  • civil disorder with Shakespeare?

I never thought it would happen, but it did.

I was building my OCC on the difficulty level 4 higher than deity (known on my game as "Don't Even Try It"), and I had just WLCD in republic to size 20. I had shakes, so I sold off my collisseum and my city went into disorder!!!!

After a bit of checking I found that my 19th and 20th citizens were black faces, and Shakes only made them unhappy, not content. I actually had to put some into lux to keep the peace until I rebuilt the Coli.

Once I switched to Demo, there were no more black faces, and I sold my temple and coli.

I Am going to Try to catalog the occurence of black faces under other governments. So far I see that under despotism, the second citizen is black faced, but you only have to deal with deity level unhappiness until you build a unit, or hut one supported by your city. This is, of course, with only one city. build another, and all bets are off.

    ...........

BTW, I would like some better names for the levels above deity. The two levels of barb activity above Raging Hordes are Barbarian Wrath and Sands Of The Sea (although I don't use SOTS much because it generates all those error messages), and I'm satisfied with those, but my levels above deity are like this:

    Deity
    God Hates You
    Lost Cause
    Really, Really Bad
    Don't Even Try It

I like "God Hates You", and I really think "Lost Cause" ought to be somewhere on there, but I need something better for the others.

on deity +4, it seems it's not a certain citizen, but a number of them, that are black faced. after you build a military unit, you have 3 black citizens, and the rest are red. if you have a size 3, all are black. if a size 6, 3 black, 3 red. This is before modifiers, of course.

A curious thing, is that if your units you build are wiped out, you go back to deity level happiness. This happened to me and I was suddenly celebrating WLED since I had built Ming Gardens while waiting for Code Of Laws.

experimented with building another city, and without the black faces, my original city had all red faces, instead of one blue face and the rest red. the second city had a black face right off. haven't tried it since building me a few units.

This makes sense to me, as it seems to follow a pattern in the base happiness (unmodified by riot factor)

Deity - one blue, the rest red
God Hates You(D+1) - All Red
Lost Cause (D+2) - One Black, The Rest Red
    (D+3) - 2 black, the rest red
    (D+4) - 3 black, the rest red

I was wrong about the type of government affecting the number of black faces. the number of black faces is always the same, but you can get rid of them by turning them into specialists. for example, my earlier thing about WLCDing up to 20 was incorrect, I actually did it to 21, and I only had 2 black faces because the 21st citizen was an einstein. I lost them all when I went demo because I had supermarkets and lots of einsteins.

Incidentally, I haven't found the place to modify the files so it gives the proper difficulty level when loading saved games. every time I load a (D+4) game, it says "difficulty level: Receptive". Does the same thing with the high score list

In RULES.TXT, underneath @DIFFICULTY, the fourth line after "Deity" is "Receptive". Try adding your four labels below "Deity". You may need underscores to separate words.

Shakes sometimes has trouble with supported war units away from home in Democracy too.

Did I not read somewhere that the game introduces "super black faces" that need improving first to black then red etc .... ??
Of course there is no visual way of identifying these guys....

Just an aside - the difficulty levels are also in Game.txt - but are not followed by attitude levels ....

the difficulty levels are in game.txt, and rules.txt. I obviously changed the game.txt, or I wouldn't be able to access the higher levels. I can't find the difficulty levels in any of the other text files....

I have never heard of "super black" citizens. even at the highest, so I have my doubts....

Isn't this a known problem, related to this:

Mercatore, that thread is an excellent useful thread, but I don't think it addresses super blackfaces.

SG, I'm surprised that a skilled ICSer like you hasn't already encountered super blackfaces on a regular basis.

When you reach a certain number of cities, you get blackfaces who are immune to martial law. Doesn't matter if you have three units in the city in monarchy, that first citizen remains a blackface. Temple-type improvements or Hanging Gardens will take care of them, though.

I haven't tested whether a super blackface actually requires more steps toward contentment than regular blackfaces, as you describe. My vague recollection is that a temple (normally providing two steps toward contentment) will satisfy one of them (two steps, black to red and red to blue) and have no effect on a second, which is what happens with an ordinary blackface. But without checking, I'm not sure.

HG fixes the problem - as long as no units present ...
Size 2 city that is ...

ok, I just read the thread Mercatore linked, just a minute....

That's what I get for discussing game mechanics, you guys have all done some serious thinking already

I'm assuming that all the adjustments for HG would also hold for the cure for AH.

One question I'm not sure of. The thread said that you might get multiple effects for improvements, such as changing a black to a red with temple, then to blue with mysticism. Do you get that again with oracle? Alternatively, can you change a 3 blacks red with a collisseum, then to content with a cathedral?

To think I started this with talking about keeping the peace under super deity levels, where you get black faces without expanding.

astonishingly enough, I just ran into one of these guys while playing my last game. I was playing on deity +4 with Barbarian Wrath, building two cities using some of your suggestions on this forum.

OK, with one city, before you support a unit, or after you disband or lose any units you support, the capitol has deity level unhappiness. when you build the second city, your first city without supported units has first citizen unhappy, or normal God Hates You unhappiness level. your second city gets 4 black faces. I was able to keep the peace in a size 1 city with a temple and mysticism. your first city gets the same after supporting a unit.

but a wandering unit uncovered an advanced tribe and my second city (size 1) went into disorder. without the third city, a single black face was made blue with temple. after the third city was added, the black face only became red, and was in disorder.

I figure it must have been a "super unhappy" you mentioned.

BTW I you able to save/load also a MGE game? I don't edit games.txt and rules.txt (it didn't work here), I only edit the difficulty level in the .sav file. The problem is I can save only 2.42 and FW games. MGE games may be played but not saved.

I guess I must be behind the times. I don't have MGE yet. I suppose I Should get it sometime, but all my Civ2 games are in FW
