The Great Patriotic War of the States![]()
Pwning the British in the Revolutionary War
Pwning the Nazis alongside the British![]()

Tomorrow is the anniversary of two decisive victories in favor of freedom and republic democracy.
At Vicksburg, Confederate officer Pemberton offered Grant his surrender on July 3, with the terms of surrender completed the next day on Independence Day.
Also on July 3 Union forces defeated General Lee's Confederate forces in Pennsylvania at Gettysburg.
And on July 4 this year, let us also never forget the great risks that English Americans took when they declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776.
The American Revolution created a republic that brought to the world a government that was antithetical to governments in Europe at the time that relied on "divine right of monarchs."
The Union victory in the American Civil War determined that slavery would no longer exist in a republic democracy and had shown that like the Founding Fathers of the Revolution, Abraham Lincoln, and his numerous supporters, believed that freedom could only exist with strong unity.
This is where an awesome Mark Twain quote would be, but Apolyton says it would be too many lines. :(

This Union soldier knew which side in the Civil War was in favor of freedom.

Why don't you get off the War Between The States kick?
July 4th hasn't got sh1t to do with it.

I think July 3 and July 4 should be celebrated to remember those two pivotal victories of the Civil War just as much as we remember the American Revolution on July 4.
To me, freedom and union go hand-in-hand and that is why I personally celebrate July 3 and July 4.
Of course, I could ask you why don't you get off the "Lost Cause" myth kick.

Happy 4th July guys! It's now 87 years since the Glorius Communist People's Revolution killed the Merciless Capitalist Imperialist Pig Nicholas II.
Let the People Celebrate!

To you my ass. It's different things.
You want to celebrate a battle where thousands died, for no reason?
Give me a break, and give it a rest.

I'm not celebrating it for no reason -- the United States has survived as a republic democracy because of the Union victory in the Civil War.

Ah, yes! Sherman's war against the civilian population was a great celebration of Freedom and war crimes.

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

Or how about the massacre at Ft. Pillow, DD?
Both sides have their fair share of war crimes -- more so with the Confederacy when it came to killing captured black Union soldiers.

Sometimes in total war, harsh measures have to be taken -- could we have won World War II without bombing German cities filled with civilians?
I would not want to reverse time, and give Hitler any chance by trying to refrain from such bombings to find out.

MrFun, beyond any southerner I've met, you have a total inability to give up the civil war.
You don't need to fight any more, Yankee. It ended 150 years ago.
When we rise again, I'll call you and let you know to get back to the Union cheerleading![]()

In the meantime, I will do my share of celebrating the preservation of the United States and solemnly remember the Union soldiers who gave their lives for their country.

Aside: I'm curious why was the fourth decided as the holiday. From what I've read "the president" of the originial continental congress signed the declaration of independence on the third. Then it was sent out to be embossed most of the signatures weren't affixed until August.
So my question is when was the 4th decided as the holiday.

even though it took that long they may have decided to make it retro-active from the 4th?

Ah, yes, July 4. Independence Day. A perfect time to bring up the Civil War.![]()
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

How bad is your reading comprehension? In the OP, I already explained how July 4 is related to the Civil War, and why I personally also celebrate July 3.
