Wow I suck again...time for cheat codes.![]()
id hasn't had deep gameplay since q1. id single player games are like action movies that are heavy on special effects. fun to play through once but after that you'll probably be sorta bored. i always prefer good gameplay but cutting edge graphics and sound are worth experiencing. there will probably be mods that add doom 2 style puzzle and heavy monster fighting gameplay but it might not run good for a year or two.Originally posted by ZargonX
Everything I've read about this so far is "fantasmamazing graphics" and "fantasmamazing sound." But what about the gameplay? The one person who actually bothered to write about it said the whole thing lacked depth. Can anyone discuss this?
how does doom 3 compared to quake 2 single player wise? i imagine that's the closest old id game to doom 3.

Um. It's DOOM.
If you liked DOOM I and DOOM II, you'll like DOOM III.
:-p

I can't see any problems with sound quality.
Well, there are sometimes areas open enough to do some strafing and running with shooting, that's fun.
See, single-player is much better than Quake 2 (and I actually replayed that recently). First, this game has more of a story. Quake 2 had that Stroggos war, but more backstory than story. Second, Quake 2 graphics were good for the time, but nowhere near looking real, while Doom 3 is real enough to be scary. And it's just more fun, generally.

This game is amazing.
I've been playing with Ultra-High settings on 1024x768 with no problem. I thought I'd try it on 1600x1200... boy that got choppy.
btw, Athlon 2800+, GeForce FX 5900, 1 gig RAM
The gameplay is immersive. The graphics are amazing. The sound is great. And shooting aliens and zombies is really fun. I'm not that far into the game, but I'd thought I'd check in. I don't know what else to say. This game is just awesome.
BTW, release date is August 3rd, not August 5th. I went out to my local Gamestop and got it no problem.
I'm really impressed by the weapon models. The rocket launcher in particular looks ultra-realistic. I can't wait for mods to come out for this game. They are going to be great.
My one complaint is about multiplayer. There are hardly any servers (as to be expected). And the games are like 4 or 8 people. I have seen a 16 person server, but it was empty. I am disappointed that there isn't a co-op mode for multiplayer. Going through the game with some friends would be great.

Sava: there was I think a co-op mode for single player maps somehow, not sure though. You got to rocket launcher already? Must be far enough then. There are few servers because the game is just out, and you don't see the many servers of people who use pirated version. To enable more than 4 players, you need mods...
And yes, the game looks freaking amazing. Especially at night. Right, I'm back to it.

No music is OK, because ambience is great and all, but I play my winamp on the background with playlist filled with other evil/hell/horror game/movie soundtracks and etc. It adds to the atmosphere IMO.
problem is that my computer crashes winamp once inawhile and evrything gets &^@(*)&*@$@ed up...![]()

How do you guys think it will be graphically on that setup? Could I run high detail or better on 1024x768 or higher?

Pfft, cheats before completing the game.
Guynemer, I think you would be able to run Ultra High on 1024, that would probably be the best bet. If you want a higher resolution, you'll probably want lower detail.

I decided not to cheat. Very good. I think I'm missing a lot of secret areas unfortunantly though. Might be fun for the second playthrough, once someone has a complete walkthrough done.

Since this is not just any FPS, but Doom, I would of course not dare open any walkthrough. So far I've completed all FPS I've played once or maybe twice, and then left em, except for first two parts of Doom, which I replayed forever. Now, I also know I will be playing this through many times!

Thanks for the tips, guys.
Now as to the game: I enjoy FPS to a certain extent, but they need a good hook to really grab me. With Doom 3, it looks like that hook is fear.
So, how scary is this game? For a frame of reference, I found System Shock 2 to be extremely creepy and it made me jump and/or yell on more than one occasion.

Xbox DOOM3 is going to have coop. Going to need to get that.
Rumour has it it will not only be split-screen coop, but Xbox Live coop.![]()

As for the scariness effect. I typically don't find horror movies scary, I think they're boring more than anything else. I haven't played SS2, but I have played some other games/parts thereof that are supposed to be scary. I did several times appreciate the creepy setting, and I did of course on more than one occasion get surprised by a monster sneaking up from behind or something.
Doom3, so far, has had me jumping slightly repeatedly, and there were two BIG jumps for me, I actually dropped my mouse on one, scared me a lot. Some of the moments when there are no monsters around are scariest. The scare is absolutely Stephen King-standard.

I was thinking the same thing.
I'm sure the monsters look great and the eerie darkness is of paramount importance in a Doom game, but for a game that requires such computational heavy lifting, it better be more than tracking down corner shadows..
i mean, after all the hardware hype for the great graphics, it was quite funny to hear people say that it was so dark you could hardly see anything...

While there might be a physics engine that applies to the jugs, I doubt that an entire engine was written specifically for the funbags. - Cyclotron - debating the pressing issue of boobies in games.

I think another thing that adds to thr scariness is the voice acting. Its cheesy in some parts but mostly from what ive gone through so far the talking is quite varied (3/4 variations per person) and can be creepy. Like that scientist bloke who wont tell you whats going on, so i shot him in the head when he turned around. Idiot.

Asher, Xbox will not have split screen. The graphic demands are too much. It will support xbox live co-op though.

Right now I can only say wow. This is the best action game I've ever played it seems at the moment.
Spoiler:
This game is everything I wanted in an FPS. I'm not really the type of guy who moves really fast through FPS levels. I go rather slowly and this game is good for that since I don't have to take on a whole bunch of guys at a time.

I dont understand why the PC version couldnt have MP coop and XBOX can. At least they might add it in a future patch hopefully. You need coop when playing at 10-15fps.

Got the game yesterday, and have been playing for an hour or so... but becayse I'm a slow player (and the loading time between levels are long), I haven't got that far yet
The sounds a ok... I don't have any of those sorround (sp?) sound systems, so the quality can't be that high on my computer...
I can play it on 1024*768 with high most of the time... though at the place I stopped playing last night it was very laggy, though except from that small part, it had run fine
I'm not easy to scare, so I've only been a little scared a few times...
But they do have some nice ideas in the game, like at one point they tell you to go to some website to find a code to unlock something... I like this idea... but they've failed with this idea too, since it's impossible to alt+tab into Windows while playing... and because I just had loaded the game as I got there, I never got to unlock it (remember I have long loading times)
This space is empty... or is it?
It sure would be great if they released a patch for this... it could be awsomeOriginally posted by Maquiladora

And before I forget:
The game doesn't have any good level design... the level design is standard... why don't they make the levels a bit more dynamic, so you can actually choose between two paths instead of just one???![]()

ADG, nah, you at no point must go to the website to proceed, just an added bonus. Oh, and wait till 2-3 more hours, you will be scared...
About darkness, I never said it was a bad thing, it's completely brilliant. You do see the monsters quite enough, and admire all the graphical beauty. Darkness is not a complaint with me.

If they had several possible paths for levels, I'd no doubt get lost. Levels are great also in that that there's no "Quake 2 running back" syndrome, when you did something at one end of the map, and then spend time going back to the beggining through the entire map. Here, when you need to get back to start of the map, you'll either find a door that brings you straight there, or will take another path to it.
