DANQ: Faces of Apolyton #10 (Part 2), 30/Jul/2002 [Page 7]

Solver: Do you think there will be a Civ4? Would you like one?

DanQ: For a change of pace, I'm going to keep this answer simple and straight forward: yes, and yes.

Solver: What other things are you doing on the Web, besides running and reading Apolyton?

DanQ: It's a good thing that you are limiting this question to other things online (of which the Web is apart of) because we could be here for another interview page or so just on that alone. I would like to think that I do a fair bit in the offline as well as the online world, but I'll just stick to the latter as per request.

I have designed and maintained a number of websites for non-profit organizations in my community and surrounding county in which I hail from. Currently, I am the webmaster, design and maintenance, of the Rotary Club of Brockville and the Big Sisters Association of Leeds & Grenville. I am also dabbing in genealogical research of my family tree and have established a domain that will hopefully later this year become a full-fledged website devoted to my family line. I have been involved with each for a little more than four years and every intention to continue. Other non-profit groups I have been involved with in designing and/or maintaining their websites at one point or another are: the Brockville Public Library, the Gananoque Public Library, the 1000 Islands Community Development Association, South Leeds Community Access Program, Leeds Community Access Program, the Brockville Soccer Club Inc. and 1Up Basketball Camps.

Naturally most if not all of these names are not going to mean much of anything to most people reading this, but if for nothing else I mention it so as to inform the Apolyton readership what else I am involved in (and again, this only refers to online-oriented commitments). During my high school years I started and ran websites for several clubs (school newspaper, Interact (junior Rotary group), peer helper group) as well as for its 40th Reunion held in 2000. I was also co-lead on the development of my high school's first website to boot back in the fall of 1996. I did once design the first incarnation of a website for a company, but it was a seasonal and locally owned and operated business (I no longer have any association with the company or its website).
Other websites I visit regularly that I do not have a hand in operating {grin} include various Star Trek (e.g. TrekToday, TrekWeb, Section31, MediaTrek) and Stargate SG-1 (e.g. GateWorld) fansites as well as various humour sites (Dilbert, Garfield, PVP, User Friendly, Little Gamers, Angst Technology, Penny Arcade). I also browse the odd computer-related site (PCWorld, C|NET, Online Tonight, WebTalkGuys, AnchorDesk).

Ohhh yes, the shareware page I mentioned in passing at the beginning of this interview? In case you were wondering, I shut it down in August of '97 (and yes, I still remember the address it was once housed at :)).

Solver: Please tell us that URL, at least for those that are using the Internet Time Machine :).

DanQ: :)

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/1491

After first reading this question, I conducted a search for the URL on archive.org and only found a listing for 2000 and 2001, at least two years after I shut it down. A subsequent more exhaustive search still failed to produce any results. Moreover, the links to both of them generated a ‘404 Not Found’ error equivalent in archive.org’s own document collection.

So, as near as I can tell, its content has been all but decimated to Internet dust.

BONUS NOTE!

DanQ: Less than a month after receiving GameStats' hosting/affiliation acceptance letter for "UCIVII" in December of 1997, it came to my attention that the person who had taken over "CivII Heaven" from Mike was retiring from the community and was looking for someone to take it over -- anyone with an interest and ability to do so, really. Had the GS acceptance letter not come, or had this said request/knowledge thereof surfaced a month before, I would have offered to take "CivII Heaven" over and merge the "UCIVII" site under the name of the former. If this offer had then been accepted by the other party, who knows what might have happened after that. Perhaps if and when we are able to shift between and locate specific quantum realities someone can find out and report back. :D
