  • Would Today's Republican Party Oppose Slavery?

Or would would they say it's a state's rights issue?

Would today's Republican Party start the Civil War to keep the Union together?

The oroginal GOP was a party that argued for more power to the Federal government and less power to the states. The Democrats and Republicans switched positions somewhere along the way. What happened?

The switch occured with Wilson I believe. Even though he still tried to carry the Southern Democrats. He made it easy for the weakened Republicans to pick them up.

I should think so. Today they oppose Abortion, so the Republican Party today opposes the country's greatest moral evil, just as it did it in it's beginning.

Their moral opposition to abortion is one of their few connections to the original GOP, as both then and now, the party was deeply religious.

The point, however, is on almost every other issue, the Republicans have become the Democrats, and vice versa.

What happened so I've heard was that the Democrats decided to support civil rights during the 1960s, and this caused the South to jump ship.

That's only part of it though. By the time of FDR, the Dem's were already becoming their opposite and the Republicans were opposing them on the grounds that he was trying to create big government. The Republicans began their transformation between the two Roosevelts and have only just completed it.

The Republican Party is generally ok with states rights, but on issues of great moral depravity, the GOP will support the Feds jumping in. And so today, our platform calls for a Constitutional Amendment banning abortion.

In every age there seems to be a question of liberal vs. conservative. A conservative, typically will be more devicive, nationalistic and less inclined to civil liberties. How we view the slavery issue today is how people in the future will view, say, gay marriage, which won't be pushed under the rug. Like they say, todays liberal is tomorrows conservative... todays liberal concerns, when they are accepted into law and culture, become a matter of historical pride (the conservatives who opposed them are judged harshly by history).

Different issues however, same thought processes. Todays conservatives, if taken back in time with no memory of today to the 1850's/1860's, would in all likelihood support slavery.
