The time limit for us to respond to Boondi has passed, and we refuse to accept their conditions. We are continuing to evacuate our citizens from Eastern Catherin and the military are bunkering down in the Eastern sections...

We will not surrender to this Evil Force to the South ....

At the stroke of 9.45pm local time after waiting the stipulated period, the 1st and 2nd Squadron from the 1st Aviation Regiment mobilised along with the 2nd Old Blue SAS regiment. Within minutes of take off the SAS were landing on the eastern outskirts of Catherin. Their objective to recon the city for hostile troops, locate strategic locations to set up control points and relay information back to forward control so the can start to co-ordinate the infantry insertion. The 2nd Squadron encountered slight resistance from the air but with the Squadron at full strength the AH-64A/D Apache helicopters had target acquisition weapons deployed before the hostile aircraft were able to return fire. No ground resistance was encountered in the air from east Catherin.

At approximately 1.00am after receiving West Apolyton’s deceitful reply, Boondi mobilised its Defence Force.

At approximately 3.45am the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Battalions of the 2nd Brigade were mobilised and with the support of 5th and 6th Squadrons of the 3rd Aviation Regiment.
The troop’s objective is to secure a perimeter around eastern Catherin in an arc approximately 5 km from the city. The remaining elements of the 2nd Brigade are in route via Road and land. No resistance was encountered in the region immediately east and north east of Catherin.

Boondi will not stop or detain any civilian elements fleeing the city. However any remaining civilians should evacuate the disputed area immediately.

The remaining elements of the 2nd Division and the 3rd Division are currently on alert status and ready to move at a moments notice.

The 4th, 5th and 6th Divisions have been deployed to Boondi’s Western border. As well as 6 SAM Batteries. This is merely a precautionary measure. Boondi does not want trouble from Guardinia, but we will defend ourselves from foreign intervention. Boondi has halted any border crossings between Guardinia and Boondi. Any air traffic, or land border crossings will be considered hostile and we will take action.

Boondi’s Air Bases are on their highest alert status.

Major Peterson was seen running down the hall, he bumped past the secretaries he usually flirted with, and went helter skelter straight into the Chiefs Office.

Wit hone look the General realsied something was up. He pressed his intercom for silence and all doors were locked.

The major spoke hurriedly and handed over some paper work to the general who then swore and slammed his fist down hard.

He picked up his phone and pressed the Red button on the side and was immediatly answered on the other end "Code Red Alpha Delta Zulu" he said into the phone. He then inserted the paperwork into the fax machine and sent them, Electronics scanned his voice for recognition pattens before the person on the other end answered. "Get here now !!!!"

Later in the Chief of Defences OFfice....

"High command has issued orders to go retrieve the last few nukes from WA immiediatly. Hercules transports are on their way their now with the operatives almos ttheir already via jet. If Boondi press too far they wil llay hands on them, we must not allow that...... "

    OOC:

Ack! We clearly need to spend more on our military. But first we need to fix our economy some more...

Good thing we have allies, otherwhise we'd be very far stretched indeed...

Actually, I believe the real number of people in the Guardinian military is just slightly over half of what the calculator comes up with. Guardinia tends to favor equipment and training over sheer numbers.

    The Octagon
    Ciudad de Karakas

At the Octagon's main command center (which was not, as many people believed, at the middle of the building), General Eric Jensen's hotline from the Rose Tower rang. It was the President, as it always was. They spoke for several minutes. Then General Jensen hung up and walked out of the room.

He moved purposefully through the hallways. It was late at night, and most of the civilian employees had gone home. Only spies, die-hard military planners, and bachelors were here at this hour. And, of course, General Jensen, as the supreme commander. (It didn't hurt that his apartment was five minutes walk from the Octagon's front door.)

At the far end of the Octagon was a room full of telephones. General Jensen picked up one, and made a call to Guardinia . . .
Everything changes, but nothing is truly lost.

OOC: At the moment, about a quarter to a third of Guardinia's military forces are engaged in Azan, including just over half the navy and a good 60% of the air force. The air force, however, are mostly flying out of their own home bases and can be "switched around" pretty easily. The same goes for various support and logistics crews that are supporting units in Azan from their home bases. Some of them may be able to also support other operations, but we can not stop supporting the units in Azan until we withdraw them.

Guardinia's navy and air force are pretty large and modern, comparable to the US in real life (for a nation more than 10 times the size in terms of population).
The army is relatively small for a nation of Guardinia's size, but it's well equipped, highly mobile and packs a powerful punch. Their most significant weakness is that they can't be everywhere at once and can get stretched pretty thin at times. At the moment, there are regions along the border to Boondi where we have battallions covering areas that some strategical analysts would consider too wide for brigades...

    Edit: Fixed a typo.

GNN Headline News - Naval exercises underway on Guardinia's east coast

Elements of the Guardinian Navy today began what appears to be the opening moves of a large joint forces exercise in Guardinian and international waters near the border to Boondi. Officials refused to comment, saying they would issue a statement at a later time. More details in our 6 o'clock broadcast...

[OOC: Don't have much more time to work on this today, but it is a start... Any and all allies of Guardinia are welcome to join the exercise at any time.]

In responce to the Guardinian "Exercise" Boondi has sent elements of its own Navy to observe the Joint Forces Exersise.
Boondi has also contacted the Guardinian government for clarification of the exercise area as the scale of the one shown is too small for accuracy. Boondi does not want to encroach on the exercise area uninvited.

President Jesaulenko sat in his office when General Kernahan came in with a more than smug look on his face. “What is it Steve.”
“Sir the Infantry elements of the 2nd Brigade have reached the outskirts of Catherin and are currently advancing into the suburbs. At this stage they have encountered no resistance.” “Good, what of the ‘Old Blue Boys’”. “Well Sir that is the main reason I’m here, they have secured the main road on the border of Guardinia and Western Apolyton. They encountered pockets of resistance in achieving their objective and have suffered minimal casualties, however it seems Western Apolyton does not wish to surrender this critical access route so easily and are engaging our troops now.” “Alright, send the 1st SAS squadron, currently in the northern mountains into assist. And I want the 3rd and 4th Brigades ready to move in and secure a perimeter behind the 2nd Brigade. We don’t want them flanking us from the east. Leave the 1st Brigade in the northern mountains for the time being and send in Divisional Support Engineers to finishing digging in the Artillery Batteries and Tank Squadrons.” “O.k. Sir will that be all.” “One last thing. What is happening with Guardinia and that Naval Exercise on our south eastern boarder.” “You’ll have to talk to Admiral Bradley on that one Sir, but I believe he has some elements with FO’s onboard in the area to observe what’s going on.” “Thanks Steve that will be all.”

Details on the exact location and extent of the exercise area have been released to the general public, including all governments.

Guardinia welcomes Boondi observers and might even invite a few to literally "come inside" if our allies agree.

The government offices were in turmoil. Files in the central records office were being shredded at max speed.

"We must never let the world see these papers" said Corporal Jane Doe to her assistant Private Jonnie Dear.

"Orders from on high state this is priority A1"

The young private stooped to read a few words on the paper " What does all this mean ?"

"You shouldnt have read that Jonnie!" said Jane and pulled out a silenced pistol and shot her. The sheet she had been reading slipped out of her hand and floated to the floor.

The words read ..." this agreement supercedes all other agreements and places the new border 45 miles to the north of current borders, Boondi an Western Apolyton agree to the rightful ownership of Boondi on these mountain slopes...."

Jane smiled as she placed it into the Shredder and follwoed it with the bank account records of one ex President of Boondi , John Ellliot, the accounts detailed secret payments occuring shortly after the last war between their coutnries.

The Evacuation of Catherin continued for the rest of the week, whilst many felt comfortable t ostay in west catherin, many were now hitting the roads north . Boondi Troops were seen raping and pilalging in the town and fear ruled the streets.

WA troops had taken heavy losses , but were now holding open the final mountain pass linking catherin to the south and guardina . Bondi forces were yet to close this pecious link.

Approx 100,000 Catherin citizens were attemtping to cross south into Guardina.

[OOC: Yikes! So Boondi is telling the truth here and Western Apolyton's lying. Well, Guardinia doesn't know that...]

On the highway south of Catherin, Guardinian side of the border

The road was packed. Refugees were heading south into Guardinia. Relief workers were heading north into Western Apolyton. Guardinian Military Police was directing traffic while keeping some lanes of the highway clear for use by the Guardinian Military. It looked like they wanted to be ready to move something big in a hurry...

A few miles further south along the same highway...

The 9th Marine Division had just been ordered to move north on the double. If the mission was approved by Western Apolyton, they were to cross the border into Western Apolyton, secure the mountain pass and keep the highway open to civilian refugees until further notice. They were not to engage in hostilities against either combatant except in self defense - or in defense of innocent third parties...

Guardinian military units are ready to enter your territory south of Catherin to secure highway and assist in evacuation of civilians. Do we have your approval for this mission?

“How many more Lieutenant?” asked Major Camporeale. “That’s about all I can see Sir.The rest won’t be back for a while. That CS gas is harmless but does sting the eyes for a while.” Replied the young SAS Troop Commander, peering through his binoculars. The Refugees has been slowly but steadily fleeing south Catherin, but has stopped when the SAS fired a few canisters of CS gas their way deliberatly to temporaly stop the flow of civilians “Now you absolutely sure that pass is in Western Apolyton” inquired the Major. “Yes sir, the border is about 800m past that pass at the check point.” said Lieutenant Fisher, pointing to his map.

“Very well, hand me the radio. 0A this is Blue Dog 5, Fire Mission over…………….” “Blue Dog 5 this is 0A, Fire Mission out.” “This is Blue Dog 5 request gunship support over.” “This is 0A, gunships are in support out.” “This is Blue Dog 5 ……Charley Tango Mike……. Siera Whiskey Golf, more to follow over” “This is 0A send over.” “This is Blue Dog 5, Destroy mountain pass to deny access by Road and foot, more to follow over.” “This is 0A, send over.” “Blue Dog 5, 200x200m steep rocky slopes, more to follow over.” “0A send over.” “Blue Dog 5, Gunship Squadron, fire for effect over.” “0A, Rodger Gunship Squadron, fire for effect out.”

“O.k. Lieutenant, you better tell the boys to get down, that Squadron is only about 2 minutes from here.” “Yes sir.”
As the Lieutenant was returning from informing the rest of his troop and the other troop commanders, he heard the distinct sound of the AH-64D Apache helicopter fly overhead, Wocka wocka wocka wocka. Wow, he though to himself ther is a lot of choppers for not such a big task, but then he reliased of the 16 chopers only 4 were gunships, the rest were fast attack choppers in support.
No sooner had he though this, the gunships started firing into the pass. The first few rounds hit exactly were they needed to to bring the pass crumbling down onto the road rendering it impassable. The sheer cliffs either side of the road made it the only vehicular access into Catherin fron the south. The remaining rockets just added to the pile of rubble, making the task of clearing that much more difficult.

“Alright Lieutenant, You know what is required now.” Asked Maj Camporeale. “Yes sir, we have it under control.” Replied Lt Fisher,as he signaled to his troop to move out towards the newly made mountain.

    Western Apolyton to Guardina

We gleefully accept your support in this time of our crisis. The Boondi nation is just an arrogant evil force and will not take no for an answer. Unfortunalty the pass between our two great nations has been attacked and closed by boondi Troops. To get to Catherin now you will either have to traverse the mountians of come via the coastal road. We thankyou for keeping our people safe within your borders, there are many more still trapped within Catherin and unfortuanlty it seems many have persihed in the attack on the Pass Highway.

    Naval exercise area, Guardinia

Admiral Ramirez was sweating. Yes, the wind was cool on this part of the ocean, but the tension was palpable on board the RLK-NV Second Sunrise. There were three ships to the cruiser's left, three to its right, spread in a loose formation since missiles had already been targeted on his task force.

    "Target tracking?" Ramirez inquired.

"Triangulating the location of the last missile, sir . . . we have a target. Co-ordinates 42 degrees north, 7 degrees west."

Ramirez did not smile. "Let's send them a wake up call. Prepare a missile for launch."

A moment later, the tactical office responded. "Missile fired, sir. We have a confirmed hit."

"Todos dos Santos is hit, sir!" warned the man at the radio.

    "Damn! Bring us about!"

"I've got a Guardinian submarine, sir."

Ramirez stared at the horizon. "Depth charges away."

Then the radio man spoke again. "That's time, sir."

Admiral Ramirez allowed himself a smile as his staff applauded each other. The simulated missiles had claimed only one of his ships today. Tomorrow it might be none, or it might be more.

"Message for Guardinian command," he said. "Good game. How about another?"

Control centre, heavy cruiser NNS Long March

Rear Admiral Herbert Flint tapped his finger gently on the surface. He was watching the tactical diplay where lots of little blue and red dots shifted around. The little red dots disappeared one by one, and the little blue dots were pushing into their general direction.

Also present was Guardinian Commodore Peter van de Waal.

"What do you think Commodore?" Flint addressed his counterpart.

"Nice," answered van de Waal, "I think our forces will soon be able to retake the destroyer from the terrorist hijackers."

From the office of General Kernahan

“What the……..Get Maj Camporeale on the horn.” “Yes Sir.”

    Short time delay

“What’s this I hear of civilian casualties Major?” “Sir I can assure you the pass was clear before it was destroyed. I watched them flee with my own eyes. It must be a propaganda ploy by Western Apolyton to draw sympathisers to their cause.” “Very well Major I will prepare a statement for the undoubted questions were going to receive over this.”

“Get me Major General Williams on the phone.” “Yes Sir”

“How’s thing going in Catherin Greg.” “Rather well Sir, the 2nd Brigade has pushed further into the city without much resistance. They are now approximately half way from the outskirts to the main road running north/south. There have been casualties on both sides but less than we expected. The 1st and 2nd SAS Regiments have now secured the main road south of Catherin and destroyed the pass south to Gardinia. The 3rd and 4th Brigades have established a perimeter extending from our boarder 5 km east of Catherin in a arc north west to a position 5km north of the city and due south to the city outskirts.”

“That would make it about a 40km front.” inquired General Kernahan. “Yes Sir approximately.”

“Alright. I want all the infantry from the 2 Division flown in to the outskirts of east Catherine. That’s 4 Brigades. The 5th, 6th and 7th Brigades of the 2nd Div are to push into the city and rendezvous with the 2nd Brigade. The 2nd Brigade is to with draw and reinforce the perimeter with 3rd and 4th Brigades. The 8th Brigade is to remain as a depth Brigade for the perimeter. This 1st Brigade is to remain in the mountains on our north border.” “Yes Sir.”

"Now remember Greg, our objective is to secure the area east of the main north/south road in the centre of Catherin. That is the disputed border. We're not on a land grabbing mission. Just reclaim what is rightfully ours." "Yes Sir"

Guardinian border checkpoint, just south of the mountain pass

The guards at the checkpoint dove for cover as a string of explosions ripped through the pass and the landslide began.
    "Cover! Cover! Incoming!"
    "Sh*t!"
    "F@?!ing maniacs!"
    "What the hell?!?"
"It ain't landing on us, God d@mn it!", the captain in charge of the checkpoint roared. "Now get your asses back to your posts!"
    "Ah... sir...?"

Moments later, the troops had recovered from the initial confusion and were back on their posts, assessing the situation...

"Oh, bloody hell!", the captain swore as he saw what had happened in the pass up ahead.
    "Get me 9th Marine HQ."

A few minutes later, the forward elements of the 9th Marine Division arrived at the border checkpoint...

9th Marine Divisional HQ, heading north along the highway

"Oh crap!", general Claysson muttered under his breath. This was not good.
Ah well. Couldn't be helped now. And orders were orders. The marines woud carry them out.

    "Sir?", an aide enquired.
"Sir, forward units are coming up on the border checkpoint. They are requesting instructions."
"Tell them...", Claysson looked at the man and almost smiled.
"Tell them that nothing's changed. Our orders are still to secure that mountain pass."
    "Yes sir."

The guards at the checkpoint watched as the marines passed through their position, crossed the border and began a mad dash towards the pile of rubble now blocking the highway.

"We're gonna need some engineers up here", the captain though.
    "And probably some air support..."

    Meanwhile in the President’s office.

“So Admiral Bradley where abouts is the battle group ‘Parkin’ now?” “Well Sir it finished the exercise in the Ceroo Sea the day before yesterday and is in route home.” “Good, good, the battle group ‘Collins’ was due to leave when the ‘Parkin’ got back was it not.” “Yes Sir that is correct.” “Just hold off on their deployment until further notice. Have then set sail just off the coast and await further orders. Have then run drills for a few days to sharpen their skills. Call it a mil skill competition. It always seems to make them try harder.” “Aye aye Sir” “And Greg when the ‘Parkin’ get is have them remain on 60/30 duty. Resupply the group and give the boy shore leave but don’t let them play up too much.” “Aye Sir”

“Now over to you Air Marshal Doull. What have you to report.” “Nothing out of the ordinary Sir, we’ve stepped up our flight missions along the western border and south over the sea but there is nothing out of the ordinary. We’ve even increased patrols on our northeastern and eastern borders. But as I said nothing out of the ordinary.”

“O.k Bruce, remain alert and inform me of any changes. Oh by the way are the AWACS airborne yet?” “Yes Sir we have them up 24hr a day with fighter support.” “Good.”

In the plains somewhere north of Catherin....

Sir, how are we going to get these thing sout without being seen, its not like they are tiny!

We are just going to hope Boondi and Western Apolyton are too busy to check.

    Ok sir

Large Hercules Transport planes stood on the makeshift runway and trucks were racing across the tarmac to the silos laying almost hidden from prying eyes. For a few days now Auldonina experts had been rushing to remove that last of the Missiles still left in WA after the Audlonina pullout. It was too risky with war in the area to leave them here, either WA migh tuse them of the Boondi forces only 150 miles south might overrun the area.

Unbeknown to the Auldonina experts, just behind the ridge lay a gang of bloodthirsty men intent on only one thing, selling the nukes to the highest bidder.

    Audlonina HQ

Official statement by the Guardinian Department of Foreign Affairs

This morning at approximately 7:38 am, Boondi forces demolished the Hefner Pass, destroying the A-18 highway through the pass and making it impassable, thus blocking passage of both humanitarian relief workers and civilian refugees. Guardinia strongly condemns this action and demands to know why this was done. At the moment, it seems hard for us to interpret this as anything other than a deliberate - although indirect - attack on civilian refugees.

At the moment, Guardinian units military units are entering Western Apolyton territory in order to secure the mountain pass and find a way to re-open it for civilian passage. Any attack on these units - or the civilians they are being sent in to protect - will be considered an attack on Guardinia.

Press release from the ‘Rogue Nation of Boondi’

The Rogue Nation of Boondi would like to reiterate, we are not on an all-conquering mission. We are simply reclaiming what is rightfully ours. The main north/south highway running through Catherin is the western edge of the disputed border. We will not cross that highway once the eastern side is secure. Once the original border is once again under Boondi’s control we will cease hostilities and take on a defensive roll.
We wish to inform Western Apolyton that the north/south highway is still open to the north; we will not hinder any civilians wishing to evacuate the city via this route.

To comply with the Geneva conventions rules of was (if we actually have one) we are required to inform Guardinia that the southern pass destroyed by our troops has been mined and set with HE explosives. Any attempt to clear would result in subsequent explosions, bringing down further rockslides and increasing the depth of the blockage.
