CTP2 Gold Party, November 10, 2000

[DWhite] We wanted to hold off on it for a little longer to make sure that it was really solid.
[Locutus] :( that's a real pity, one of the few things that was missing from SLIC.
[meriadoc] Never tried them..,. scenarios that is
[Locutus] Cool, Dave
[Biff] I couldn't even get them started
[[ATVI]Azmel] The AI fortify when they don't have anything else useful to do. The strategy engine is smarter, so you shouldn't see it happen as often, but sometimes they really are just waiting for something to do.
[NemoX] dwhite: wwII scenerio, nice
[Atahualpa] can the AI differ between raids and an invasion?
[[ATVI]Azmel] Ata, we don't have code specifically for detecting that. It's hard for players to tell that too though.
[LightEning] Ata: Can humans?
[NemoX] azmel: "waiting for something to do" like picking a fight? :p
[Atahualpa] sure
[[ATVI]Azmel] Nemox, heh, indeed.
[Atahualpa] I know when its a real conflict and when its just a war on the paper
[NemoX] :)
[meriadoc] Would u rather the AI disband its units when their bored?
[NemoX] no, just hide inside and suprise me
[NemoX] with their might :)
[[ATVI]Azmel] Usually when the AI is waiting, it's building up units to mount an attack.
[meriadoc] :)
[Locutus] :)
[Biff] Is there a dfference in CTP2 and CTP piracy rules?
[DanTheMan] The whole "calm before the storm" approach to warfare.
[[ATVI]Azmel] Biff, yes!
[Atahualpa] did the random map generator undergo any changes?
[NemoX] how is the trade oute reset? can it be done manually - say via waypoints?
[NemoX] oute=route
[aCa] How many units do they usally attack with on the most difficult level?
[[ATVI]Azmel] Biff, now as your unit stays on the route, it pirates every turn and gets gold.
[MarkG] Dave, could you tell us something about the A-Team and their involvement?
[mrogre] Yeah, piracy is actually much different now. When you pirate, the unit keeps on pirating until the trade route goes away, and the person pirating receives the income (minus a certain percentage) instead of the seller.
[Locutus] yes, MarkG, I want to know too
[meriadoc] What happens if I don't want to pirate the route - but I do want to sit there?
[DWhite] Ata: There were some minor tweaks to the map generator.
[LightEning] Hey, give the AI the ability to feel pleasure, and it will play 2X more better!
[[ATVI]Azmel] Nemox, trade routes are still automatically generated, but you can stop and start them (with some cost to your caravans)
[LightEning] ;)
[Atahualpa] thx
[mrogre] You don't pirate unless you give an order to pirate, you can still sit on a trade route without doing anything.
[meriadoc] Thanks
[Atahualpa] does the trade route stop then?
[Atahualpa] when you just "sit" on it
[mrogre] no
[Neblig] No, the trade route continues
[Biff] Will the AI pirate as much as in the origianal CTP?
[NemoX] azmel: so how can you "move" a trade route (say from over water, to land)?
[meriadoc] Probably :)
[[ATVI]Azmel] The AI will pirate if it doesn't like you.. so it's good to make friends with the AI. :-)
[DanTheMan] Biff - some ai personalities tend to pirate more. Some rarely pirate at all.
[Atahualpa] is pirating as easy as in ctp1 or are there fewer units that have this flag?
[[ATVI]Azmel] "The computer is your friend, trust no one, keep your laser pistol handy."
[Locutus] :)
[meriadoc] Great.......
[DWhite] Sure Markus, I don't know how many of you know about this, but there was a small group of dedicated Apolyton guys who helped us with the beta. We contacted several people who were most involved with creating MODs for CTP1 and asked them to take a look at CTP2 and give us their feedback.
[mrogre] As in CTP1, all military units can pirate.
[meriadoc] Cool
[sophix] do you get gold from pirating?
[meriadoc] Cool for DWhite comments. Rats for All military units pirating
[[ATVI]Azmel] Nemox, as I said, trade routes are automatically generated. But when you explore more and reform a trade route, they sometimes change their path.
[Atahualpa] about governments: do they have any influence on diplomacy. e.g.: Do communist AIs dislike me more when I am democratic?????
[DanTheMan] ata - no.
[Atahualpa] thx mrogre
[Atahualpa] thx
[Locutus] Can you give us names mrogre?
[Locutus] ;)
[DWhite] Their comments were critical to the last minute tweaking we did on the game. We also contracted one of the Apolyton guys, Harlan, to create a scenario for us. Alexander the Great is his baby. =)
[NemoX] azmel, k thats fair (still wish there were waypoints though :( )
[[ATVI]Azmel] Ata, no, they don't dislike you because of your government. You could do that for a scenario though.
[NemoX] what happens if you go over the N/S pole? is the map options like CTP I, or hcanged/added options?
[MarkG] That's Harlan Thompson btw.... :)
[DanTheMan] actually, that would make a GREAT scenario.
[Atahualpa] does the personalty have influence on the interaction? so slavers tend to form alliances among themselves rather then with liberals for exmaple?
[meriadoc] I kinda liked "donut world" myself
[mrogre] The normal game options for the map are the same as CTP1, but it is possible to create mods/scenarios with real flat maps.
[Biff] Will CTP2 come with scenaraios
[mrogre] yes, 3 scenarios plus an earth map.
[meriadoc] Now all we need is "coffee world" :)
[Biff] cool
[MarkG] MrOgre, any ideas to get the world map to work with over 8 civs?
[meriadoc] Yes... Earth lives
[Locutus] hmm, all my work in the flat-map area nullified :( j/k ;)
[[ATVI]Azmel] Ata, friendly AI try to make friends with everyone, but tend to be more successful with other friendly AI. Warlike AI tend to only respect stronger powers.
[Biff] how many civs can play at once?
[Atahualpa] hmmmm thx
[thue] Any plans for further civ games?
[Atahualpa] in the official scenarios are there only 8 civs?
[MarkG] Ata: yes
[Atahualpa] :(
[Neblig] In the scenarios, there are 8 Civs for Alexander, not including barbarians, 3 Civs for Magnificent Samurai and 4 Civs for Nuclear Detente.
[DanTheMan] thue - we have no plans to make any more .civ. games, since we don't have the .civ. license. There are currently no plans to make a CTP3, but that can certainly change.
[Biff] how do revolts work?
[Atahualpa] Will there be a documentation for SLIC?
[meriadoc] Good question
[Locutus] good q
[Atahualpa] mrogre?
[mrogre] Yes, there will be documentation. Winnie's written some, and I'll be around to answer questions as well.
[DWhite] Ata: we're working on some extensive documentation for SLIC
[meriadoc] Cool
[MarkG] MrOgre, any ideas to get the world map to work with over 8 civs?
[Atahualpa] great!
[Locutus] cooool
[meriadoc] Thanks
[StSwithin] yes
[NemoX] ways to win: scientific (Guia Controller), diplomatic (allie with everyone), economic (? most money by 2300ad?) - what else is there? what happened to placing things on teh world to win?
[DanTheMan] biff - if a city's happiness drops below a certain point, they will riot. All Production stops. If it continues to drop (or if it dramatically drops from a content or happy state) they city revolts and forms a new empire.
[mrogre] There are also 3 scenarios shipping that have a lot of scripting to look at.
[Locutus] will the SLIC doc be readable for newbies to programming?
[[ATVI]Azmel] Nemox, there's no economic victory. The only one you left out was conquest: kill everyone else but you.
[DWhite] NemoX: The Economic victory had to be cut.
[DanTheMan] You lose control of the city. They, and all the units, wonders, improvements in it become part of the new empire.
[Biff] can you incite revolts as in CTP?
[Atahualpa] in ctp1 happiness wasnt much of a problem though. In the med mod it was!
[Neblig] Yes, you can incite revolts.
[NemoX] ok, what happened to placing things around the planet, was that cut too? or something separate?
[Atahualpa] have you (activisionians) played the med mod?
[Locutus] and if so, what version?
[DWhite] NemoX: Placing things around the world is part of the Gaia Controller victyr
[[ATVI]Azmel] Nemox, in the Gaia controller victory you place oblisks on the map.
[mrogre] MarkG: I'm not sure if you can get past the screen that asks you how many civs when launching a scenario :-( I'll get back to you though, there might be a way to get around it. (I'm not sure).
[DanTheMan] nemox - the gaia controller victory requires you to place things around the planet.
[MarkG] it's activisioners according to the Apolyton Lexicon Of Civ Terms
[aCa] The new empire who gets created when a site reveolts.... is that barabarians?
[NemoX] ok thanks
[Biff] Can cities be transfered to other empires peacefully?
[Locutus] Actigrammers you mean Markos
[MarkG] Actigrammers are Activisioners Programmer :)
[meriadoc] Can units be transferred to other empires peacefully?
[DanTheMan] the gaia controller victory is actually really fun. You need to get a certain percentage of the map covered in order to initialize the GC and there are a lot of ways you can go about that. It makes for an interesting challenge.
[[ATVI]Azmel] aCa: sometimes barbarians, but if you've killed off empires in the game, then the revolted city could become a new nation.
[Locutus] point for you ;)
[DWhite] Biff, cities can be given to other nations.
[MarkG] sorry Activision Programmers :)
[DWhite] Units can't
[meriadoc] These obelisks to be placed - can another civ destroy them?
[NemoX] what about a wall map? or is everything .entirely. .pdf format?
[StSwithin] oh yes
[Atahualpa] are pws placed around underwater cities visible on the surface?
[DWhite] yep, you'll need to protect them
[DanTheMan] meriadoc - yeah!
[[ATVI]Azmel] meriadoc, Yes, they can be pillaged.
[DanTheMan] that's why it's a challenge.
[[ATVI]Azmel] It's good to protect your oblisks.
[Atahualpa] hi wes!!!
[Locutus] hi wes, about time ;)
[MarkG] mrogre: i did the following= change the text for 32 civs, open the game, selected the world map, click launch and then it crashed :0
[StSwithin] hi wes!
[mrogre] Hi Wes
[sophix] can you demand a city?
[MarkG] Wes!
[DanTheMan] hint: obelisks can be placed underwater, too.
[mrogre] MarkG: Doh.
[meriadoc] uess so
[MarkG] sophix: yes
[Locutus] you're popular wes
[DanTheMan] sophix - yep!
[StSwithin] yes, you can demand a city
[sophix] cool
[NemoX] gaia controller victory sounds cool 9was worried about it not being space, but thats good =)
[DWhite] sophix, you can demand a city. But don't expect to get it unless you are very strong. =)
[Biff] Can you demand a city from an AI even?
[MarkG] Btw, guys, the game has yet to crash.... ;)
[StSwithin] plant an army of 12 next to the city and try it :)
[DWhite] Biff, yep
[Biff] Awsome
[meriadoc] Definitely
[WesW] .Hi everyone. Been a long time since I chatted.
[Atahualpa] I will never surrender a city
[meriadoc] Good to see you
[Biff] Neither will I
[DanTheMan] ata - you may have to. ;)
[StSwithin] we've missed ya, wes!
[meriadoc] Then you will die :)
[[ATVI]Azmel] Is WesW THE WesW of CTP1 fame?
[LightEning] WesW... don't worry... We'll always remember what you said...
[Locutus] yes!
[Atahualpa] Azmel: yes
[[ATVI]Azmel] Cool!
[StSwithin] you'll surrender the city when I put my army of 12 next to it...
[NemoX] i never surrender, just get revenge :D
[Atahualpa] nah rather I fight to death, if I surrend it what advantage would I have?
[NemoX] what about a wall map? or is everything .entirely. .pdf format?
[aCa] Why surrender. Isn't it better to try to beat the enemy .... atleast kill some of their units?
[MarkG] btw, Wes, you're in the credits along with the rest of the A-Team :)
[Atahualpa] I guess the units in the city are turned over to you then
[LightEning] (irrelevant to discussion) this is the first mass message in a long time...cuz i think it's important.
[LightEning] forward it around...please!
[LightEning] israelis hacked into http://www.hizballa.org/
[LightEning] ...they've posted pictures of their soldiers and a message.
[LightEning] I suggest you read it if you want to see what the news doesn't cover.
[LightEning] but don't look at the pictures...they're authentic and they show some real cruelty.
[DanTheMan] Surrendering cities can be an effective strategy. If you find yourself on the business end of a large, hostile army, you may find giving up a small city or two may save your ass. Better to give up 2 cities than watch an enemy take 15 or 20, right?
[Locutus] Cool Markos!
[LightEning] A message sent to me over ICQ...
[Biff] I never surrender, but sometimes I die
[MarkG] Light, please...
[aCa] Good point DanThe Man
[MarkG] Nemo, the manual is in rtf. i didnt see any pdf
[WesW] rtf? pdf?
[Atahualpa] Dan: There is no advantage for me in surrendering! Without I can at least kill one unit, when I surrender the enemy gets my units as well!!!! That makes him just stronger
[NemoX] err rtf, sorry, btu what about a wall map - on paper?
[Locutus] So, how much soda's went into making CtPII? ;)
[MarkG] Ah! why was the break agreements diplomatic option disabled???
[aCa] MarkG: Can't you post the manual before the game realese?
[aCa] (:
[mrogre] Many sodas, more coffee.
[Biff] Do non-trespassing agreements work the same way?
[meriadoc] Good idea
[StSwithin] about 2000 liters of mountain dew
[Locutus] :)
[meriadoc] :)
[MarkG] aCa: if they let me :)
[StSwithin] and 10,000 litres of coffee
[NemoX] aCa - that'd be nice, even after release too :)
[Locutus] :D
