Why is Planned Parenthood opposed to sonograms?

I heard this on our local TV station so I don't have a link but here is the story:

Crisis pregnancy centers generally exist in order to help women who are pregnant and are undecided on whether to carry the child to term or otherwise are confused and scared or without family support. There are hundreds of these privately funded clinics throughout the United States. Many of them are supported by churches. A local Christian organization decided to raise funds in order to give these centers sonogram machines. Apparently when women see the image of the fetus etc. they are much less likely to abort the pregnancy.

Now one would think that Planned Parenthood would stay our of this altogether but they couldn't resist making a statement that they were opposed to this because it "coerces" women to have the baby rather than aborting it.

Now there is no more excuses for these abortion mill supporters and their mantra of "choice" is exposed as a sham. They are for unimformed choice obviously. They choose to keep the women they are supposed to be so concerned about in the dark. They are the ones coercing women to have abortions when many would not have them if they were given all the facts. Facts (including the sonographic image) that Planned Parenthood and their cohorts in this lucrative business would keep hidden so they can advance their agenda of death and pull the wool over the eyes of mothers-to-be in the name of choice. Does anyone still believe them?

These abortionists are pro abortion, not pro choice. They couldn't care less about the welfare of the woman or the child (obviously). Why does much of the public continue to pretend that this is a virtuous orginization. They are the scum of the earth.

Because the Church groups trying to bring women to use these machines are trying to paint Bambi eyes on what is esentially an amorphous blob of cells.

The only references I see to Planned Parenthood not having access to sonograms is from religious anti-abortion sites with an agenda.

Their website seems to indicate they do sonograms.

    http://www.plannedparenthood.org/pp2...-nicaragua.xml

It has created one of the largest women's centers in Managua, where low income women can access comprehensive health services, including sonograms, cervical cancer screening, and psychological counseling PPSP, has been impressed how SI MUJER offers an array of high-quality services, easily accessible because they are provided under one roof and designed to meet the complex needs of many clients, regardless of income.

This story was from the CBS news station. But it is possible that they were taken over by religious zealots who have the horrible agenda of saving innocent life I suppose,

Sonograms are often necessary to determine the age of the fetus if there is some question about the date of the mother's last menstrual period. If termination is elected the exact age of the baby may be needed in order to determine what method should be used, or in states which limit the age at which termination can be done, whether or not the baby is too old to be legally terminated.

The funny thing in all this is that I actually oppose abortion. I'd much rather it restricted only to cases of incest, rape, or threat to the mother's health. Even then it would still be a choice, not a mandatory procedure.

However, in debates such as this, I side with the pro-choice camp because the anti-abortionists seem to think all of these unwanted pregnancies are going to grow up as strong, healthy, loved babies. They seem to have a disconnect from the reality that many (not all of them; I wouldn't even say "most") of these mothers are irresponsible dingbats who don't bother with proper protection, who seem to think getting an abortion is not much different from going to the bathroom: She's just expelling waste. These children either can't be cared for by their mothers or won't be because the mothers don't care. Many end up in foster care and are never quite right afterwards. The State can't give them the care and attention their parents should be providing.

Most (yes, now I would use the word "most") of these goddamn anti-abortionists simply refuse to step up to the plate and adopt these children on a large scale. All they spend their energy on is brow-beating women going to the abortion clinics. Although the thought of adopted children being raised by fundamentalcase Christians worries me deeply, at least the State wouldn't be asked to a job it wasn't meant to do nor should do.

Oh yes. Definately. I wasn't trying to argue that point. In every day practice, however, Tennessee is pretty secular. The Christian religion plays an important part in our lives, but it is not any more prominent in the slant of our newscasters than a national newscaster. So, while it is probably easy to assume a Christian bias in local news with the 93% figure you quote, it is usually not the case. Now, having not actually seen the broadcast that Lincoln quotes, it is not possible for me to say unequivocally that this is not the case.

More to the point of my post. There is a bias that simply because we are a predominntly Christian area, that all facets of our lives are dictated by Christianity. This is not really the case. In most instances, Tennessee is as secular as anywhere else. Hence..."Have you ever been to Tennessee?"

You can say a population with 93% Christians is fairly secular if you want.

But the reporter for this TV station clearly has a slant, either that or it's incredibly poor journalism. The Planned Parenthood website says they use sonograms, even...

Very well put. It certainly brings the dilema of abortion to the forefront. It also brings the need for quality sex education, including the use of contraceptives, to the forefront as well.

Perhaps my characterization of many abortion-seeking mothers being "irresponsible dingbats who don't bother with proper protection" is unfair. There is a severe problem with the way this country goes about teaching sex education. Those goddamn self-righteous religionists (predomninently Christian) keep interfering with corrective and preventitive education to force the teaching of their "Say Your Hail Marys And Pray It Goes Away" format.

On a side note, a Christian in the daycare at work was praying for my testicle. The pain has since gone away. Halleleughapraisejebus (fuk teh speeling)!!!

    I thanked her, nonetheless.
