  • The Same Old Middle East

So there was almost an entire week of quiet, that's pretty nice.

A few days ago 3 Palestinians were killed in Tul Karem when the IDF attempted to arrest them.

Yesterday, for the first time after the disengagement the Pals fired ~3 rockets from Gaza to Israeli territory hitting nothing and no one.
If you remember, before and during the disengagement Israel issued very harsh threats against such attempts. The Israeli claim is that now that we're out of Gaza, whatever legitimacy the Pals had in the past for their attack is gone now and therefore the Israeli reprisals will be much more violent.

A few hours later during a large Hamas demonstration a Hamas vehicle carrying lots of Kassam rockets blew up, killing 19 Palestinians and wounding dozens. The funny thing is that Israel had(probably) nothing to do with this. Even the Fatah claimed that the explosion was a result of some mistake in handling the missiles.

Hamas, being Hamas, claimed Israel is responsible.

In the past, rockets were fired on Sderot, an Israeli town a few kilometers to the North-East of Gaza, but it was random attacks, a missile or two every couple of weeks.

Tonight Hamas fired a huge volley of 25-30 missiles, injuring 5 Israelis.

So Israel is getting pissed off. So far a few Hamas warehouses in Gaza were bombed in the hours after the Sderot attack and a few minutes ago 4 Hamas members were killed in an airstrike that destroyed their cars.
According to the Israeli media, there is troop movement towards the north of the Gaza strip so that gate which was closed a week ago is about to open again.

Why is that different that the usual stuff that are always going on here? Because the Israeli retaliation will set the standard of warfare in the Gaza strip for the future.

In the past a similar situation existed with the Hizballah in the north after Israeli withdrew from Lebanon and Israel retaliated very lightly, going for high publicity but low damage missions. The end result is a balance of power that exists in the North with thousands of missiles aimed at Israeli cities.
