COLUMN ARCHIVE

Hello, everyone, let me start of by saying, thanks for reading this article. :)

You know, I've been coming to Apolyton for about a year and a half. That's a long time, longer than any other web page by far. Possibly longer than all of them put together. And why? It's not just Civilization. I'm an ancient Civ and Civ2 fan disillusioned by CTP and SMAC, and hoping for the best in Civ3, but right now, just kinda waiting. I don't post in any of the other sections much, if at all. You might find me in the Civ3 suggestion section, or possibly in the CTP2 section, but not much in either place. So what keeps me coming to Apolyton? What keeps ME here for hours a day sometimes?

The answer is Apolyton Off Topic. I found this place shortly after I first started coming to Apolyton. And what I found, quite simply, is amazing. Sure, it's also rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things, but amazing nontheless. We are, as Apolytoners (and especially as Off-Topicers) probably the single smartest group of people I've ever enjoyed knowing ever. The range our our expertiese is staggering. We've got the Roland Stenish group, with Roland, Sten Sture, Derek, and many others. We've got the resident real estate lawyer, n.c. Our resident physicist, IntgrSpin. We've got our resident expert on... well, so far everything and counting MichaeltheGreat. And we've even got Lancer, our expert on women. Apolyton is one of the first places I turn to with advice. It's the first place I turn to with a funny story, or a question. You can find debates on everything from music styles, to politics, to religion, to philosophy, and all the various shades and d technicalities.

We include devout atheists like Provost Harrison, devout christians like Lincoln, muslims like Imran Siddiqui, and to libertarians like Wraith, Berzerker and myself (and others); to democrats like n.c., republicans like Imran, and Boshkoists like Boshko. We've even got a guy that made up some political from of government called "Demesos". Even though most people don't really understand it, or agree with it, hey it's something -- umm -- original. We've got young and old alike. We have, well OK, we don't have very many women but we do have a few!! You'll get to experience memorable moments, like the (original) Apolyton elections, Black Saturday, the Green Army, and many other memorable events. Perhaps you'll even become an Apolyton Legend. :)

So what's my point? Basically, the Off-Topic is a great place to meet great people. To any of you that lurk, or don't come to the Off Topic at all, drop by and say hi. It can get crazy at times but you'll enjoy yourself, I'm sure.
