  • PANZER BATTLES on the RIVER CHIR!

    I'm almost finished with a new scenario . . . .

PANZER BATTLES on the RIVER CHIR!

In the winter of 1942, the German Wehrmacht struggled with the Red Army between the Don and Volga rivers in the deep Ukraine. Twin offensives planned by the brilliant Russian commander Zhukov had succeeded in trapping the German 6th Army in a pocket around Stalingrad. Hitler ordered colonel general Von Manstein to lead 4th Panzer Army in an attempt to breakthrough and rescue the surrounded German army in the beleaguered city. While Von Manstein's forces slammed into the massed tanks of the Russians southwest of Stalingrad, the 48 Panzer Korps stood as a fire brigade supporting several infantry divisions defending the line of the River Chir, just north of the 4th Panzer Army's line of attack. Historically, the 48th Panzer managed to hold the river line, preventing the Soviets from overrunning Rostov and thus expediting the flawless retreat of the 1st Panzer Army, which had been in the foothills of the Caucasus.

This scenario attempts to recreate that operational situation. The units represent regiments, brigades, and kampfgruppen, and the squares represent approximately 20 miles. There is no research. There is no money. There is no diplomacy. There are no air units. There are damn few replacements/reinforcements. There is no relief. As the German player, you must hold the river line, using your armored and mechanized forces as a mobile reserve.

I've begun testing it already. It's together and functional, and it uses a small bunch of fairline's snow-covered Russian and German WWII unit graphics. Who made the "Socialist Realist Cities"? I'd like to use them. Eivind, I'd like to use some of your snow terrain-graphics from your Norway scenario.

    More later. . . .

I would have loved to see the entire Eastern campaign, but the pivotal battle chosen would be nice.

I can only repeat what those two gentlemen already said

When can we expect a beta?

Btw, to continue with the nit-picking: Erwin von Lewinski, called Manstein was already Field Marshal at that moment. He earned this grade by storming Sevastopol earlier in 1942

How far will the scenario go to change history?

What will happen if the Axis forces withstand the Soviet stranglehold of steel?

The socialist realist cities are made by Smiley!

                PS
I hope you are not going to use the 'G' or 'R' suffix to denote German or Russian units!

Looks like I may have to shelve this one for the time being. I just can't get the AI to run the Russians effectively.

It's on the back burner, but not dead.

I tried to start a 2-person game via a hot seat game. No luck--the cheat button is not available. If there are any hex edit whizzes out there who can help, shout out. As things stand now, I'm out of ideas of this one.

Why not do a Barbarossa campaign scenario then!

I'm happy to report that this one is now back off the shelf.

Found a way to create a two player game without having to resort to hotseat.

It'll involve almost starting over, but then, this one isn't that big a task so it won't be too much trouble.

Sorry I missed this thread, Phenix.

Sounds like a really fun scenario to play. You may of course, as may anyone, use whatever you want from my work. All I ask for is my name on the credit list I looked through some of the early backup folders for the Norwegian Campaign, and I cooked up some unused terrain from the scen. Use them if you want, I don't need them.

                              Thank you Eivind.

                              Now, for my request list;

1.) Curt, can I use some of those people gifs that you use in WWII scens so often?

2.) Does anyone know of a modern city style for the German occupiers in the Ukraine . . . . that is not isometric? Gareth, wanna custom make a new terrain?

3.) Smiley, can I use the "Socialist Realist" cities? They're very nice, Russian, and not isometric.

4.) How do I set the starting date and turn stuff so that each turn is one day? Can this be done?

I may think of more later.
