THE COLUMN THREE POLLS FOR CIV THREE By Markos Giannopoulos March 18, 2001 NOTE: This is The Column, a regular feature on Apolyton where anyone can write about anything to do with Civilization or the gaming industry as a whole. If you feel like writing, please visit the article submission page.
end IF Print $Column.Content(158) THE SHOW WILL GO ON I hate talking about myself, especially on a column, but it's really amazing... The last two weeks I was accused of exploiting civers' enthusiasm, called developers' bitch and saw posted silly jokes about close persons of mine and prostitution(to mention the "best" examples). Still, what's 2 weeks compared to 5.5 years of participation in the civ community? The thought of discussing all of the above passed through my mind but I remembered that I'd be more interesting to read about civ than about my issues ;) THRONE ROOM OR PALACE? So, this week I'm discussing our three civ3 polls and the so far results. In, the "Throne Room or Palace?" poll, the two most voted options are "Palace"(38%) and "Something New"(32%). It's interesting that Civ2's "Throne Room" gets only 8%. Reading voters' comments, what seems to be missing from the Civ2 implementation is the ability to personalize(even limited in 3-4 choices) your creation. Given that a large part of the "Palace" votes are due to nostalgia, it would seem more logical to go for something a bit different(how about a combination of the "palace", the "forbidden city" and smac's "achievements" all in one screen) but the basic idea(choices!) of the "palace". END GAME REPLAY LIKE STARS' CHRONICLE? On this poll, I'm glad to see the "Yeeeees!" option getting the bigger part of the votes. The idea simply goes a lot beyond the map replay: personal notes, diplomatic negotiations, battles, city details, etc., and all(at least the text) exportable to the web in a click. Another large part of the voters like it, but don’t think it's critical. Basically what everyone wants is an improved civ1 replay. Firaxis has already said that a replay will be included, without more information. Whatever kind of data it contains, I would like to emphasize on the need to be exportable. Can you imagine being able to "watch" on the web the replay of a multiplayer game, including comments from the participants? :) ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT BUGS IN CIV3? And we come to the hot issue of (mostly) last week. First of all, it's reassuring that only 1% loves discussing bugs ;) Beyond that, the majority of civers (52%) have either total or a lot of trust in Firaxis. 24% Are more realistic(some will be corrected, others not) and 14% is just hoping for the best. And, for the most interesting part of the poll, only(?) 6% think that we are going to be in big trouble, in a similar situation as the one with SMAC. Meanwhile, a few voters commented "what smac disaster?". In the end, was smac a "bug disaster" or not? Perhaps we need another poll just with this question. Either way, some great people in the civ3 forum are already preparing for bug lists, which brings hopes for faster "updates". THE END If I note for the second week that we would really like Firaxis to open the discussion on issues that are still open, is it going to be likely that we will get a comment? :)
