Yeah, sometimes it is instructive to see such things with one's own eyes.

And yeah, Ming doesn't give a flip what you or I think.

Being a mod isn't a popularity contest... there are many different OPINIONS on how things should be handled... so it's no surprise that people disagree at times.

If one is a mini-mod of a particular forum, one gets the emails as well. Of course by the time you get there Ming has had his fun already.

...as evidenced recently from a spammish post or three in the Civ3 SPDG. I'm glad it was justified this time

We can't be on line every minute... there will be times when our job becomes clean up... there are also times when people are shocked on how fast we do act.

It all depends on who is around and how much time we have to check things out... we do have real lives to deal with as well

I had a break from Civing - and Apolyton. On coming back I noticed that the general standards of propriety have risen a bit. That does not mean they were low before, they weren't. In fact they were fine by most standards and excellent by internet standards.

I attribute the slight rise in standards to the further entrenchment of the general good fellowship which prevails here but also to consistency on the part of those who moderate.

That said there has been a little bit of racism lately - much of it very plainly down to not much more than youthful high spirits. Stuff that it does more harm to challenge than any possible good.

But I too have reported a couple of posts that just slightly went over the edge to become objectionable.

The convenience of the report button is that it identifies the post for you and is just one mouse click away.

But I can see that a pm may be no more trouble, really. So I'll try to remember that is the preferred method - should there be another case.

Are you the best recipient of the pm, Ming, or would it be better to spread the favour of their receipt around? (Not that I plan to become a habitual reporter of posts.)

Incidentally we are fortunate in our ethnic minority posters - especially I think the Israeli/jewish ones. They are a pretty dignified crew and do not ever seem to get onto any high horses.

PM' work the best for me... I get a pop up, so if I'm on line, I see it quick. Email alerts go into the apolyton system... I do not leave an open window to that system, and I check it when I have time... so my response time is much slower unless I just happen to be checking.

As far as whether I'm the best receipient, or that you should spread it around... it depends on the time of day and who is on line. If it's late night US time, and UR is on line, he would be the best person to send it to...

Now, I'm not trying to eliminate the use of the report post feature. It serves an important role and should be used. But if you see something that requires quick action... like links to porn sites, or massive spamming, PM's to key people as well as the report feature will speed up our response times.

IIRC there is an admin forum.
Why does the report function not create a thread in the admin forum, and do the admins automaticly get a pm?

That way they can discuss on what to do with the report (if nessecary)

Right now I understand that when I want to e-mail Ming I just can use the report function. No matter if I want to report something, or just want to say 'hi'

Because then the mods' spam would be contaminated with our own

                    Thank you.

PM then in the cases you cite - but report post maybe when the objectionable post does not cry out to be removed, just might cause a mod to send a PM explaining the policies of the site. Action which is not time sensitive.

I did get a bit personally irritated a couple of weeks ago - at what might be termed "balkans mayhem denial". I don't really know why that should irritate me - I have no connection to the balkans or any of its various people as far as I know. But it was posts implying that one or other of the various peoples had never been beastly to the others which made me, for a moment, feel cross. Just for a second I could understand why holocaust denial has that effect on some.

But that is a quirk of course - not a matter for reporting or whatever.

I hope you all gain some satisfaction from the work you do moderating. It is appreciated.

1st rule about admin forum is you don't talk about admin forum.

So I'm currently breaking the rules by talking about the admin forum?

there is a hack for that, but it's for:

vBulletin Version 3.0.0 Release Candidate 3

and apolyton hasn't upgraded yet since it would be heck to transfer all the special hacks that Gramphos and co. have selflessly programed for the site
