Civ3 PtW Chat, September 20, 2002

Waiting for the expansion of Civilization 3 we had a chat with several Firaxians. The took place in both our irc channel and the web chat

<panag> some people play and have 10 windows open , antiscrips on , firewall , a dozen other programs , no updates and then they complain they can read a book in between turns , .....
<panag> when you play , you play , you dont get on the net and at the same time play , ...for that there is MP

<Chieftess> My Civ3 computer is seperate from my Internet computer, so I don't have any lag problems.

<Chieftess> Even when Civ3 DID lag on a huge map, I went and got a memory upgrade.

<DavidDuke> I am saying was because once I get computer it turned to huge map, 16 civs, computer breakdown in 6th turn

<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> If you put the line KeepRes=1 in your ini file the game will run at your desktop resolution (I think there is a max. resolution though I'm not sure what it is)
<\\xor\\> Actually, I havent been able to run on slower resolutions.

<panag> okay , but with screens above 21.5 there it gets weird

<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> No 1024x768 is the minimum resolution
<Chieftess> 3 days without Civ3 can be tough. ;-)
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> the game runs minimum in 1024x768
<Chieftess> Especially when your 10 year old Tatung monitor only runs at 680x440..
<panag> yes but on 16/9 format it goes , well , strange
<Javier_Sobrado_Firaxis> if you want to give your computer a headache run it in 1600x1200 zoomed out

<panag> its fixed with the screen tools , but on most screens , you need to set it again for each game

<Chieftess> Same here - good thing the new one has better DPI resolution, too.

<Mike_Breitkreutz_FIRAXIS> More zoom levels comes from the same problem as having a word to store tile indices.

<panag> with hidden nationality , the AI still knows who you are , is that fixed ?
<Chieftess> I tried nidden nationally and invisibilty in a mod I was testing, and the AI still saw me.

<\\xor\\> BTW, Will we be able to see what are Civs trading with each other or just that they have trade "active" like in Civ3?
<panag> well the AI just contacts you , ......so therefore he knows who you are
<panag> and we should be able to close an embassy permanently !

<Patrick Dawson> You can change users to AI, or you can change AI to user, so a game you start in Single Player can be finished in MP, or a game you start in MP can be finished in SP

<MarkG>  one more from the forums: When you develop the game you have an option to start an AI-only game (to test AI etc.). Is there any chance you will put this in the game?

<Rick Elkins> What I'm asking is whether the inherent advantages (special units and advantages such as science, etc.) can be "turned off" in Play By email games, so that no nation has any advantage?

<Rasbelin>  Looks like I'm not going to move over to Civ III from Civ II for making scenarios, at least not yet.
<Mike Breitkreutz FIRAXIS>  player1> yes there will be a mod manager. It's similar to the one used in one of the Civ2 iterations where you have a folder containing all the assets for your scenario. However, there is also <
