Civ3 PtW Chat, September 20, 2002

Waiting for the expansion of Civilization 3 we had a chat with several Firaxians. The took place in both our irc channel and the web chat

<WarpStorm>  Mike, when you say wishlist you mean that these may be post-PTW release, right?
<Locutus>  Thought so Oh well, CtP2 is so far ahead in ingeneous SLIC scripting, Civ3 never gonna catch up anyway

<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  WarpStorm> It's *technically* possible that items still on the wishlist will be implemented in PTW but more likely that they would surface in a patch or future expansion

<Cesa>  Rhye, the next xp will probably be called Play the solar system, and the next Play the galaxy and so on
<Locutus>  Don't worry IW, CIv3: Test of Time can't be more than 6 years off, that will include scripting, for sure

<Speed Bump>  Mark: No, I am on the phone withthe Infogrames producer now.

<Theseus>  Are civ-specific abilities on or off in MP? Is it a choice? If on, what civs are people picking?

<Rhye>  i put in the wishlist one proposal: increase unit hp to 3,4,5,6 or even to 4,5,6,7 to reduce random effect

<Rhye>  will we be able to play scenarios or modpacks in multiplayer (of course if every player has the files)

<panag>  shall the locked field 'sin the editor be unlocked ?
<player1> Hmm, since unit stats are probably locked, is Carthaginian UU 2/3/1 Spearmen? A little bit too much powerfull (compared to Greek Hoplite).
<Theseus>  Sorry, ignore that.
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  Rhye> Yes, and if the mod/scenario only change data (bix files), the other players do not even have to have the files
<Theseus>  What new game types do you guys like the most?
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  panag> I don't know about all of them but Operational Range now has a cap of whatever the map max ends up being (currently 256)
<MarkG>  i'm not asking about the release date but how far aay are we from going gold?
<Speed Bump>  player1: I think it's 2-2-1 now, but we have been messing with that one recently.
<panag>  shall we be able to unlock the units stats ?
<WarpStorm>  Are any of the new MP modes good for Builder players or will they only cater to the warmongers?

<player1>  Now the ultimate unit question: The ADM/cost of Medivial Infantry. Is it 4/2/1/40, 4/3/1/50 or something else?

<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  panag> hit points are locked mainly due to the lenght of time combat takes when you increase them

<Speed Bump>  player1: it's 4-2-1 but I can't remember the cost...sorry :blush:
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  redbull> the AI is pretty much the same as it was in Civ3 with a few minor improvements. People seem to say the barbarians have gotten smarter though....
<Propaganda>  Is there any way to carry over 50% of Alpha Centauri code, and make it replace Civ III code?
<WarpStorm>  Shields look cool, but will they cost the same etc., If so they don't seem very unique, if you know what i mean.

<panag>  what about "hidden nationality" , when you have it flagged , you still see from who it is , shall this be fixed ?

<Propaganda>  Also, is there any way to have partisan units come out from cities in Civil Disorder to fight you?

<Propaganda>  I liked that concept in Europa Universalis.
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  WarpStorm> Playing for victory points caters more towards builders.
<Speed Bump>  Warp: This from a guy who thinks the end game is too defensive in PTW?
<SpencerH>  Is it chance or have the expansionist civs improved a lot with 1.29 it would improve their choice in PtW
<player1>  Is Galic Swordsmen a "Mounted Warrior" with extra defense? (a SUPER UU)
<Speed Bump>  Warp: It's not by the way
<Ribannah>  Expansionists are good on the right maps
<Propaganda>  Also, any way to have cities that are "culture-flipping" to become an autonomous state, instead of joining another civ?
<Speed Bump>  SpencerH: Actually most of the testers find that expansionistss rock in MP.
<WarpStorm>  I didn't say I was a Builder, jsut hypothetically

<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  Spencer> Expansionist civs are the civ of choice for most people here in MP
<Ribannah>  Of ourse. Speed is everything in MP unless you make special rules.

<Speed Bump>  Ribannah is right...given the right map
<SpencerH>  Yeah I think the goodie hut benefits will be a huge benefit in fast bloody games

<Theseus>  How do the AI civs perform in mixed MP?
<Sonic>  Will you be able to change UUs? For example, from F-15 to B-29 in WW2 scenario?
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  Sonic> yes
<Propaganda>  Sonic, you can do that now.
<player1>  by the way, did some original units got tweaked stats (Longbowmen comet to my mind)
<Ribannah>  Can we have a second UU?
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  You can add a second UU now. Just make the unit available only to one civ with the editor.
<Propaganda>  Just rename the unit.
<player1>  :eagerL And finnaly ADM/Cost stats for Bezerk please
<Propaganda>  Making the graphics is another story though.

<player1>  So, the difference between Medivial Infantry and Longbowmen is?
<SpencerH>  So whats the best theory for how to stop an early warmonger in MP
<Theseus>  How will the Koreans generate GLs?
<WarpStorm>  That unit could rock throughout the entire Middle Ages
<Ribannah>  Has anyone popped the big question yet?
<Speed Bump>  player1: Longbowmen don't need iron
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  Me. Infantry require iron and have 2 defense

<SpencerH>  I dont think they want to get married

<WarpStorm>  the backup unit for iron-less civs, I guess
<Propaganda>  Mike, is it possible in future editions(if any) to add more diplomacy options?
<Sonic>  What will be the worse side of guerilla if comparing to infrantry? If there will be none, nobody will buy infrantry because guerilla requires no resources...
<WarpStorm>  Will there be a full manual?
<Speed Bump>  Theseus: ??? just like everyone else...do you mean a Golden Age?
<Propaganda>  I'd like to be able set up Unions with different civs, somewhat like the vassal state system in Europa Universalis.

<Theseus>  Sorry, yeah, how do they get a GA?
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  WarpStorm> There will be a manual but it's mostly just what's new since Civ3 (though it is pretty big for a manual)
<Propaganda>  Mike, a simple request. Can you make it so we can rename our civilization in mid-game?

<Propaganda>  We can do it with leaders and units.
<Speed Bump>  Theseus: Just like the Americans and the English unless you turn lethal bombardment on.

<Propaganda>  Also Mike, this is a question on behalf of all the modders out there....Can we now dictate diplomacy in the editor?
<WarpStorm>  So why has nobody seen a picture of Hannibal? Is it a conspiracy or something?

<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  Propaganda> That's still on the wishlist because the AI would ignore whatever you set so we have to modify the AI...
<Propaganda>  I know it's difficult for me to complete a good Cold War scenario when I have the Americans attacking the Europeans out of the gate.
<player1>  About Bezerk does his stats look much more apropriate for some Industrial assault infantry? I mean 6/2/1/60 Amphibius

<Propaganda>  Mike, thanks for the answers. I have another question, however. I'd like to know what Favorite/Shunned government means for the games I play.
<player1>  prop, good question
<Ribannah>  Mike, while you're at it (modifying the AI), make it so that they don't all get angry at you if your trade with a civ stops when they get wiped out
<Propaganda>  Do the civs with Communism as a shunned government become generally belligerent to the person using it? Will they be aggressive towards you? Maybe attack you?
<Propaganda>  Maybe set a "secret" embargo on you? I still don't understand it.
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  Propaganda> yes the AI has a lower opinion of you if you are using their shunned govt type

<Propaganda> Also, Mike, the assimilation percentage for each government is usually 4%. What does this mean? Do the people you take over assimilate faster, and thus,

<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  assimilation chance is used on each turn to determine if citizens in a captured city switch to the nationality of the conqueror
<Propaganda>  Hey Mike, any chance of seeing an addition of "Improvement becomes obsolete if this is checked" to the editor?

<Speed Bump>  Ribannah: That's possible in the editor I believe>
<Propaganda>  What I mean is can we have more of these flags?
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  Ribannah> Using the editor you can make it generate negative culture
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  (using the 1.29 editor)
