All you great players please help

I need some advice. I do not consider myself all that good of a player but I am experienced. I started off with the first "Call to Power" in 1999 and now play "CIV3 Conquests" . I can beat the game via Cultrual, Score, Domination, Science at varring levels. I have beaten several of the conquests. But I can not beat the game in a peacful Diplomatic way. My latest attempt I tried the largest map with only 3 civs, chieftin level, sedametry barbarians, least aggressive as the Greeks. I maintained a strong military to defend myself from all the attacks I recieved. I paid gold as much as 50 per turn. I gave technology as tokens of good will. I gave goods as tokens of good will. I gave in to Demands. With all the AI still grouped together starting wars with me. And after I built the UN wonder, they did not vote for me. I just can not understand how to win the Diplomatic Victory. Any Ideas please help!!!

Can't say as I really tried that with no wars, at least not that I can recall. There is a AU game that had such restriction, iirc.

You may want to go to the AU history thread and find it. It will have some games with AAR's.

The diplomatic AI appears to be more aggressive at higher levels.

The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

I've just won a diplomatic victory at Emperor level, agression set to normal. Some thoughts.

Be strong culturally from the beginning and throughout. The AI seems to be reluctant to attack strong cultures. Get the Temple of Artemis as early as you can, and make it work for as long as you can by avoid researching Education. That gives a huge cultural boost virtually for free. Be the first to start exploring by boat, so that you are the one to make "first contact" with as many other civs as possible. Once you've made contact, you can trade that with other civs.

Don't get involved in any wars. Obviously you don't want to start any yourself, and you can avoid the other civs attacking you if you are not too aggresive in your city placement. Don't try to cut off the other civs expansion by pushing right up to their borders. Don't get involved in any alliances, mutual protection pacts or trade bans.

Set up embassies as soon as you make contact with other civs, and try to get lots of trade going early on. In the mid-to-late game, when it is clear that one or more civs are clearly no longer a threat to your tech lead, or are situated so far away from your main territory as to make no difference, give them gifts of tech and even obsolete resources like horses, iron, saltpeter.

Be prepared to be hugely, extra generous once the UN is nearing completion. Give stuff away to everyone except your main rival to get them up to the "polite" level.

If you don't get elected on the first vote, make sure that you give gifts immediately after the vote, especially to the civs that voted for you or abstained.

    Oh, forgot to mention.

Don't police your borders too strictly. Obviously you don't want them to send 100 cavalry towards your capital, but allow boats, scouts, explorers etc to pass through unmolested. Kill any barbarians before the AI starts sending their units to do it. Don't build and use privateers. Although they may not get blamed on you, they generally raise everyone's temperature.

You can also try starting a war against an isolated civ, securing several alliances with yourself. Then, once the UN is completed, call for a vote.

I can call for a vote? I always thought if I had the UN, I had to wait for a viote, or can you only call for a vote if you don't have the UN?

I have won a diplomatic victory as the French on Regent...I have to say, I was surprised I won, as I had been to war with 5 of the 6 remaining civs...wasn't actually too long ago I played that game either, wish I still had the save...

The vote comes up automatically every 5 turns or something like that. I am not sue the number of turns, but it is often. If you have the UN, you decide to have a vote or not.

Sorry I am not sure on the turns, I just never remeber it, no matter how long I play.

If you don't start any wars and have the UN, then the key is to make the other civs love you by doing everything possible. Give techs, gold, and lux. Sign border agreements and even mutual protection pacts But be careful with MMP, only when other civ is not at war, and even then it's a risk. On the plus side, the other civ will love you with MMP.

    11 turns, IIRC.

I would ally against any of the other civs, keeping alive the alliance even if losing, until the target becomes an interesting victim for its friendly civs. Conquer and try again with another if doesn't work
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.
