  • A study in failure: Benghazi

Five days after the attacks, September 16:

Chris Wallace, FOX News Sunday: This week, there have been anti-American protests in two dozen countries across the Islamic world. The White House says it has nothing to do with the president’s policies. Let’s watch.

Jay Carney: This is not a case of protests directed at the United States writ large or at U.S. policy. This is in response to a video that is offensive.
Wallace: You don’t really believe that?
Susan Rice, US Ambassador to the UN: Chris, absolutely I believe that. Because, in fact, it is the case. We had the evolution of the Arab Spring over the last many months but what sparked the recent violence was the airing on the Internet of a very hateful very offensive video that has offended many people around the world. Now, our strong view is that there is no excuse for violence. It is reprehensible and never justified. But in fact there have been those in various parts of the world who have reacted with violence. Their governments have increasingly and effectively responded and protected our facilities and condemned the violence and this outrageous response to what is an offensive video. But there is no question what we have seen in the past with things like Satanic Verses and cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad there have been such things that have sparked outrage and anger and this has been the proximate cause.

    That was then.

And this is 2 hours into the attacks:

Officials at the White House and State Department were advised two hours after attackers assaulted the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11 that an Islamic militant group had claimed credit for the attack, official emails show.

The emails, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with U.S. spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mention that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks…
Administration spokesmen, including White House spokesman Jay Carney, citing an unclassified assessment prepared by the CIA, maintained for days that the attacks likely were a spontaneous protest against an anti-Muslim film.
While officials did mention the possible involvement of “extremists,” they did not lay blame on any specific militant groups or possible links to al Qaeda or its affiliates until intelligence officials publicly alleged that on Sept. 28…
The records obtained by Reuters consist of three emails dispatched by the State Department’s Operations Center to multiple government offices, including addresses at the White House, Pentagon, intelligence community and FBI, on the afternoon of Sept. 11…
A third email, also marked SBU and sent at 6:07pm Washington time, carried the subject line: “Update 2: Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibility for Benghazi Attack.”
"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

That does seem to be the official Obama campaign response to questions about this topic.

This event had hot and cold stupidity running long after it happened.

Yah, the whole "what did you call it" thing was pretty stupid.

(Sending them in on 9/11 with warnings of a possible attack was probably not very smart.)

Keeping the consulate open at all given the Admin's refusal to improve security in spite of the deteriorating situation on the ground there definitely was not smart.

And it works because only partisan hacks who already hate Obama care whether he thought a video had something to do with the attacks or not.

Obama went on for days denying that Benghazi was a terrorist attack because it didn't fit his narrative.

Where do you imagine hindsight comes into play here? We were the last western flag flying in Benghazi due to everyone else leaving because of the security situation. The ambassador had been pleading for more security at the consulate (even on the day he died). Given the adamant refusal to do so from the Admin, what rationale do you see for them to keep the place open?

                        Then why lie at all?

No captain hindsight would be a baiting of Moby on why involvement in Libya in the first place was misguided. Course many on these boards were actually prescient with foresight on the matter. Calling Arrian.

Why should I think anyone lied? Has there never been an intelligence failure in the executive branch before?

The rationale that they considered the ambassador's work important? Yeah, it's easy to say in hindsight that he needed more security.
