Nah, this is like asking if smileys will ever enter the spoken language.
Languages evolve as the new replaces the old, while shakespear gets more difficult for students with each generation. Will the informal usages of 1337 survive the passage of time and become mainstream as people talk with words like LOL? I'm sure I'm not the only one to use terms like pwned in normal conversation, but will the rest of the english speaking world follow?

veni vidi PWNED!
nah, the sad geeks that use 1337 will obviously never breed to pass on their genes, it'll die off in a generation!

Hmm, searching for the right phrase to answer with...
Oh yeah. "God Forbid," that's it.

A few words of the internet culture will probably become mainstream by the time we grow old. However, since 1337 is mostly a written convention of otherwise regular language (no matter how crap they speak it), you won't hear it too much.
However, the French internet culture promotes horrendous grammar, and it is very likely that horrendous grammar becomes the norm by the time I grow old![]()

Like Kuci said, "lol", "omg" and "teh" will probably survive. "pwned" might not because with it, and many others, there is a pronunciation issue. If it does survive it'd be limited to the internet.

I am telling you, there is a proper pronounciation for 'pwn'.
It's the same as the chess piece: "pawn", only used as as a verb.

Actually 1337 lingo actually came from the telephone hackers (pre-www), so it has been around for more than a generation and is still growing.
We're sorry, the voices in my head are not available at this time. Please try back again soon.

It's also seeing widespread adoption in World of Warcraft, because it's the only way to speak to the opposing faction in-game due to language barriers and translators.
For example, "|_ 0 |_"

Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Wouldn't "pwn" sound like "own", if it was originally a typo on an online multiplayer game? It's pronunciation depends on its origins I'd guess.

Everyone knows "pwn" is pronounced "pown".

You've gotta admit that - without knowing that - it's a very weird weird way of saying it.

Some words from the Internet culture will defiitely make it into English. Like the Internet-meaning of "own". However, I dislike the way this leet-speak is used on most boards. Actually, the problem is not so much the leetspeak itself but rather the fact that many people don't even bother to write properly. I mean, completely - tons of spelling mistakes, awful grammar and no capitalization. And yes, these are native English speakers.
