DANQ: Faces of Apolyton #10 (Part 2), 30/Jul/2002 [Page 3]

Ron Jeremy: In your dealings with Apolyton's posters you are relentlessly polite and professional. Do you ever get the urge to spend a good half-hour screaming abuse at them?

DanQ: What makes you think that I don't occasionally already? :))

Solver: What's your view on the fact that, as many claim, Apolyton is now a "Forum with a website"?

DanQ: In being consistent with my answer for question #17, I believe that this perception is not without its merit and is indeed true to an extent. In all honesty, though, whether you view Apolyton as being a "forum with a website" or the other way around makes no difference to me. Naturally I want all sections of the site equally represented and well received, but the visitor base has and will continue to have the final say on its own as to which sections receive the most traffic. That’s the way it should be, anyway. Historically, the forums have topped this list and I personally do not foresee this shifting for any extended period of time for the foreseeable future.

DarkCloud: What is your favorite memory of Apolyton?

DanQ: At the risk of sounding like a Sunday night family drama, I don't think it is possible for me to pick out just one favourite memory of Apolyton. I'm not certain whether you want to be limit my answer in terms of what has happened on the website itself or not. So as to ensure that there is more to my response then these few sentences, I'm going to assume that latter and talk about the five that are atop of my list of treasured moments. Again, this is one of those cases where the following is by no means intended to be exhaustive... there are bandwidth charges to keep in mind, after all. ;)

1) The first time Apolyton was mentioned in a print publication. I believe that this occurred in the December, 1998 issue of "PC Games Magazine". Unfortunately, the author of the article in question did not get some of his facts straight -- including an important one {grin} -- but we are still grateful for the positive exposure in the more mainstream media (this goes for all such mentions to date).
2) The day the Apolyton store was rolled out. If it wasn't for CafePress or a similar outfit like it, it simply would not have been possible to adequately setup, manage and grow. An extension of this is when my Apolyton T-Shirt, hat and mug arrived in the mailbox shortly thereafter. I was pleased with the quality of the merchandise and from what I have heard so have others who have ordered Apolyton wares. It's amazing to have something tangible to reflect one's many years of work and see it reflected in this way. If you haven't already, you don't know what you're missing out... don't forget that liking Apolyton and proudly sporting your support is considered cool today, kids and kids at heart. ;D
3) Moving to our own dedicated server. GameStats for the most part treated us well for many years, and our temporary host at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece was commendable in their coming to our rescue earlier this year so that we could stay online during trying times. However, nothing beats the thrill and, yes, even the risk associated of "going on one's own". It has definitely been a positive step that took many years of hard work to make feasible.
4) The first time Apolyton was given an exclusive on content for a game within our scope of coverage, although I cannot honestly recall exactly what that was. All future exclusives fall under this category as well. I am thrilled when the site receives this kind of attention and cannot begin to thank those enough that have and continue to make them possible.
5) My being the co-recipient of The Spanish Civilization Site's 'Silver Fleece Medal' in April, 1999. It was truly a great honour.
