DANQ: Faces of Apolyton #10 (Part 2), 30/Jul/2002

Hello,

This is the second part of the DanQ:'s interview. Dan speaks out on the current situation of Apolyton, as well as mentions some Civ related things.

Enjoy,

ACS Interview Chief - Solver

Solver: Why are you mostly seen posting in the Apolyton Community forum, and rarely the others?

DanQ: As you mentioned in your preamble in your public request for questions to ask in this interview, you had mentioned that little was known about me -- especially when compared to the profile of Markos people have compiled over the years -- beyond my professional, formal style of conduct in, for instance, forum posts, emails and instant messages. I believe that this analysis of myself is accurate and I no longer take offense to it (I acknowledge that there was a time that I did).
To categorize Markos and myself as the 'administrative duo' of the site, I am the more "behind the scenes guy" than not. At the same time, my field of interest is communication, and this is indeed reflected in what I am currently studying at university (Mass Communication/Law double major, as I mentioned earlier) and in the full-time/part-time/summer jobs that I have held and am holding. I also mentioned earlier that one of my key areas of responsibility on the site is PR. The Apolyton/Community forum is naturally the central hub of this kind of discussion, and combine this consideration with my spearheading the news department and addressing other messages directed at the Apolyton executive day in and day out, I honestly do not have time to post in other forums on a regular basis. Rest assured that I do browse the other forums at least on a bi-daily basis except in exceptional circumstances, e.g. exam periods.

Solver: Which persons on the board currently are memorable?

DanQ: Me, myself… oh wait, I suppose you want me to talk about other people now... fine, fine. :)

The first group of posters that come to mind are those gaming company employees who created the respective titles Apolyton covers. Some of these are current and others are not, so I hope you will permit me the leverege to include them. The following is not intended to be an exhaustive list, but they include John Possidente, John Heinecke, Brian Reynolds, Dan Magaha, Jeff Morris, Soren Johnson, Jeff Briggs, Tim Train, Stormhound and Alan Emrich.

Other posters, whom I will now limit to current ones, are Ming, GP, Locutus, Imran, DarkCloud, Solver, MichaeltheGreat, MLeonard, Monk, Provost Harrison, Rah and Velociryx. To those whom I left out in either group, do not feel bad -- you are all simply far too many to enumerate here. As you can imagine, I correspond with quite a few people in the course of a day (both on and offline).

Solver: Apolyton is a gaming site, so what about those non-gamers visiting this place?

DanQ: This was a matter I recently addressed in the 'Apolyton/Community' forum but I welcome the opportunity to do so again here. Apolyton is built, maintained and frequented by gamers for gamers. Non-gamers are welcome to visit the site as often as they wish, and the Off-Topic forum is a perfect avenue for non-gaming discussions with gamers and non-gamers alike. Sometimes predominately non-gamers will discuss gaming matters, and certainly the reverse is true.

Will we go out of our way to make non-gamers welcome by offering additional services than the Off-Topic forum that cater primarily to non-gaming interests (and the chat room could be used for this purpose as well, not that that is what it is intended for)? The answer is no. However, will we go out of our way to make non-gamers unwelcome? Absolutely not.
