New Evidence: Shroud of Turin Older Than Thought
Well, well, well. This should help silence some skeptics.Turin Shroud Older Than Thought
By Rossella Lorenzi, Discovery News
Jan. 25, 2005 — The Shroud of Turin, the piece of linen long believed to have been wrapped around Jesus's body after the crucifixion, is much older than the date suggested by radiocarbon tests, according to new microchemical research.
Published in the current issue of Thermochimica Acta, a chemistry peer- reviewed scientific journal, the study dismisses the results of the 1988 carbon-14 dating.

"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

Of course, it is perfectly possible the cloth itself was made in ancient times. That doesn't tell us when the image that appears was put on the cloth. How hard would it have been for someone to break into an old tomb, steal a burial shroud and then put an image on it? At the time the shroud appeared in Europe, there was a "relic mania" going on where merchants were selling purported pieces of the cross, shrouds, bones, etc. At one point, according to church documents, there were at least a dozen purported shrouds making the rounds on the continent, enough pieces of the "true cross" to make a cabin and enough bones of disciples to make an army of giants.
Tutto nel mondo è burla
Exactly. That puts the shroud well within the time of Jesus's death.Originally posted by Zkribbler

And Santa Clause could exist as well.

There is still some dispute. It's kind of like Socrates that his existance is not very well defined. Records are spotty, at best.Originally posted by Richelieu

And Boris, the technique needed to put such an image on the shroud was not possible until modern times.

Do you really need a piece of cloth to affirm your faith? Shouldn't it come from something a little less... meaningless? If you believe in Jesus and God, then believe in them. If you don't then don't. Don't let these silly material things influence the supernatural. Personally, no, I don't believe in God. And this cloth has no relevance towards my belief one way or the other.

To some extent, yes. Only one contemporary account mentions him, and rather briefly too.
Personally, I find it simpler to assume that the beloved cult leader did exist.

Wasn't there a lot of cloth around any given year back some thousands of years ago? You know, for people to cover themselves? Just find a piece that is 2k year old and say it's his.
Well, the markings on the shroud are consistent with the details accounted in the Bible on the death of Christ.Originally posted by tinyp3nis

As a matter of fact, I don't think there is any other burial cloth that has ever been found that is anything like this one.
You must know that the exact way in which Jesus Christ was killed brought him much more suffering than the way any other person in history has died. His death was the most horrifying of all deaths.

Steve Jobs is the anti-Christ.
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Not quite. Certainly it was one of the most horrible.
But it's not about that. It's about that some people die horrible way for their -true or not- crimes. Some people die a horrible death without a reason...
But Jesus was crucificed by people for preaching love.
Not for something bad, not for something wrong, but for something obviously good.
Lorizael; this shroud is important, because it is an evidence for parts of the Bible and Christian tradition, and because it's supernatural cloth, which is a miracle for us all to see.
