessary.

1972 A.D. -- The Eiffel Tower is built, which should help to firm my lacking culture. I'd also discovered Facism some turns back and, to make sure that Genghis and I are best of buddies, I may switch to Police State shortly; his favorite civic.

1975 A.D. -- With 7 turns left until the UN is built, I decide I should switch to Police State now. I've been giving Genghis a variety of resources, a couple techs here or there, and generally telling him how wonderful he is but it doesn't seem to be enough to make him "friendly".

1981 A.D. -- I'm +14 with Genghis, receiving only a slight boost from being in Police State, at least so far. After all that I've been doing to try and improve relations with him, I just can't believe he isn't on friendly terms yet. I can't even establish a defensive pact with him, suprisingly, which I'm sure would clinch it for me. I'll keep trying!

1984 A.D. -- The U.N. has been built. I'm still scratching my head as to what the problem with Genghis may be and I have doubts that he'll do anything but abstain for a diplo victory vote for me. Grrr! He better come to his senses over there!

1985 A.D. -- I've literally given him every tech I have, every available resource, switched civic's to favor him and cash to boot, not to mention the city of Cologne and now the city of Old Sarai (a city of his that flipped to me due to culture). Still, just Pleased. It's pretty ridiculous actually. Among the resources are Uranium and Oil, neither of which he had for himself. Just what the heck does he want?!!?

1987 A.D. -- The first vote comes up, between Elizabeth and myself. I'm pretty sure I'll get the seat but the diplo victory is anything but certain. If it come down to it, I may just have to invade Genghis to secure it!

1988 A.D. -- Genghis voted for me, naturally, with 90 votes. The others combined have 229 votes against Genghis' and my 379, but again, without Genghis there is no way I can get a diplo victory right now. The one thing in my favor is that I hold enough votes to make the UN position certain for me, even without Genghis on my side. That means, if necessary, I can attack him and pull this off. It may just come down to that! We'll see shortly.

1989 A.D. -- In anticipation of a possible invasion of Mongol land, I start to produce some additional units. A quick comparison on the power graphs reveal that American military might is vastly superior to anyone else in the game, easily twice that of anyone else, with only England providing any potential sport to the matter. Genghis, for one, should be fairly easy to roll over.

1991 A.D. -- Okay, this is going to pretty much determine if Genghis get's banged out or not. The vote is up for the diplo victory, and 383 votes are required. I've had a bit more growth, population wise, that I think we may clear it IF, that is, Genghis votes my way. If not, I'll be forced to invade and finish this off. I'll break our open border agreement and start an invasion the second it comes back without his vote.

1992 A.D. -- That's all she wrote folks! Genghis got wise and threw me his vote. Little did he know the great threat that loomed over his people!

        Looking Back:

Honestly, I haven't played Financial civ/leaders too much though it was easy to see the power of it in this game. Even still, I wish I had focused a bit more on early expansion, I didn't really feel like I had established enough cities by the late Classical but it worked out well enough in the end.

If I were to play it again, I'd probably go a bit more toward military aggression sooner rather than later, though I didn't really feel like I had such a tech lead until we started into the Industrial, which really helps to cut short invasions and prevent becoming mired down in long wars and engagements. Washington's combo Fin/Org could really be seen through all of this, as I never had to dip below 90% (even if I did occasionally), whatever my tech/culture settings may have been, and this with quite an expansive nation and a massive population alongside expensive civic's (Police State, Environmentalism, etc.) to boot. I'll probably be playing Washington again in the near future, to get an even better feel for him and America.

I also wish I had taken a little better control over the Great People that I was producing, as I could've likely come up with a bit more useful types--many, if not most, were prophets, and I never generated a vast amount of them in total in any case. Even still, an occasional engineer would have been nice, as well as perhaps a small number of great artists to help in quickly subduing a captured city and making sure it didn't flip to a rival civ.

All in all, it came out fairly well. I really wasn't sure that Genghis was going to vote for me in the end and I thought, worst case, it might take me 20-25 more turns to capture enough of his cities to put a close to the game. Still, if I had been a bit more aggressive it's likely I could have shaved at least a solid 30-40 turns off this win, resulting in that much higher of a score. Fun game though and I hope you enjoyed this DAR!

I suppose I should write something to finalize this. I ended up not actually finishing the game as it was a foregone conclusion I was going to win somehow. I appear to have lost my notes which was why I hadn't posted anything after DAR3.

Anyway, when I ended it (on prince level), I had just gotten to the modern era. I had the largest empire, the largest and fully advanced military, was some 12 techs ahead of my closest competitor, had the best research of anyone (still able to research at 90% science and break even on gold production), and was some 1,000 points ahead of my closest competitor scorewise.

Isabella had finally attacked me, while I had low military, so I switched over to full military production, pulled in some allies (Genghis and Bismarck) and proceeded to trash her. Catapults and then cannons are very powerful. After that I was essentially just playing it out as no one could catch me and I was getting tired of it. I was headed toward the space race victory, but I could have easily won by points if I wanted to, or effected a good conquest or domination victory if I'd had the time. I just don't have the time or inclination to play out a certain win.

I suppose I need to try monarch now. I hear it has a pretty big jump from prince so I expect I won't do quite as well on it...which will keep my interest longer than totally blowing out the AI.

Looking forward to the next game.

            Artuero DAR 7: Noble

DAR 7: Artuero’s Americans in the Modern Era (1884-1980).

Recap: After three wars with the Mongols, the Americans are finally on the verge of wiping out their belligerent neighbors to the North, having captured or razed all but one Mongolian city. With America’s stone-age conquest of Spain’s sole city the bulk of the central part of the continent belongs to America. To the south, Arabia has a small, lonely outpost in the tundra. West of Washington Germany has a small city taken from its barbarian owners, and a bit to the north there is an Egyptian colony. But by and large America is in control of its region.

In the meantime, Germany has built up a sizable empire in the Eastern portion of the continent and has eclipsed Hatshepsut in score. Bismark regards Artuero cautiously, while Saladin is annoyed with him. England and Egypt are generally friendly or at least pleased with the Americans, who lead the world in tech but not by a huge amount.

America continues to have a small military but it does have a significant (6-7) component of veteran cavalry units as a result of its ongoing war with Mongolia.

            Report:

1892: America finally eliminates its three-time enemy Mongolia by taking Beshbalik, Khan’s sole remaining city. America loses some units in the attack, including a level five cannon, but the victory brings peace, and peace brings happiness across the empire.

Unfortunately, immediately after we managed to control post-victory rioting in Karakorum, the Karakorumites rebelled again seeking to join Arabia. Beshbalik is also in revolt owing to the American’s recent victory.

1898: Tech trading backfills some missing techs for America. America has all techs known by any other nation and has sole possession of electricity. No one besides Artuero and Elizabeth knows Assembly Line either, but otherwise all available techs are known to three or more countries and it appears that no remaining civilization is terribly far behind.

1898: Artuero also signs his first defensive pact, with Elizabeth. This may have a deterrence effect as I continue to avoid building military units that are soon to be outdated. Of course it could draw me into war—and Elizabeth’s location is such that she will not be much actual help. Hatshepsut is mildly bothered by this alliance and drops to pleased with me. America has yet to build a warship of any kind but it does not appear very important in this instance.

1902: Shankara born in Madrid. He immediately constructs the Dai Miao.

1912: America builds the Kremlin and begins to slow research in order to accumulate gold to spend on city buildings.

1920: Philadelphia constructs the Eiffel tower.

1922: Americans discover genetics which significantly helps unhealthiness limitations on its cities. Also, Broadway opens in Madrid, improving cultural output and keeping alive the possibility of a culture win. Unfortunately, Beshbalik is now in revolt, its citizens seeking to join the Arabian empire.

1924: Boston completes the Pentagon, and Rock N’ Roll is invented in Angle. Will Wonders never cease?

1930: Karakorum revolts again and this time actually joins the Arabian empire. The biggest problem for this is that we lose access to marble but at this point it probably is not too important. All spare troops are ordered to Beshbalik to try to hold that city from doing the same thing.

1934: We purchase the 3 Gorges Dam in Washington. The Kremlin has allowed us to rapidly develop our cities; 3 gorges will help considerably as well.

1943: Hollywood constructed in Madrid. Madrid is lagging my other two designated culture cities so it is going to get hermitage et al. It is embarrassing but 1943 was also the first year we saw a national wonder built, the Heroic Epic in the coastal city of New Sarai. I will add West Point there and hopefully grow the city more. It is only size 9 but for its size has a high hammer output, lots of hills and forests, and a port which will enable me to build upgraded battleships if the need arises. New York begins the UN. A number of other national wonders are in the works. James Watt was born this year. A big year for the Americans after a significant lull. I plan to keep Watt to hurry a wonder of importance somewhere down the road. There are not that many left, however.

1944: I took some time to look around the map. It looks like there is no aluminum for me, which may turn out to be a problem. I also note that Elizabeth has a couple of techs that I don’t, and managed to found a little city in my area. I could attack Saladin for aluminum. I am, however, a bit worried about Elizabeth’s ability to win via space race while I am still going for a cultural victory. Thus I will have to consider turning up the capabilities to do an overseas invasion. Failing that, a set of spies might do the trick.

1947: Invented Genetics, giving me some breathing room in a number of cities.

1950: 100 turns left. Constructed Wall Street in Washington.

1952: I purchased the U.N. in New York and finished West Point in New Sarai.

1953: Created my first SEAL. Not sure why but figured I might as well. I do not have too much before I can start making modern armor and mechanized infantry and I prefer a smaller more advanced military to the many units that would be necessary with SEAL attacks. Also I am addicted to mobility in the field—it’s a problem because there are no land-based siege weapons that move quickly.

1955: The first U.N. election occurs, between me and Bismarck. Results are in in 1956 and it looks like I have some friends. I won easily with Hatshepsut’s and Elizabeth’s votes. Saladin and Bismarck voted against me. Uhoh, Bismarck completed the Apollo Program. I may need to go to war sooner than I thought and against Bismarck rather than Elizabeth.

1957: I use Watt to speed the Space Elevator in Angle. Hatshepsut is willing to part with Aluminum so we are okay on that front should the requirement arise, at least for ten turns. I traded all three of the entertainment resources for it.

1959: Kobo-Daishi was born. He can, surprisingly, still create my seventh and final shrine, the Church of the Nativity in Boston.

1960: We research rocketry. I had put my science rate back up to 90% because I found that I was accumulating too much cash and didn’t have too much to do with it. I constructed the Forbidden Palace in Turfan which is about the middle of the continent. I did not win the UN election because Hatshepsut abstained. St. Augustine named the Americans the most advanced civilization of the world. Elizabeth, Hashepsut, Bismark and Saladin finished it out in that order.

At this time we upgraded most of our garrison (including spearmen, macemen and longbowmen) to mechanized infantry.

1962: We construct the Space Elevator in Angle, just in case we need to go that route.

1963: We discovered satellites and can now see the world. Does not look like we missed that much by not building a navy. Oh and Resolution 104- Single Currency – passes.

1965: We train our first naval unit. A submarine built for spy purposes. Our first spy is likewise built in Boston and sent to the English Island.

1967: We discover composites, and build SDI, just in case.

1968: Global free speech adopted. My spies make it to the capitals of Saladin, Bismarck and Elizabeth. For some reason I cannot destroy Bismarck’s production of SS casing in Berlin using my spy. Bismarck is doing a lot of constructing and I may have to declare war or go space race myself. I haven’t won this way either as I typically disable it.

1969: St. Thomas Acquinas is born in Madrid. Is he a scientist or a prophet? Prophet. I convinced Hatshepsut to declare war on Saladin, just to keep them busy in case I have to invade Germany. Elizabeth would have done it but wanted far too much in exchange for it. I’d love for Bismark to go to war but it is looking like I am going to have to do that myself for no one would even consider fighting him (and he wasn’t interested either).

1971: Hatshepsut takes Baghdad from Arabia.

1972: I am again elected easily, with Hatshepsut and Elizabeth voting for me.

1975: We complete the Apollo Program and build a bunch of airports. Somehow I had forgotten to research flight until recently. Talk about a backwards development. Space Elevator built before the Apollo Program, which completes at the same time we create our first airports. The Egyptians took and destroyed Karakorum which is too bad as my culture would have quickly subsumed it. However, it does give me a certain amount of more resources and I could send in a settler if I wanted to get the aluminum.

1976: We adopt open markets giving trade with all foreign cities. Only Bismarck disputed it. I think I am at a crossroads to decide whether to go for space victory or try to get the culture win. If I am going space, I need to focus on producing the parts. The more fun route is to stick with culture (which I will get if I can stick it out until 2030 or so, faster if I use the culture slider and have the cities produce culture). But of course then I would have to go to war against Bismarck to make sure he doesn’t get to Alpha Centauri before my cities are legendary.

1977: I renewed my trade with Hatshepsut for aluminum. She got even more than the three entertainment resources this time.

1978: I obsolete the Kremlin and learn Fiber Optics. We found Atlanta more or less near where Karakorum used to be. Hat won’t like that but I need the aluminum.

1980: Well what do you know, I won a diplomatic victory. Hatshepsut and Elizabeth apparently liked me enough this time around—I got 428 where 373 of 603 was required.

Artuero DAR 7: Noble (End Summary)

This is a summary of statistics and so forth at the end of my game:

Summary of Artuero’s Noble AU 100A game:

Time spent: 23 hours, 11 minutes (this is probably an overstatement as sometimes I leave the game on overnight). I ended up number one in all demographics except I was number 2 in soldiers and number 2 in approval rate.

Top Cities: 27 Pop Washington, Madrid (24) and Angle (20) were the top three in the world (Egypt had 4 and 5, Thebes and Heliopolis). The Taj Mahal was the last wonder I lost out on (to Arabia).

Number one unit I killed—Keshik (30). Number one of mine killed: Spearmen (6). Most built? Worker, with 13 (net captured 3). Next was a Christian Missionary (12) and then a bunch of other missionaries. Cavalry was the most built war unit—7. Guess I never did much modern-unit building. Next highest was spearman (5).

Most built buildings were things that produce culture—walls, castle, theatre, university and library. I had one in each city.

My score was 9528 and I displayed the abilities of Shaka Zulu! Regular scores were as follows:

              Me: 4644
              Elizabeth: 2893
              Hatshepsut: 2861
              Bismarck: 2737
              Saladin: 1894
              Isabella and Ghengis Khan: 0

I had 32.5% of the world’s population, and 38.16% of its land area. Bismarck had 22% of population and Hatshepsut had 18% of land area.

My three culture cities were all around 30,000. I would have achieved cultural victory if I could have held out against the space race. Bismarck had completed 5 casings though. My final civics were all the top ones except for free market economy. If I had thought about it I probably would have switched that to either environmentalism (somewhat unnecessary though) or state property.

Buddhism was the most influential religion worldwide (22%). Hinduism was second, with 19%-- interestingly Hinduism never spread much in my own empire. Christianity was a close third (18%).

I finished with 11 towns, only 5 of them settled by me. I also had four from the Mongols one Spanish and one barbarian. My big three cities were my capital, Isabella’s former capital, and the barbarian town I captured.

I am satisfied with the diplomatic victory. It certainly solved my issue with needing to beat Bismarck. Also, I did not have to bend over backwards to get either of my allies to like me.

Biggest mistake was not exploiting my ownership of all seven religions. It wasn't until the end of the game that I started making missionaries, and I never properly spread the religions or made use of them through civics.

Best thing I did was really luck-- coming accross Isabella very early and getting my City Raider II promoted warrior to her doorstep with only one defender. Odds were against me on the fight but they succeeded.

This course taught me the value of pop-rushing, which I will surely use right now. I doubt there will be such high food starts with any regularity however. I am sure it taught me other things as well but I found this to be a particularly good lesson for slavery.

1772AD I’m scurrying around working on oil wells. My upgrades to infantry came soon enough to avert disaster. Hamburg was taken by a culture flip to Asoka, while Toledo was taken by force. Capac has arrived finally with his tanks to save the day. The great prophet Kobo-Daishi is born in the Buddhist holy city of Madrid. I'm sending him down to the Confucian holy city Cumae to build the Kong Miao.

1804AD Waiting for my tanks to roll off the line, my cavalry decided to have a pillaging party around Hamburg. What a bunch of cowboys they are!

1870AD Delhi has been captured along with eight world wonders! The Sistene Chapel, Notre Dame, Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, among them. Who says I can’t build wonders? Indian resistance is now futile, as I sweep through the remaining Eastern cities.

1880AD The sweep of the Indian subcontinent is complete. My empire is 63% of the total landmass, only one percent short of domination. The problem is now that my population is woefully short of the goal, which is now set at 72%. I have 51% and Capac has 47%. So, my worst fears are now realized. I have to go to war with Capac, whose army is twice the size of mine, and more advanced.

1955AD The war to end all wars has begun. I built my military to the strength of Capac’s over a period of 75 years, developing a modern airforce to protect all border cities, especially the front line. My navy is sufficient, though not as powerful as Capac’s. My army will do the heavy lifting of taking five or six of Capac’s big cities away to get my population over the domination threshold. Capac’s capital Cuzco is size 29. Wow!

Rather than enter his space at the beginning of the war, I chose to declare war and wait for him to make the first move. As expected, he went for pillaging my improvements, but my airforce was ready, and my stealth bombers helped target carrier stacks to allow my navy to clean up. Inevitably, some bombers and ships were lost. Pillaging takes it’s toll too, but my defensive air victories and naval battle wins helped reduce his advantage, which I didn't want to face all at once in enemy territory.

1961AD Six years into the war, after the edge was taken off of his airforce, navy, and some border skirmishes had taken the edge off some of his land forces, I made my move. Keeping stacks to around five or six mixed units, I pushed in a single row formation inward toward three of Capac’s cities, Chicago, New York, and Atlanta. The main thing is not to allow a large stack to be taken out by his artillery, which he will gladly do if he sees the opportunity.

Here, I have just captured Chicago, and head toward New York and Atlanta. If I take Atlanta and then head South West to Machu Picchu, I will have effectively split his empire in two, though the cultural borders would take 10 turns to close in. I can’t raze the cities either, because it’s the population that I need.

1965AD New York and Atlanta have been captured. Taking a rest to heal my troops, and then starting South toward Tiawanaku, South West to Machu Picchu, and West to Philadelphia.

1970AD Tiawanaku, Machu Picchu, and Philadelphia are mine, putting my population up to 63%, over the now 60% level required, while land area is 68%. My troops are on the doorstep of Saxon and Ica, but it looks like they won’t be needed. I offered peace with Capac. He thought about it a while and finally agreed.

1971AD Domination Victory! Awarded the title of Augustus Caesar by Julius Caesar himself (22,946). I built a total of three cities and two workers!

                  The Roman empire.

The power graph. It took 75 years to build an army to take on Capac. Diplomacy has it’s rewards, and Capac’s generosity was not forgotten, as I spared him in the end, though with a smaller empire than he would have preferred.

                  Some other stats.

Some things I might have done differently:

                  - Not pursue military tradition, go directly for industrialism. Or, if MT path is taken, shorten the war to just the key cities. But I do like cavalry, so I’d probably do it all over again.

                  - Be more careful about annoying my neighbors like Asoka who have tanks before I do.

The final part is just a beeline to robotics for Space Elevator, and then a mop up of all the SS techs, though I took fission (needed for fusion anyway) early to get some nuclear plants.

The Elevator was slow with no aluminium, so I went for fusion early and finished it with the engineer. I made a belated effort to gift enough tech to people so I could trade for aluminium, but I was much too late as I didn't realise you had to wait for successive turns to trade successive techs. However, given the nature of the tech tree (with 2 resource free space parts last) you are always going to be largely constrained by tech and the productive power of your best production city.

In the event, not having aluminium cost me only two turns (it was still a mistake not to gift earlier), and I set course for Alpha Centauri in 1884. If only this were 1.09, I think I might have broken 1850.

                      Next time.

                            DAR Record, links work:

1908 A.D. Flight is done and brings me to tha Modern Age, onto Radio for bombers

1912 A.D. War has been declared on Saladin. Why? Because he's green, that's why, booo green. Elephatine is razed, sorry Hatty no free city for you. Troops move towards Saladin's core cities.

1914 A.D. Saladin captures Beshbalik. I retake Beshbalik.

1916 A.D. Saladin captures Karakorum. I retake Karakorum. Hehe. You can see in the screenshot that because of the borders, Saladin can reach my cities whenever he wants but I have to crawl along at 1 move per square.

1920 A.D. I take Najarn. Lost a bunch of units to a big Arabian army. Still takes awhile for reinforcements to come, but I should still easily kill Saladin in due time.

1921 A.D. Radio done, onto Rocketry (5 turns)

1923 A.D. Baghdad is taken. 4 more Arabian cities left, 3 on this continent, one way the heck over on a small island. Ugh this is why I hate maps with small islands, itís so hard to finish anyone off. Saladinís army is pretty much scarp metal, just mop up on these 3 cities, making a few bombers if they come in, theyíll be real easy.

1925 A.D. Captured Medina. Didn't even bring artillery, that's what tanks with barrage are for. Lost the first tank but no big deal, trying to do this as fast as possible.

1926 A.D. Saladin strikes back by landing some troops in my core cities. I have a bomber do a run on them then recall 2 tanks that were enroute to reinforce my army, I doubt they'll capture anything, probably raze some improvements, no big deal. Rocketry finished, now onto Biology. (3 turns)

1927 A.D. Damascus taken. Mecca is nearby, shouldn't take long to take it out, I have 3 bombers up in that area now, bombers make it sooo much easier. Saladin's landing force is completely destroyed, units are healing then moving to the front.

1929 A.D. Mecca is taken. Actually thereís two more Arabian cities left, one small one in the middle of Hatty's territory I will just raze that for her real quick.

1932 A.D. Heliopis is taken and peace is made with Saladin. I also see we have 98 turns left. Errrr so the game ends in 2030 A.D.? Huh, it's supposed to end in 2050 A.D. I think the patch changed the number of turns so my dates are a little bit off. Oh well, Bismarck has finished the Apollo Program and has built 1 casing. I was going to take out Hatty and maybe that would give me enough landmass for a domination victory, but instead I'll build a bit more and take out Bismarck just to make sure he knows who is top dog around here.

1933 A.D. Mass Media is finished (dunno why I researched that) next is Artillery (4 turns) A great Engineer is born in Philadelphia. Washington has switched to making the Eiffel Tower, and the Great Engineer will help out.

1936 A.D. Eiffel Tower is complete, back to making Tanks. I would like another set of bombers so I can attack Bismarck in two places at once so Iíll wait for a few new bombers then commence, Bismarck is still on Spaceship Casings so thereís no real rush.

1937 A.D. Artillery done, now working on Plastics (6 turns)

1940 A.D. War with Bismarck. My main force consists of tanks and bombers and a few marines to the north and a mix bag of tanks, marines, SAM inf and infantry to the south along with a large bomber squadron. Bismarck has SAM infantry, but not enough to counter my mass of bombers.

1941 A.D. I take Toledo to the south and Frankfurt in the North. Used just tanks and bombers, rest of my army is taking out the troops Bismarck sent to counter my invasion, Bismarckís main force is moving north to counter my larger army there, this two pronged attack should pick him apart very fast. We are now at 45.22% population and 49.72% landmass to win we need 45% pop and 64% landmass. Taking all of Bismarckís land should do it, but if thatís not enough, Hatty has land we can easily take after Bismarck is dead.

1942 A.D. Hatty cancels her deals with me. Ehhh, Hatty has been friends with Bismarck since the Ancient Era, guess I shouldíve seen this coming. Wonít be long before Hatty attacks me, I barely have anything along Hattyís border, I am sending all reinforcements there, Hatty canít have much military, I should be able to easily repel her if she attacks.

1944 A.D. Hamburg had 2 Panzers in it. Now Hamburg has no Panzers in it, it has my tanks in it, mwahaha. Currently at 52.08% landmass.

1945 A.D. Munich is taken in the south. There was a lone panzer that was tough to kill, had to bomb it to 50% hp then attack it with a SAM infantry and even then had about a 75% of winning. Panzers are nasty and I have barely any gunships, but Bismarck should be dead before he can build many more.

1948 A.D. Cologne is taken. Also I took out the last Izzy city, it was a training facility for my tank but meh I need the land mass. Currently at 56.90% landmass, getting close.

1949 A.D. I take Berlin and wipe out every last Bismarck unit on the main continent. I ask Bismarck and he gives me basically everything for peace including Liberalism, his map, all his gold and all of his gold per turn, mwahaha. Next target is Hatty I guess, still at 58.25% landmass. If I just hit end turn and convert all this empty land I bet I could get the 64% I need, but thatís no fun, letís kill Hatty anyways, gotta teach these AI punks a lesson. 81 turns left. Oh yeah we finished Plastics and onto Composites (7 turns) not like that really matters, but hey.

1955 A.D. I declare war on Hatty and take Byblos in one turn, Hatty doesnít even know what is going on. This is going to be a massacre. Currently at 61.62% landmass.

1956 A.D. Composites done, now on to Communism (2 turns) Hatty has a cute little stack next to one of my cities, awwwww. My 7 bombers chuckle as they reduce it to 50% and then a mass of units feast on the free exp.

1957 A.D. WE WIN! Yay, all of the American little boys and girls have had their fill of killing heathens (and brothers and sisters of the faith) and now relax as we have dominated the entire planet.

Our kill screen is impressive, 73 cavalry killed, 58 riflemen, 42 infantry, 33 catapults and more. We lost 19 Grenadiers, 18 infantry, 18 cannons, and 13 tanks. We get a score of 20383 and the rank of Augustus Caesar.

I read somewhere in the mass of one AU post that DeepO said that since this game was saved weirdly that the AI didn't recieve it's inital bonuses properly. This makes me mad because then it wasn't a true Emperor game, on Emperor the AI gets 2 scouts, 2 archers, a worker, and the Archery tech for free. I think the AI also gets another free ancient era tech and some free hammers but I don't remember exactly. Liberalism in 1480? What, usually it is done by 1140 in my Emperor games. Late Pyramids, late Great Library, late Hanging Gardens, I got a few early wonders way too easily. I played so slowly and didn't attack as aggressively as I should have because well I know how tough Emperor is and expected an Emperor style difficult game, if I knew it was going to be easy like this I would've attack much sooner.

At least we get to compare starts and tech paths, but other than that, all our stuff on high difficulties Monarch+ is junk because the AI doesn't get it's starting bonuses, it's all in the starting bonuses.

                              DAR 6

1862: Woah—in the list of the most powerful civs, I am dead last. I hope not too many notice, or at least not until I’ve managed to get the Internet to beef up my military tech .

I decided to pay cash to rush the Oxford University, to be sure that I get it installed in Washington. Goodbye 560 gold! Hello 500+ research. Rawr.

1666: Hrmm, I guess it’s only 402 research. Oh well.

I’m thinking about going for a diplomatic victory, since I’ve never done that before. Everyone on the board is Pleased with me except Elizabeth, and she is friendly. It seems to me that just before the UN vote to declare me the winner, I could give a free tech to each person, then coast to victory! We’ll see. Still want to do the Internet gamble I’m doing atm.

1874: Wall Street finally finishes in San Fran. Work begins on a Globe Theater. Elizabeth finishes the Kremlin—I’m apparently not the only one working on wonders.

1876: Computers discovered. It sure is weird to have computers, and still not have the ability to make a simple railroad! This allows armor, except that I don’t have the ability to create an oil well for oil, I don’t have Composites, and I can’t even see the location of Alluminum! Nevertheless, I can move on in my quest for the Internet. Next up? Lowly steel, in two turns hehe.

1880: Steel is done. Now I can finally upgrade those catapults to Cannon. This also gives me Ironworks, which will go in my best production city, New York. Next up? Artillery. Part of me is glad that the path to the Internet is picking up a few of the military techs. I can spend my time upgrading what I have to be better prepared for any surprise attacks.

Washington produces another great scientist. I decide to make a third academy, in Korak, with 74 existing science.

1884: I can see my opponents have infantry, tech that I don’t have in this mad grab for the Internet. Must keep relations good…. I’ll give away tech if I have to.

1886: Artillery done! This catapults are so yesterday! Three more techs before I can start building the Internet. Next up is Rocketry in five turns.

1890: I decide to build the Ironworks in Yue-Chi. It has 61 hammers vs. New York’s 63, but is still growing. Also, New York is in the middle of a long wonder construction (The Eiffel Tower) and I want to get the Ironworks started.

1896: Elizabeth beats me to the Statue of Liberty. Americans everywhere weep. At least the cash generated from that loss will be substantial.
1898: Rocketry is done, and with it several upgrades I can’t use because of missing earlier techs, heh. SAM Infantry is the only one I can do. Meanwhile, work starts on Satellites, in 5 turns. There is no stopping me.

The Globe Theater finishes in San Fran. Work begins on a lab to celebrate. I get just over 1000 gold from the failed Statue of Liberty, and spend some of the money on some upgrades to my units.

1900: Another Great Artist, and another culture bomb for my newer cities. Ning-hsia regains a copper mine next to him that was culturally taken by Egypt.

1902: New York Finishes the Eiffel Tower. Like Stonehenge from the beginning of the game, now I don’t have to build a radio tower in every single city I own—that’s a nice little bonus, and saves a lot of labor.

1908: Satellites are done. Fiber Optics is the last tech, and I can build the Internet!

I’ve been spending my peaceful time taking my worker army and going from city to city, making sure every tile has an improvement on it. Once this is finished (I’m almost done), I’ll take a few back through city by city and adjust cities that are close to 49 bread to make them exactly 49. This is the bread necessary to work every tile. After I have done Fiber Optics, I will research Railroad next, to give the majority of my workers something to do—I will automate them on trade routes, which should make my roads railroads in a hurry.

Washington will be the exception. With 27 population and 60 bread fully worked, this is my specialist city. It still has room to grow to 29 without penalty, and with 29 population will have 11 specialists with one tile not worked (to keep growth stagnant).

1918: Fiber Optics finished. I will construct the Internet in Yue-Chi, where the Ironworks is due to finish in two turns. Research starts on Railroad, to give my workers something to do. After this, we will only work on tech that is as advanced on the paths as possible given my deficiencies, to make the most use of the Internet wonder. Everyone is pleased with me, and one is friendly. I’m going to go for a Diplomatic victory, and do the Space Race in my spare time with cities not doing anything else.

1922: Started the Internet. 19 turns to glory!

1923: Railroad is done, and the workers are getting to work. Mass Media is up next, as the most advanced tech I could find without having to do some of my older missed techs. I need it anyway to start the United Nations and shoot for a diplomatic victory.

1925: The mass of workers spreading in every direction with railroads looks great! It’s like a virus spreading through a amoeba.

1926: Mass Media has been researched. Looking for more late era techs, Refrigeration is next, in three turns, but I drop my tech to 50% to make it five. I bump up culture to 20%. I’m hoping I can score one of Isabella’s two cities that are struggling to keep their tiles next to me. Next up is Genetics, far at the end of the tech tree where I’m at, so certainly won’t be gotten by the Internet.

I start the United Nations in Philadelphia. It will finish in 33 turns. Amazingly, I’m still without even factories, so I cannot speed it up any more than this.

1927: I start Hollywood in San Fran.

1930: To speed up the end of the game, I rush the United Nations, costing me 4098 gold. However, at just 30% gold, I generate 325 gold per turn, so this isn’t as large of an outlay as it sounds.

1931: Woot! I need 261 votes to become UN Secretary General, and I am 240 votes on my own. I just need one other to vote for me to be Kofi Annan.

1932: yup, I’m the head of the UN, with 509 votes. The only one that didn’t vote for me is Bismark, and he voted for himself. This game is going to be over soon.

Dropped tech down to 40%, to make Genetics arrive one turn before the Internet does. Pushed culture up to 30%. Cash is at 355 per turn.

1935: Well, it’s vote time, and I can trigger the UN Election which would assure me of a victory if I wanted. This would be the end of the game, if I wasn’t so bend on seeing me pick up all those old techs I missed from the Internet. So… I’m going to have us vote on something silly like “single currency” and see if I can make myself richer while I wait for the Internet to finish in five more turns.

It’s not like I have much to worry about. Everyone loves me, and I’m about 1400 points in score from Bismarck at number two.

1936: Everyone loves the idea of a single currency, and now with 40% tech and 30% culture, I’m pulling in 391 gold per turn.

Washington pops a Great Engineer for me, so I send him over to San Fran to finish up Hollywood.

1939: I have Genetics now. Some of my cities have little to purchase, and so are stocking up on military for no reason at all. It’s interesting though—since I don’t have many of the military techs, my best unit is still the calvary, and the SAM unit. But that’s all I have that I can buy—it assumed I wouldn’t want them anymore, and cut out the riflemen, grenadiers, and the musketmen—my only troop options with these techs. Even the machine gun, which I should have, isn’t here. It assumed I don’t want it, heh.

Bah—next turn I get the Internet, but it wants another election right now! Again deferring my win so I can see the Internet hit, I choose open markets, which I know will win unanimously.

1940: I finish the Internet and get the following techs:

                              Communism
Combustion (yeah, I never got it until now!)
                              Assembly Line
                              Industrialism

Satisfied and a little surprised at how far behind my neighbors really are, I decide that in the next election I would go ahead and ask for the diplomatic victory and end it. I am now 1700 points ahead of second place, and everyone thinks I’m cute.

Hrmmm, not everyone voted for the Open Markets. It still passed, but two people didn’t vote.

Yay, I can see Aluminum now! Just before I win the game. Plus, I can now go drill an oil well for the first time.

Because I’ve never been in such a dominating position before…

                              At 100% gold, I’m pulling in 1659/turn
100% culture or tech puts me at -157/turn

I’m at 4100 gold, so I’m going to put it at 100% culture and see if a city flips before the last vote. At this rate, Washington is pulling in 543 culture per turn, San Fran is at 327, Karak is at 374, and most of the others are doing between 150 and 300 per turn.

One last round of tech trading grants me Plastics from Elizabeth.

1941: Tacitus declares me the most cultured civilization in the world. The Red Cross finishes in Seattle. I send a few workers to the oil and aluminum reserves in my territory, although it seems like a pointless gesture.

1943: Another vote—this time I call it quits and go for the diplomatic victory. Next turn assuming I win the vote, the game is over.

1944: The vote was close, but I won it with 466 votes out of a required 429. I accounted for 261 votes myself, and Hatshepsut and Elizabeth (both friendly with me) finished it off. Bismark and Isabella voted for Bismark.

Time Spent: 24 hours, 27 minutes.
I ended the game ranked first in every category but soldiers, where I was in last.
I know for those of you that play more than I do, this isn’t a big deal, but this is my first Prince level win, and for that I am happy, even knowing that it’s possible that the scenario is easier than actual Prince difficulty when you start a new game….

                              Yay! 

I have the leadership abilities of Hammurabi, apparently.

                              Next up: Monarch level!

One more tiny note that’s a little scary. I’ve been typing up all these DARs on a second computer in a Word document. Using the same spacing you see in this post, my total typing worked out to a total of 29 pages of Civ4 logging. Yeesh. I bet I’m the only one that read them all

                                Monarch level

Here goes. This will be booooooring.

                                DAR7 - Modern Era (1834-)

1838- Elizabeth trades Combustion for a couple of obsolete techs.
