    • 2004 PBEM Census - Final Results

33 people filled out the census.

They are involved in a total of 137 two-to-four person games for an average of 4.15 games per person.

They are involved in a total of 173 four-to- eight player games for an average of 5.24 games per person.

That gives an average of 9.39 games per person.

The average for completed games is 1.70.

And I believe the median was 7. There were 16 scores equal to or higher than 7, and 16 equal to or lower. If I remember my stats correctly.

The top 3 PBEM'ers in terms of # of games:

Paddy the Scot (45) (gee, what a surprise)
      Beta (25)
      Aqualung71 (20)

      Favorite Games:

      5 Votes AU601
      5 Votes Mesopotamea
      4 Votes All Day Round
      3 Votes Grand Passage
      3 Votes Frog Stomp
      3 Votes 2-A-Day

A number of games garnered two votes.

Yup - the census timing was as of August. Things have changed. I know I have more games.

              • So I did some playing around ...

                Average games played (total): 9.4
Std. Deviation in that population: 8.15 (wow!)

If you eliminate anyone with 4 or less games (75% of the population is left), the numbers go to 11.6 and 8.2 ... and if you select for >5 games (which cuts down to 60% total, meaning 15% of you have 5 games the numbers go up again to 13.25 and 8.4 -- the constantly rising standard deviation thanks essentially entirely to Paddy, Beta, Aqua, Chrisius and myself.

Cut anyone with <10 games out and you get 16.9 average and std dev of 9.1 ... but you still have 37% of the population left. Over a third of us are ... crazy.

And finally, anyone with < 15 games out and you get 15% of the population, average of 24.8, and std dev of 9.45 ... Thanks, Paddy, for that stat: if you round off to 25, that means you're the only player above that average out of the five of us.

                Graphs et al to follow

Guess you can't argue with statistics. What did Disraeli say:

" Lies. Damn Lies. And then there's statistics."

                  Or something like that.

                      • Actually ... Clemens (as in Samuel Langhorne, aka Mark Twain ) was quoting, not plagiarizing, Disraeli. More than likely disraeli never said it, but Twain attributed it to him nonetheless.

                        • Well that I did not know. Thank you.

I had always thought it was a direct quote from some parliamentary debate.

Hmmm- I thought Cream's ablum 'Disraeli Gears' had this quote sampled from a Warner Bros cartoon featuring Foghorn Leghorn. I might have got something mixed up somewhere along the line, though...
