CTP2 Gold Party, November 10, 2000
[DWhite] "Default" is very similar to the Growth priority
[[ATVI]Azmel] There were a few things that got fixed, anything specific?
[MarkG] can you use mayors along with queues?
[[ATVI]Azmel] Yes, the mayor will only add build items to empty queues.
[DWhite] Yep, The Mayor will only change the queue once it's empty
[MarkG] azmel: a couple of previews mentioned that the mayors where building the wrong things...
[[ATVI]Azmel] If you keep your build queues full, the mayor will bow to your judgement.
[DanTheMan] we fired those mayors and replaced them with good ones. :)
[DWhite] That particular comment was in reference to Units being built on the Happiness priority
[[ATVI]Azmel] Sometimes it's not obvious why a mayor picked a particular item. Like when you have no more growth buildings, so it builds an army.
[[ATVI]Azmel] for a growth mayor that is.
[MarkG] done?
[MarkG] a couple more questions and we go to unmoderated....
[DanTheMan] ...
[DWhite] Also all Mayors have an eventual priority for city defense. If the most critical things for that priority are already built and there no one defending the coty then the Mayor will build a few units.
[[ATVI]Azmel] Likewise, if you have too many armies (based on their support cost) then the mayor might choose to build growth buildings under an offense mayor.
[[ATVI]Azmel] ..
[[ATVI]Azmel] .
[MarkG] is there going to be a demo???
[DWhite] Unfortunately no. There's no current plan for a demo.
[DWhite] ...
[MarkG] argh!
[MarkG] especially due to art... similarites many people dont see ctp2 as a true sequel
[MarkG] your response?
[DWhite] Well, that's a real tough one.
[DWhite] Early on in the project we scoured the fan site, like Apolyton, and the newgroups for ideas on what was really important to the players in a sequal.
[[ATVI]Azmel] When you play the game, it feels very different, even if some of the unit sprites are unchanged. The game play and play strategies are also very different.
[DWhite] We figured the most important stuff was in the UI and core game systems. Most people felt the graphics were very good.
[MarkG] [LightEning] How much parts of the game you have "borrowed" from your fans?
[DWhite] So yes, on the surface the game still look very similar. But it plays very differently. We did redo like 80% of the art though.
[DWhite] We took fan feedback very seriously.
[StSwithin] we robbed the Apolyton forums blind
[MarkG] did you check out the civ3 forums? ;) :-D
[DanTheMan] we abducted forum members and "probed" their minds. ;)
[StSwithin] of course!
[DWhite] Yeah, we were reading all the Apolyton forums.
[MarkG] examples?
[mrogre] Mutually Assured Destruction is a good example of something first suggested on the forums that made it into the game.
[DWhite] I have a 300 page doc from Apolyton with tons of comments and suggestions.
[[ATVI]Azmel] The priority we gave to diplomacy came from comments we read on Apolyton.
[MarkG] [NemoXX] is there a globsat wonder, has it been fixed?
[StSwithin] and interface
[StSwithin] yes indeed
[mrogre] National borders are another good one, everyone and their brother asked for that.
[mrogre] ...
[DWhite] The Globesat Wonder still exists.
[DanTheMan] Yes, there is a GlobeSat.
[StSwithin] and it's fixed
[mrogre] There is a globesat wonder, and it works well.
[MarkG] btw, why dont i get a warning when i enter foreign land?
[mrogre] ...
[DanTheMan] It's BETTER.
[Neblig] Because you can see the national boundaries
[Neblig] ...
[MarkG] i think i need a "you're an idiot" warning though... :)
[MarkG] and last question: [thue] linux version???
[mrogre] I haven't had much contact with Loki recently, it's up to them on a Linux version. I'm sure Activision's still willing to let them do it.
[DWhite] There's no current plan for a linux version.
[[ATVI]Azmel] I don't know about that, but I can say that the programmers would love to see one.
[mrogre] ...
[MarkG] ok, cool
[MarkG] going to unmoderated in a couple seconds
[DanTheMan] Mark - if you violate borders and the AI doesn't like it, they'll let you know. As long as you comply with their request to leave, they don't get too upset with you.
[MarkG] my many thanks to all the actisioners who were here, and best whishes for ctp2!
*** MarkG sets mode: -m
[Atahualpa] *breeeeaaathhhh*
[MarkG] free
[NemoX] so, how many civs does the UI hold - thats what i still want to know since it was given a blanket answer before
[LightEning] Ja sitten onkin aika puhua suomea jotta kukaan ei ymmärtäisi mitään siitä mitä minä sanon...
[[ATVI]Azmel] Sometimes the AI doesn't see you violate their borders, so they don't complain right away.
[MarkG] be civil
[DWhite] Thanks Mark
[stratesford] free
[NemoX] thank everyone
[stratesford] free at last!!!!!!
[Locutus] finally... I'm Locutus again :)
[LightEning] There has never been a single chat where I haven't got the first message after the moderation was set off... :)
[stratesford] too bad i have to go :(
[LightEning] At least of those where I've been in
[mrogre] NemoX, I believe there's on informational screen (for science) that will not display more than 8 civs, but otherwise I can't think of anything that wouldn't work with more.
[stratesford] bye dudes
[mrogre] That one should not stop you from playing in any large way.
[Atahualpa] isnt it much micro to move diplos around to establish embassies?
[NemoX] mrogre: shouldnt it be 9 civs - that was a problem with ctp I look here: http://home.mmcable.com/apogee/Graphics/ctp.gif
[Locutus] Mr Ogre/Neblig, does SLIC have a block quote?
[NemoX] 8 legal vis but the barbariens bupmped them off since they made it 9
[LightEning] So, how many of you people (not the Activisioners) still think that a big map equals a good game?
[[ATVI]Azmel] moving diplomats is made someone easier because they are not considered military targets and will usually be expelled by hostile powers, not killed.
[mrogre] No, 8, it doesn't show barbarians on that screen at all.
[NemoX] ok - good , that was pointless anyway - since they never researched :)
[mrogre] Sorry, no block quote (that's a text formatting question, right?)
[Atahualpa] but thats awful! I move the diplo around for turns and finally am about to establish an embassy and then boom it gets expelled. Now I have to move again :(
[DanTheMan] consider building and moving diplomat units as a measure of your commitment to diplomacy. If you really want to try the peaceful, diplomatic angle, you will send your diplomats. If you look at the real world, world powers still send diplomats in person all the time, just as ancient civs sent heralds.
[[ATVI]Azmel] You shouldn't send your diplomats onto unfriendly nations territory..
[Locutus] yes. :(oh, well, guess I'll have to write a script for it then
[NemoX] after the globsat can you see the whole map, even if there is still a FoW (fog of war)?
[Neblig] Yes
[NemoX] :)
[mrogre] Yes, the globesat sets the explored bit everywhere as soon as you get it.
[Atahualpa] still I would find it much better if I could establish embassies via negotiations
[NemoX] nice
[Atahualpa] real world diplos dont take 20 turns to reach china!
[[ATVI]Azmel] Ata, having to reestablish an embassy is one of the pentalties for going to war. If you stay out of war, you only have to establish an embassy once with each civ.
[Locutus] Sorry Markos...
[Locutus] :)
[NemoX] not sure how possible this is, but next time someone (apolyton/activision) updates www site, can we see something with MAD?
[DanTheMan] Atahualpa - fair enough. However, unless you are openly at war with another empire, your diplomat will be able to move around their territory with impunity.
[[ATVI]Azmel] And besides, only Nixon could go to china. :-)
[aCa] lol
[Biff] When will the game be in stores?
[NemoX] lol
[MarkG] Nemo, perhaps over the weekend...
[NemoX] OK! :D
[NemoX] thanks
[Locutus] Can you change food/production values through SLIC in any way? (per city/tile/civ)
[aCa] Was it two weeks later in europe?
[DanTheMan] and, in ancient times, it did take a LONG time for heralds to travel. By the time you have empathic diplomats, you should have maglevs and undersea tunnels. Should be a quick jaunt. ;)
[Neblig] There should be a screenshot of the MAD attack on an upcoming IGN Designer Diary, NomoX
[mrogre] Very soon in the US, 2 weeks after very soon elsewhere :)
[Neblig] NemoX, I mean
[Atahualpa] I just dont like moving diplos and without embassies no tech trade
[NemoX] hehe, got it neblig ;)
[DWhite] Actually, look for the game next weekend. It'll definately be there by then. A little sooner if your lucky.
[Locutus] cool... I can't wait
[aCa] me2
[Atahualpa] How will support for the game look like after the release?
[meriadoc] Neither can I.......
[Locutus] Will the WWII scenario be released after the game ships?
[Neblig] Locutus, Food/production cannot be changed directly in SLIC, but those values can be modified in different text files in the gamedata directories
[[ATVI]Azmel] Ata, the team has been on a break, but we'll be back in the office in force by the time the game ships.
[MarkG] A comparison of CTP2 and CTP1 on release? ;)
[meriadoc] Is there any chance of getting a copy of the manual on-line ahead of time?
[DWhite] Yeah, we're working on the WWII scenario right now.
[NemoX] Do the AI still fortify _everywhere_ around their territory? if so, why?
[Biff] did anyone else have trouble with the scenarios in the original CTP?
[NemoX] instead of inside their cities that is
