+1 to that, an article would be great. Plus more promotion for the current version, though admittedly, it's not likely there would be many more new players, no matter the advertisement.

Thats true.Not too many new players will take up the game at this ponit.. But I think many are in the background like me playtesting from time to time. CtP2 still has that one more turn feel to it and its because of those sticking it out this long to fix the code .Should be noted.

Anyone feel like holding a birthday chat Saturday? Could be a good opportunity to discuss the future of this project and ways to advertise it to a wider audience, although I tend to agree with Solver that you'll have a very hard time convincing anyone who hasn't looked into this before to still give this game a try at this point.

I'm recording a PolyCast episode from 13:00 EST/19:00 CET and after that will probably spend the next few hours editing the recording (although if necessary I could postpone much of that until Sunday, but even then I still wouldn't be available before 17:30 EST/23:30 CET), but a chat earlier on the day I should be able to attend if there's any interest in having one. Considering the short notice it might also be an idea to do the chat one or two days later, but I have a very busy week next week so my options at least are a bit limited (but of course, no necessity for me to be present, I'm hardly a key figure in this community anymore -- if I ever was).

I'll try to be there but the past few times I've attempted to enter a chat haven't worked. I just tried to enter the Java chat room and got:

I'm tending towards starting the chat at 20:00 UTC. That's 21:00 BST (London time), 22:00 CET, 16:00 EST, 13:00 PST and Sunday 7:00 AM Sydney time. That might be a bit early for the Aussies and overlap with dinner time for some Americans but the chat will presumably last several hours (I'll be around that long probably), so everyone gets a chance to join in... I'm not even sure if I can make 22:00 myself, I might be a little late, but starting much later might be a problem for some Europeans (and it's the only time of the day that works for 3 different continents).

Anyone have a major problem with that time?

Don't worry, your messages *are* being posted, other users can still read them. So if you can live with the annoying warnings it works just fine...

However, it would be a lot easier, less annoying and more convenient if you downloaded mIRC. Instructions (copy-pasted from a DG forum):

1) Go to http://www.mirc.com and download mIRC if you don't have it, and install it
2) click on the options button (second from left)
3) click on "Add" button
4) enter the following in the fields
Description: Apolyton
IRC Server: apolyton.net
Port: 6667

and then click on "Add"
5) Fill in the fields: Real Name, E-mail, Nickname, Alternate (in case the first nick is taken) and press "Connect!"
6) mIRC will connect you to the server and the Channels Folder will appear. Type #Apolyton, press "Add" to store it, and then press "Join".
You're in!

Anyway, the proposed time of 22 CET works fine for me, that's 23 here, so I'll certainly be at least somewhere in the vicinity of the Net.

I know the difference just fine, the problem is most people don't. When you say 20:00 GMT 80% of people will assume you mean BST and when you say BST there are always at least one or two people who don't know what time zone that refers to

'London time' is a silly way to put it but at least everyone knows what's meant by it... And UTC *is* a perfectly viable alternative word for GMT (but in my experience leads to less confusion)...

I'm pretty sure we've been over this several times before, you should know this by now

You know, Apolyton is one of the reasons why I remember my time offset relative to most commonly-used timezones

. Then again, I've been saying for several years that the Internet needs a standard time, instead of everyone using their own.

About the CtP2 code... I find it almost ironic how Civ4 impacted the whole thing. Pre-Civ4, source-modified and modded CtP2 was probably the best Civ game out there. And I really believed that an "official" Apolyton Edition could gain popularity among non-CtPers here. Now, though, we have Civ4, which I personally consider to be a better game, and, of course, Civ4's modding abilities, which are great - it's entirely fair to say that they exceed the abilities of CtP2, before the source got released. And the size of communities is absolutely different - the CtP2 community maybe has two around dozen members, counting the no-longer active ones like Locutus or yours truly. Ehh, good times, good times

Solver is starting the ctp2-Civ4 War again! Civ4 is a decent game but I was pulled back to stay with Ctp2 because of the emotional attachment to my code and the Civ4 resource requirements were just too much for my computer. So I thinks it safe to say that Civ4 is great for the upper class but us poor serfs can still get our extra turn with ctp2

I'm out of town this weekend so i wont be here for the chat

I have no intention of starting any wars, E, I've spent too many years and posts here advocating CtP and CtP2 to the other parts of the site. I just want to say that I think Civ4 is a better overall game, and that (unlike Civ3, in many ways) it gained the approval of most hardcore fans. Actually, I still plan to play with the latest Apolyton Edition someday.

I think the odds that John and Tamerlin are gonna reply before the end of the day are pretty slim, so I'll just let the chat go ahead at the earlier mentioned time of 20:00 UTC. I'll keep a chat log and we can always see if people like John, E, etc want to set up a second, smaller chat at a more convenient time for them later on to really dig into discussing some hard-core issues about the state of the current project. If that goes through I'll try to attend that one myself as well and I'm sure some others might be interested in that also -- those people will just have to keep an eye on this forum for a while... which can't be a bad thing anyway

So 20:00 UTC is it. I'll post a news item soon.

If John's not near a computer today that means the reflection article he said he'd prepare is probably not gonna be posted until sometime next week either, so if anyone else also wants to write a reflection on the past 3 years or even more generally on their time with CtP2, feel free to do so. You have until at least Tuesday (but if you want more time let me know and I'll see what we can work out): if you get them to me before then I'll put everything I get together and publish it as a nice birthday feature, a la the Staff Views for Apolyton birthdays. If I get inspired and have the time I might even write something myself...
