Well, yes and no. Independence Day has a more workable situation-worldwide invasion-but WotW has a cooler atmosphere, IMO. Heat rays and poison gas are just more fun than nondescript green energy, and against a backdrop of Victorian romanticized exoticism it's far more compelling than our weenie, pat, soundbyte based culture trying to defend itself against a miscellaneous race of intergalactic industrial fatcats.
