    Anyone seen Sin City?

I know we've had a thread on this, but I can't get the search feature to work at all for me. I don't even like comic books, I have never heard of this one, but the movie looks kind of interesting. Though I'm wary on movies that rely solely on style and have no substance.

The others I'd take or leave, but this is style and substance. It's not Scott's fault that his imitators and successors could only replicate the look and not the feel

Sin City is an okay movie but I would not recommend it. It has most of the faults of Kill Bill 1 and 2 and few of the highlights. The main issue for me was the repetiveness of the action. I.E. the emasculating and beheadings by multiple characters of multiple characters. It loses shock value after the first few times. The previews are also misleading because Mickey Rourke(Marv) is featured in the majority of the movie followed by Clive Owens character. Jessica Alba, Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Benico Del Toro and any other favorite actor you care to name has a relatively small part.

I thought it was worth seeing (had to for a class, but I would have anyways) though it was definitely for style over substance.

Its not a movie I plan to see. . .

Saturday I saw "Million dollar Baby" and I quite enjoyed it (largely because it had no cutesy ending or love story for the sake of a love story)

    Sin City was, hm.

I liked it, but I wouldn't say it's a good movie, per se.

Very stylized, not as stylish, and kinda too long, which makes it less fun than it could be. I wouldn't play more than $5.50 (matinee/student discount, for instance) for it, and I'm not sure it would really be that enjoyable on the small screen.

Now that I think about it, the Trailer with the instrumental version of The Servant's "Cells" is pretty much what you should see.

hmm, I think I'll pass then. The only reason I would see it, is because I'm a Bruce Willis fan (the main reason I saw Pulp Fiction). If his part isn't large, then maybe I'll pass.

How does Jessica Alba look? I'm not the type of guy to go see movies just for a hot chick in it, but I do consider it a perk.

and I think JohnT has a weird definition of stylish.

A stylish movie to me is something like Desperado. More emphasis is put on looking cool. Now the old 80's movies weren't exactly realistic, but more emphasis was put on killing as many people as possible instead of looking cool.

Stylish movies are just representative of today's fascination of looks over everything else. Damn metrosexuals.

The most important thing is how many people you kill. And because of this, movies like Commando will always kick ass. . And yes, I know someone will bring up the scene in Commando of arnold chopping wood. But that doesn't look cool. Buff austrian dudes aren't a sexual turn on.

I wasn't impressed. They interwove a couple of vaguely related stories to give the thing an avant-garde feel, but the substance of the stories was raw sensationalism of the worst sort. The colored blood did absolutely nothing for me, nor did the maimings, beheadings and dismemberments particularily interest me. The whole thing was just style without substance.

I personally loved it. I liked the violence, I liked the comic book come to life feel to it, and i enjoyed the way the stories intertwined with each other. Granted some of the narration made me want to groan, but it fit in well with the film's noir type stylization. I also personally wished there had of been more graphic violence, and more sex, but that's just me.

Plus Jessica Alba is one of the hottest women on earth!

See, that's where we're different. I don't think that movies where the goal is to "kill as many people as possible" are all that great either. You find one genre to be far better than the other, whereas I find both to be slightly... distasteful. As you likely do mine.

It looks good, looks Max Payne inspired in a way, at least it was the first thing i thought when I saw a trailer. I like most Robert Rodriguez films (haven't seen Spy Kids but the Desperado series is great), so i'll go and see it when it comes out.

    1. I like comic books.
    2. I like turning comic books into movies.
    3. I like the desperado series.
    4. I like all of the comics by Frank Miller that I have read.
    5. I like all of the Tarantino movies I have seen.
    6. I like most of the Josh Hatnett, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, and Jessica Alba shows/movies I have seen.
    7. I did not particular like Sin City. I think that it has a very original look but underneath it's very unoriginal. It's boring to know that a character has a 99 percent chance of getting his dick, head or both seperated from his body.

The movie was OK, thought I did not find any of the violence that visceral- mildly shocking, yes, but not even the last seen with Willis and "Yellow Bastard" was that shocking. It was so stialized that it lacked much impact. But the movie itself was OK, thought I was never trully "blown away" by anything.

Pretty much all of Emerson College saw this movie opening weekend (bunch of pretentious filmmakers). I haven't seen it yet, but I will.

Diss...apparently, this movie has a great deal of substance.

It also recieved a 77% Tomatometer Rating, and is currently #96 on IMDB's top 250 Movies

I've never read that comic book. I've read other Frank Miller comics. He's a great writer of comics. Other comics like X-Men, From Hell, Spiderman, even Daredevil have been done far better.
IMDB and the tomatometer people must be blinded by the visuals. I can give them credit for that. The action, acting, and story fails to make me like this movie.
