MING: Faces of Apolyton #8, 26/Mar/2002

PART II

Hello again,
This is eighth instalment of the Faces of Apolyton interview series, and here comes the long awaited interview with an old Civ gamer, Apolyton forums moderator, Ming. The interview has been kindly done by Chris 62, and all the credit goes to him. Thanks Chris!

Ming loves to talk, so we've split him into two parts. The next time you'll be able to read second part of this interview, where Ming tells about his music tastes, his wife and CivIII. Also, the awaited section “Apolyton asks, Ming answers will follow”.

Enjoy,
ACS Interview Chief - Solver.

Chris62: Let's start with a little background, your a family man, let's hear about that.
Ming: I've been married for over 18 years to a women I met at a science fiction convention, I have two daughters, 13 and 7. My wife has always liked SF, and knew that at conventions, men outnumber women about 8 to 1...

Chris62: Might be a higher percentage ;) That is really something, most women don't care for sci-fi. How does she feel about your gaming?
Ming: She was a gamer when we first met. We played many games, but she doesn't like Civ. She likes games like Myst and Doom, while I like the TBS games and strategy games.

Chris62: Yes, you're an old war gamer, going back to the old Avalon Hill games, aren't you?
Ming: Yeah... rah and I used to play all the old AH games, Blitzkrieg, Tactics Two, Gettysburg… I still have a full shelf of them. With a twin, I always had somebody to play with.

Chirs62: Ah, the classics from the early 60s. Your collection would be worth quite a bit at auction, I'll bet!
Ming: Most of them show a lot of wear, probably not worth much anymore. We played them to death.

Chris62: Ever attend wargame conventions, like "Origins"?
Ming: No. Tournaments yes, conventions, no. I only do SF conventions or SCA events.

Chris62: SCA events?
Ming: Society for Creative Anachronism, Medieval reenactment.

Chris62: Tell us about that.
Ming: We dress up in strange costumes, do fighting in armour, enjoy old style feasts, but mostly, I joined to hit up on a woman I knew! She was also a gamer, talk about luck... Interestingly enough, my wife was also in SCA, so I guess I'm a real sucker for women who dress in strange costumes and play games.
