Question Sid Meier's Pirates! vs Sid Meier's Sim Golf

I've gotta ask the admins here - what was going through their minds when they deemed that Sim Golf was newsworthy and its development and progress be followed here but that Pirates! wasn't - I would've thought that the latter was at least a little closer to empire-building and would be far more popular among the people that hang out at Apolyton!

I can only presume that the combination of Sid and Will Wright sounded interesting, more interesting than what actually came out, while Pirates! is a sequel to a well known game.

And SimGolf could have been a huge success like the Sims, and this would attract even more people to the forums...

Me the same. And within a very short time (like 3 months or so - is this a record?) , it dropped drastically in price from $69.95 to $29.95. There's $40 I'll never get back. (BTW, I'm talking NZ$ here).

That's a story in itself, the number of games I've bought and before I've really got value for money from them (maybe only played them a bit), they've dropped in price.

Has it really been that wise devoting so much time to RON? It's a bit of a sneak to consider it an empire-building game in any case. Why no coverage of other RTS games of similar ilk then?

I've got to say that RON is a most disappointing game for me. I just don't get it and why nearly everyone raves about it. For me it has no soul and feels empty somehow. The only thing "innovative" is the borders I suppose.

Given Brians track record, i would have been surprised not to see the coverage.

hehe, simgolf was not a bad game at all, it was just... boring. after you had seen all the little things in the game, there simply wasn't anything else to see.

I think the admins should consider a Pirates! dedicated forum, I'm sure it will be a good idea.

Why? Because it's not Civ? I think that reason is nonvalid now that we have had RON here... Of course, as Ming says, the owners have the last word.

Ghengis Farb can be the mod of the Pirates Forum.

I would have thought you would say it should be me, considering the "Rhoth's a little pirate" avatar you had for awhile after the Age of Discovery PBEM.

    Cause its an RPG.

All the game forums are about TBS - the sole exceptions are Paradox games and RON. Paradox games are widely seen as closer to TB than to RTS, despite being real time. RON, though an RTS, was a game that paralleled the Civ setting (historical empire builder, fulls span of history, etc) and was by Brian Reynolds, who was responsible for SMAC, and heavily responsible for Civ2.

Pirates! is by Sid, but its not CLOSE to the Civ genre OR the Civ setting.

If theyre gonna bring in Pirates, why not have a forum for misc Sid games, which could include Simgolf, SM Gettysburg, SM Antietam, CPU Bach, his flight sim, etc.

I thought it was more of a strategy game than an rpg. with the land battles and such.

There will be no Pirates!-specific forum here on Apolyton -- sorry.

For the record no additional SimGolf news stories will be reported and, indeed, none have been since 2002. It was then decided that given Apolyton was (and still will) not add SG to its gaming coverage, particularly given its not fitting into the construct of games that we otherwise cover(ed), it was not appropriate for further time and energy to be spent reporting on developments related to it.

I think the game is dead anyways. I alway meant to get around to playing it some more aside from the first day I installed and played it. I just never got around to it. The thrill wasn't there for me.

Actually, I like the idea of the forum for Sid Meier's games in general since he's such an icon in the games industry and so many of his games are classics. There's already a classic games forum so perhaps that one could simply be extended a bit?

There are only a few games though that would garner discussion other than Civ. We do have an other games forum, and there are tonnes of Pirates! threads around at the moment.

MarkG said we were not going to have one so we will just have to live with threads in the Other Games forum.

BTW I got it last night and stayed up till 3;00 am playing.

The wife is awaful sore at me this morning

Then my son wakes up early sees the new game plays for 2 hours and gets farther than I did in 5 hours last night

Thats the 12 year old not the 14 year old

    Im past that.

I was doing things around the house, like the "Honey Do" list and two of three were playing Pirates. I would check up on them and give them advice every once in a while, compare notes about how they were doing, and then go back to slaving away, it was almost as fun as playing.
