DARKCLOUD: Faces of Apolyton #11, 09/Aug/2002
DarkCloud: Have you ever been able to meet anyone from
Apolyton?
DarkCloud: No, although I
live less than 30KM from a prominent Apolyton poster. (Let the speculation
begin, if ye so wish- but I ain't tellin'- yet, because, in the immortal words
of Hydey or Alexander's Horse: "I'm not telling you where I live because I don't
want you to come down here and rape me" ;))
Although, on second thought, I did meet one Apolytoner. I invited a person I
knew who was involved in Earth:2025 to Apolyton's Earth:2025 clan. He
registered with some strange Elven-Everquest name... I can't remember it
exactly. He posted about two or three times in the Earth:2025 section before
OmniGod and Ribannah got into their little spat which ended with the Apolyton
Earth:2025 clan breaking apart.
I have tried to recruit several people I know in real life to Apolyton, but they
don't understand forums or my fascination with them. Oh well. I remember one
person volunteered to spam apolyton and see what he could do to get himself
banned after I finished a lecture on the forum, I nearly gave him the address
too, however, it's probably for the better that he didn't join as he was
planning to access Apolyton from my place of work and insult the site owners.
[This would most likely have resulted in him being accused of being my DL and me
receiving a ban, permaban, or [the worst punishment imaginable- a PCR], so it's
probably for the best ;)]
DarkCloud: What is
your occupation in real life? (if you are a student, then what would be the
profession that you would prefer to practice?)
DarkCloud: Well, right
now I'm a student, and have been a student for many a year.
However, I also write. I write a lot. My dream is to, one day, become a
published author. As it is, I have submitted several Sci-Fi and Fantasy shorts
to "The Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy" and all have been rejected,
although one, "Yellow" received a favorable rejection (If one can say such a
thing exists), thus, I think I'll submit "Yellow" to "Asimov's Science Fiction
and Fantasy" next. (Asimov's is the second largest sci-fi magazine, the first
being Analog, the 3rd being the Mag of F&SF, and the 4th being Interzone)
"Yellow" is a tale about a janitor who is not quite what he seems and a
spaceship full of aliens in orbit around Jupiter. The story brings to mind Fred
Hoyle's "The Black Cloud" for some of its action. It is generally blasè in
tone, but carries the reader through fairly quickly.
"cat." is another tale which received a mild rejection. I submitted "cat." to
"Black Gate" Magazine. "Black Gate" is a fantasy quartelrly. The rejection
letter detailed how I could possibly improve the story. Now, generally I would
have followed the suggestions and resubmitted the story, however, although the
suggestions were good, the problem was that if I was to implement them, I would
have to rewrite the story and change the tone. (Now, I may do that anyway if I
get desperate enough, but I have faith in some of my other stories, namely my
Novel,
SOCKS [98.5% completed as of today, All that needs to be done is a little fact
checking and proofreading on one or two suspicious pages] SOCKS is a spy-spoof
told from the perspective of the bad guys ;)), my Fantasy Novel [Which is
currently under construction of its first draft] and is already about 135 pages
long, with a planned 200-300 pages yet to be done, and two sequels in the
works... I suppose the closest fantasy to my fantasy is Robert Jordan's Wheel of
Time Saga. If I had to cite a direct inspiration, that would be it, although the
story itself is my own idea. Book I deals with a party of seven trekking across
the Great Basin, heading to Holy Oblisk to warn the monks of a Crusade against
them.
Also in the tale are; a Light God, A Dark God, demons, fairies, political
intrigue, assassinations, rebellions, revolts, suspicion, etc.
As for short stories, I have a few in the works other than "Yellow", namely "Satan.com"
in which the Devil gets a Web Domain [very humorous], and "Termites" a Sci-Fi
story of an alien civilization of intelligent Termites.
Since I cannot easily make a living as an author when I leave college, I suppose
I'll become either an Economist, Statistician, Accountant, Editor, Librarian,
Philosopher, Historian, Physicist, or something else. Although, 'Editor,
Librarian and Philosopher' are unlikely as they don't pay very well.
[If you wish to see any free tales, you could search in the Alpha Centauri
Fiction section for an unfinished 30-40 page humorous Semi-Spy tale entitled
University Saga at...

DarkCloud: Would would be
the crowing achievement in list compilation that you aspire to?
DarkCloud: I suppose my
crowning achievement in list compilation would be ot have a fully complete tome
of The Apolyton 100 with all correct information and every story about all the
top 100 Apolytoners.
